As a Trombone player (also as a bass bone player) this is something unbelievable! And a live performance! Nobody can even imagine to do like You did! Fantastic! Number One performance for Trombone absolutely!
What a KICK! Van den Berg is a machine! Great tune! Neat to see the blonde gal in the band smiling, as that is how I felt while listening. fun, FUN! Thank you for posting!! ...from Minnesota, Dec 21, 2014
As a former trumpet player, I have been aware of the existence of Bass Trom, but I never knew it could swing like this! Absolutely awesome! Thanks so much for sharing, it made my night!
Such an insane performance! I always come back to this! Been watching it for like 10+ years! Love that deep, big, CLEAN, and farty tone! Wonderful fun little tune! Good stuff! 😁😎🥹👍🏻🫡 I like that the woman at the end was like "I need a drink after that!" 😆
Absolutely wonderful bass bone playing! This is what it's all about. Mr. van den Berg certainly had some nice support from Patrick Williams and that marvelous arrangement from the Sinatraland album by Pat - not to mention the superb backing of the Metropole big band!
Holy crap man. The bass trombone sound you produced was of such forceful clarity that I almost died. And the amazing blend with the band was radical. Love your ending pedal tone C
As Mr Patrick said it during the concert: the best basstrombone bigband player in the world! Great technique and style! Next thing is learning this trick from the master himself...
Amazing performance outside our dimension 👍 As a basstrombonist, thank you Maestro for sharing this video and thank you Maestro for your absolutely fantastic playing ❗ Respect 🙏
i am playing a Bass Bone from them as well, never held a other brands Bass trombone which was as comfortable as Kühnls ... totally underrated :( i am from switzerland btw
amazing playing - amazing recording to........... Martin is featured at the Dutch Bass Trombone Open 2010, talking about recording playing, studio work, frasing and more! I am happy finaly this video is out! long overdue.
I can't wait to send this to my friend in the community band who has a B.S. degree in Trombone Performance. Knowing him, he's probably already seen it. In any event, a great and powerful performance! Kudo's from the U.S.
excellent playing and a super arrangement - love to know it is available to purchase for our band? loving the "under my skin" mentions - well done sir!
Great sound, great performance, thoroughly enjoyed. Thumbs up from me. Had to giggle at the plug for the Kühnl & Hoyer bass trombone though, with its rubber band assisted valve spring!
The "Sound" is enhanced by the great double bass musician playing every note than Martin is playing. Who is it? I think he was the bassist at the Gregory Porter concert.
I wouldn't say enhanced ! The double bass add some color to the sound in general. No doubt about that. But enhanced ?....the only instrument who can enhanced the basstrombone is the Tuba. Of course it's just my personal opinion as a professional basstrombonist.
It seems silly to me to compare players like Martin and Phil or anybody else you wanna throw in the mix. Martin sound absolutely great here, why not just enjoy it! Enjoy Phill when you hear him play! This is such a nice clip with a great band and beautiful playing by Martin. Thanks for sharing, Ben!! //Mattis
A big tip to anyone thinking of buying a bass trombone or generally upgrading. I seriously advise getting a double independent open-wrap instrument. I had a Holton TR181 (double independent) for decades and wondered why my lower triggered notes were harder to blow and l found out it was because the tubing was closed--wrap and thus causing too much resistance. My new Yamaha Custom is open-wrap and is so easy to get every note to speak at an equivalent volume no matter in which register.....
That is a lot more likely due to the rotors just being faulty or dirty rather than the twist and turns in the closed wrap. I have played various closed wrap horns (42b, 50b corp, conn 62, conn 88h, etc..) which blew better than open wrap horns. The one thing they all had in common was their amazingly well taken care of rotor(s).
@@boneblaster69 I'm afraid that you're completely wrong! My two previously owned Holton TR181 double independent Bass Trombones didn't speak well when using the F rotor and using 3rd position for Eb and lower below the stave! These trombones were closed wrap and had a lot of resistance! Both of which, l purchased brand new, so there were no issues regarding the rotors being faulty or dirty! Bass Trombones aren't horns!!!
So, about to graduate, I play Jupiter XO 1240 RL-T in band, whats a good one to get once i graduate cause I want a similar one that still feels the same
great sound on the bassbone, I know those things are hard to play. Air, intonation, phrasing, tone are all big challenges to a bassbone player, and you exceed them!!!
Fan Trombone I've also been playing the Bass Trombone since November 1st 2008 and I have always loved the sound of the Bass Trombone. I was a decent Tenor Trombonist. As soon as I played my first note as a Bass Trombonist it was beautiful!
@@MrSwinginjoe Bass trombones take a lot of breath, especially on the low notes. See how Martin has to take a quick intake of breath on the last "not quite continuous"note! He certainly nailed it, though, as did the bass player.
@tombone27 like PT recording too. I believe Phil just sight read the thing.....Both are amazing players just don´t compare but enjoy. Martin´s live perfromance is great, good control, also the recording and editing is very very good for a live gig. But this is why the Metropole orchestra is maybe the no.1 recording orchestra in europe.
What a wonderful musician - and as great an exponent of the bass trombone as Bart Varsalona - I can't give higher praise!. Perhaps he should make an album of Monk tunes - then Saturday Night could be Thelonious Night Of the Week! :-)
Anyone ever notice he had a rubber band attached to one of his valves to probably provide faster response for all the great fast technique he exhibited.
I've played bass trombone for a long time and not many can match what Martin did here! Great Job! I can't quit listening to it!
As a Trombone player (also as a bass bone player) this is something unbelievable!
And a live performance! Nobody can even imagine to do like You did! Fantastic!
Number One performance for Trombone absolutely!
Erkki Koskimo and in front of Patrick Williams himself!
Lionel fumeaux knocked this guy out of the park dude
Agree with you! 😊
Damn! Never heard a bass trombone sounding so perfect and CLEAN! Great arrangement. That backbeat run (or whatever its called) is killer!
What a KICK! Van den Berg is a machine! Great tune! Neat to see the blonde gal in the band smiling, as that is how I felt while listening. fun, FUN! Thank you for posting!! ...from Minnesota, Dec 21, 2014

