  • As the Federal Government asserts its right-of-way for the ambitious Lagos to Calabar coastal highway project, numerous beachfront businesses find themselves on the brink of demolition, with some already having faced the wrecking ball. In this report, ARISE Environment Correspondent Laila Johnson-Salami highlights several of these establishments and examines the impact of the construction of this 700-kilometer road on them.

    My own concern is the fact that it takes the government of Nigeria at least a decade to complete projects like this,we will generate better funds by focusing on inter state and across state roads,that apapa port is always congested,other ports can begin to work ,must every thing come through lagos..Even eko Atlantic till today is still not finished,lagos Ibadan, Lagos Benin, Abuja lokoja, these are some road that transport major cargo, till today are bad roads with insecurity concerns,instead of focus inside, the government is building roads worth trillions of naira. Penny wise,pound foolish

    • @IOdele
      @IOdele 16 дней назад +2

      This is an interstate road connecting 9 states and will be extended. Projects like these take time, infrastructure doesn’t just appear over night. Eko Atlantic is making huge progress. And is being planned meticulously with all the land already bought. Again these are legacy projects, which are to have impacts in years to come. Stop thinking so small

    • @odemaj8605

      its obvious,you do not understand my perspective. I never said the coastal road is a bad idea,you nor dey Nigeria?are you not witnessing the high rate of inflation,are you blind to reality? For example ,just in the past 1 month do you know how many tankers has capsized spilling fuel/diesel due to bad roads,
      I simply mean that this is not the right time for it,the economy is on life support,instead of government cutting down spending and focus on improving already existing issues,they decide to create a liability worth trillions,a project that wouldn't be beneficial to us at the moment .

    This is my problem with the nation. We talk about creating an enabling environment for SMEs to thrive. Then same businesses are then plagued with multiple issues from multiple taxation, to insecurity, extremely hard access to loans, poor infrastructure, no power, extortion on roads, and now this. I only hope the affected businesses in this project are duly compensated.

    The coastline and 200m from it belongs to the FG,it is the same everywhere else in the world........... but the FG said they will only be taking 50m of it,yet people are still complaining
    I think they should go to court, and if they do,they still won't win because the supreme court has already ruled on it

      Since it’s the same anywhere show me where there has been a demolition like this?
      In fact I can tell you that in the U.S. and Canada, the government knows that even though beaches are public and the government owns part of it, they know the value of the beach fronts and will never demolish, and if they wanted to they will get sued by property owners on the coast and if they end up winning, they will pay compensation of just not the value, but will factor in future valuation and opportunity cost, that’s how things work in places that have law and order

      You are very correct and understands how real estate works, if you remove sentiments and look at it the other way round , you will see that the government is being very considerate here,
      With all the post about demolition on social media is the reason government is requesting for building approval which a lot of people do not have.
      Most of them knows about this coastal road from day one and still bought the property, while others did not do due diligence before buying the property.
      Before buying property anywhere In the world DUE DILIGENCE is very important.

The government should be encouraging tourism businesses to thrive, not demolishing a revenue generated leisure businesses.
