Curiously, there is evidence for flash-freezing among megafauna (mammoths, woolly rhinos, etc), where the animals in the ice are standing, in some cases with green leaves and cud in their mouths. Explanations for how this could have happened vary, ranging from catastrophic pole-shift and sudden axial tilt, to bolide impact (meteorite or comet), or some unknown solar-related atmospheric event. For those theories, only the Younger Dryas Impact theory has any supporting evidence worth noticing (in my opinion), though the reverse-polarity stuff is real. But no-one really knows what such reversals do to the planet. Anyway, thanks for the dramatized reading of the gaming session -- you're both very good performers. Seeya next week! Oh, and Withal gets no respect, poor guy.

I know the other commenter has their bit but this is honestly some of my favourite chapters in the entire series 😅

This is the Moment that sold me on Udinaas being my favorite character. There is this horrifically burned corpse that he has worked on, which is gruesomly reanimated before him, and he doesent just instantly go insane, he doesent run away screaming, he can still see the humanity in this and embraces him, lets him cry on his shoulder. Unbelievable.

I've been squirming in anticipation all week because I knew you guys were going to read these two chapters and I just couldn't wait to listen to the episode. It was a pleasure listening to you describe your experience reading them. I remember feeling breathless, stricken with horror.

Okay. Actually some of the best chapters in the series. I’d forgotten that it was 2 Edur chapters in a row but thank god for that eh??
Quick note on mistakes/confusion - from what I’ve seen, literally 80-90% of first time readers have these issues to some degree, at least judging by content creators on YT. So please don’t stress! Was so glad Lana was able to correct the Wither/Withal confusion tho 😂😂
As to the actual content… loved your deep dive on the Sengar brothers’ relationships with each other. Really great stuff
And now you see Trull being truly badass - his long night is so freaking cool. He’s a warrior to the bone, and fearsome with that spear
And then Rhulad… poor poor Rhulad. He’s a jerk but still poor Rhulad. Your reaction to his death and resurrection exactly mirrored mine - truly horrific stuff. And Udinaas just breaks you with his compassion doesn’t he? Shockingly beautiful ❤❤❤
Thanks as always for being awesome!

I've actually run the Sengar brothers quest as a oneshot in Mythras (perfect system for Malazan btw) when one of my players couldn't make it to our usual session.
My players have 0 knowledge of Malazan, but funny enough we did have a single death in the fight for the sword: In our version of events, Trull got his head smashed open like a watermelon. The others decided Trull's body should be taken back, and his corpse could carry the blade, at which point I laughed and laughed.

That never happened in malazan but is somehow the most malazan thing ever

From Trull when he was lost:
“He was lying motionless, the snow slowly covering him, whilst his mind ran on and on, fleeing this lie, this empty world that was not empty, this thick whiteness that exploded into motion and colour again and again.”

Woop always a great evening when this comes out! I love your perspectives on the dynamics between trull and rhulad. I don't know why but I've always had a negative view on rhulad, but it's always been accompanied by the idea that Trull never handles any of it well enough to have made a positive impact on him. Similar to how their father treats him in the previous scenes. Yes rhulad is an immature, impetuous, and I believe he does lie most of the time. But he wansnt born that way. And it must have been difficult to find his own way growing up in the shadow of these pillars of the clan as his brothers. Also I'm glad how much you talked about the focus earlier on udinass and his coin ritual as you get the pay off in this scene. You have the gravitas of how many coins have been seared onto his corpse. And now he is encased in gold. Such a visceral image I want to see on a big screen! Withal is one of my favourite characters! Just an unlucky dude who could make swords.

I've said it plenty of time, Midnight Tides is special. Also, it gets better as you go along. Horror and compassion are the essence of Malazan.

I love when you show a piece of artwork for a character or scene as you talk about it. I'm sure it can be difficult to find those without running into spoilers, but would love if continue putting those up.

Wither is neither the Wyval nor Withal the weaponsmith. Can’t imagine why you’d get that wrong…[shakes fist at cloud, is immediately crushed by the foot of Mount Doom].

You're remembering Withal from the last scene in the prologue where the Crippled God asks him to make a sword

  • @mpwoodru
    @mpwoodru 6 месяцев назад +1

The scene with the Nacht and the nest reminds me of the Rhulad, Mayen, and Fear love triangle. Not exactly parallel but Rhulad keeps strutting (making the nest), Mayen keeps teasing (inspecting and destroying the nest), while Fear watches in confident amusement.

Falling asleep on watch is punished extremely severely by militaries in the past, sometimes even by execution, because it endangers the entire unit or army. I believe the Roman punishment was being executed by your own unit because they are the ones you betrayed.

Yeah I really liked the unreliable narrator perspective realisation that Trull himself is not too familiar with women, thus kind of has a scewed perspective on some of the rhulad mayen interactions

They over complicate so many things. If something seems logical then that is normally the answer, but if you have to make things up to reach your conclusions then it is definitely wrong.

I'm catching up with these videos and they're great but sometimes it feels like they purposely get things wrong and overcomplicate 😭 and for whatever reason, they see going back and re reading bits as cheating or something