Former trumpet player. This video showed me why if you catch my drift
It's the best low brass video I've ever seen.
An inspiration for sure.
Really wonderful, congratulations.

Martin sounds so wonderful, along with the Metropole big band and of course Pat's gr8t writing!

Pedal B
Great playing, Beautiful sound!!!! This is a great example of the bass trombone as a
unique solo instrument!!!!
This is the best big band bass trombone video I've ever seen.
marvelous! combination with the bass string!! great performance Martin and fellow saturdaynightblowers!
Great fat and smooth sound! Nice pedal B at the end too!
Holy crap!
Isnt that the lowest note for the bass bone?
Ralph okay well it could probably go lower but I think that's the lowest note it can play without the player doing more. I don't know how to explain.
Larry Martinez depends on your lips, I can get down to a double pedal G on a tenor trombone
I can understand, I like brass more than woodwinds but a woodwind would seem fun to learn for me at least
that is the best sound i have ever heard come out of any trombone

bravissimo, la migliore perfomance di un trombone basso mai ascoltata.....suono e tecnica esemplari..........
GRANDE basstrombonista, complimentoni!
Fabulous solo. Great tone and fluent technique. Love it !
As a tuba player who plays trombone. I need to invest in a bass trombone.
Tionne Blackwell do it very well worth it
Unless you are playing fairly high( like over b5) , a small bell bass is better to use imo for almost anything you play.
Agreed
Tionne Blackwell I used to play trombone along with tuba, now I just play tuba
Yeah me too. İ am tuba Player. Playing trombone just for 10 months .next month I will buy bass trombone.
This is a fantastic arrangement and great soloist!
I have a Kuhnl & Hoyer tenor trombone and I love it! Very underrated outside of Germany.

Dear Lord! What an amazing sound!
Absolutely! And think also for of the superior solist sound adjustment! There can be no better sound quality!

pretty damn fine articulation for a bass trombonist hands down to you sir

Your are proud of him , and rightfully so.
Amazing tone quality.
great playing - excellent chart....
Great playing, easy and fluid.
Amazing
The song was in C concert. Listen right at 3:58 when he slides on down to the Bb from a C. You can hear it much clearer there.
Great video!
bellissimo suono,complimenti

I loved this so much, I played it twice
Fantastic sound Ben
très belle sonorité
🎉j'adore ❤❤trop joli magnifique ❤❤🎉😮🎶🎼👍🏻👍👍🏻👍😵😵👍👍🎶
I was there at the concert. It's all live. No edits or overdubs. It's all Martin!
And doublebass, don't forget!!!
@@rolandblokhuizen double bass??
@@pauladwyer2869 Double bass plays exact same score as trombone. Credits for both players.
Bravo Martin !!!!!!!!
should be titled as bass trombone and double bass duet, their parts are mostly the same throughout the song
Thanks for pointing that out. I couldn´t even hear it until I turned the volume up, but the double bass contributed a lot to this velvety sound.
True, but it is a bit harder to play those notes on trombone.
Martin ....Awesome ! !
Smoooooth!😎

Qué musica tan hermosa 💕

Kühnl is pretty famous in europe, great trombones !
Awesome tone
where can i buy this score for big band and trombon bass? i'm interested

In playing trombone for some 50 years and still in 3 BBands Bass Trombone - this is absolutely amazing!!! I WANT THAT COMPOSITION!!!
Patrick Williams has a website but you may need to send him an email through the contact section.
email sales@patrickwilliamsmusic.com score and parts currently $85 US dollars.
lol I love that hangover. The anti-lead trumpet

very nice!
so cool!

Martin is using a Thein BM mouthpiece. I`m using this type also. Plays very well!
Bravo Martin Van Den Berg.........
is that bart van lier playing tenor?
The bass trombone sounds wonderful. Wished that I had one even though I have a regular trombone.
Buy a used bass trombone and give it a try! You might find it the best thing you ever did. I did. Carole
BRAVO!
Just WOW!
from what I've found is you can only get it directly from Patrick Williams himself off his website... I may be wrong though.
what a performance!!! Is it possible to buy the score as arranged in the video execution?
