Greeting Jonathan! I thought it would be quicker to make a jig to hold the blanks. I thought I could make the napkin rings, set of 4 or 8, more quickly by drilling the blanks on the drill press and finish them on the lathe. Also, with the jig, I can remount them to sand and finish them, cheers.

I sand the inside of the ring lightly. I do not want it to snag the napkin. Cheers.

I'm new to turning, but any reason to not use a nova chuck to hold the poplar shaft jig instead of gluing into the larger piece?
