    the opening scene of this episode, with Erik Estrada (from CHiPs), is very similar to that of the villain's introduction in the 1966 film "the good, the bad and the ugly".

    12:07 "I don't know if he's a good person" while literally watching Maximus giving up a life of safety and comfort and risking himself to save a woman he's known for less than two days.
    People's reaction to Maximus is evidence to me that our modern society can't deal with ambiguity. You're either 'good' or 'bad', nothing in between. And the level of forgiveness towards The Ghoul's cruelty versus Maximus lying making him 'bad' shows that being confident and 'cool' allows you to get away with almost anything.

    • @kaojinn
      @kaojinn 2 месяца назад +6

      Maximus is hard to get a read on because a lot of the reason he acts the way he does is because of his past and upbringing. He lived in a surface city as a kid, lost his entire family and home, and was taken in by the Brotherhood of Steel. He felt grateful to them and looked up to them, but aside from giving him food and shelter, they treat him like garbage. He's got no confidence, no goals or motivations outside of what the Brotherhood tells him to do, and he's still thankful for the little bit he has. He's essentially a cultist, and the Brotherhood is a cult. After having the opportunity to travel with Knight Titus, he becomes completely disillusioned with the Brotherhood. The knights, his idols, are cowards and bullies. They aren't the saviors he thought they were. So we're seeing Maximus going from a brainwashed sheep, to taking the baby steps of acting with no guidance, and attempting to be the type of person he thought the knights really were. Maximus is often unsure of himself, and even more unsure of anyone doing anything simply for the good of another. His upbringing was very sheltered like Lucy's, except he was exposed to the dangers of the wasteland. They're good for each other as they learn about how the world really works outside of their small sheltered bubbles.
      The Ghoul on the other hand, he's decisive, and he's capable. Everything he does is in pursuit of his own goals. Sometimes its bad. Sometimes its just plain evil. Its always a means to an end for him though, and while its not always respectable, it sure is damn entertaining. In all fairness though, We met Cooper Howard when he was still a good guy trying to do the right thing. When we met The Ghoul, he was buried in a coffin with an IV drip of the solution that keeps him from turning feral being fed down to him. Someone wanted him trapped, helpless and sane. We dont really know how long he was being kept that way, but the first people who let him out wanted to use him. Chances are that trusting people is how he ended up trapped in that coffin, being slowly tortured with isolation. Its understandable he'd be a bit cranky.

    The Ghoul had to kill Tommy. Tommy was going for his gun . . .

    • @ryanowens7085
      @ryanowens7085 2 месяца назад +4

      The Ghoul antagonized Tommy. He wanted to kill him. The Ghoul could have deescalated the situation in many ways but he chose not to. He could have also shot the gun away or just winged Tommy. The Ghoul has killed hundreds if not thousands of people over a couple centuries. And he nearly killed Lucy at least three times. He does not value human life and although he may feel that he owes Lucy something for saving his life, one act of kindness is not going to fundamentally change a man that has been so evil for so long. So he kills Tommy when he really did not have to.

      @@ryanowens7085 Good point! The Ghoul also knew Tommy would eventually try and hunt him down, so he goaded Tommy into drawing . . .

      @@rowenatulley852 Bottom line is the Ghoul coldly boasted to a father that he had killed his eldest son and then goaded his other son to an early death in front of him for good measure. Given the Ghoul’s ease and the father’s terror, this is not likely the first child the Ghoul has killed nor even the first child the Ghoul has killed in front of a parent. There is most likely a long, long list of people who have lost parents, children, siblings, lovers, and friends to the Ghoul. Adding Tommy to that list would have been a very small drop in a very large bucket of those who would be justified in their revenge. The Ghoul is a charming monster with a sad past but he is still a monster that has created exponentially more suffering than he has received.

    The Ghoul called the dog "Dogmeat". Not as a name of affection, but as a symbol of its future use as last resort food. As you've probably noticed, food is pretty scarce in these parts. But the "Dogmeat" name is also used in the FO games which takes place on the East coast of the U.S. such as FO3 and FO4. Sure Cooper was a dog lover, but he is also a meat eater too. And I don't think any real dog lover would call their pet "Dogmeat". That name is usually reserved for someone about to die. (e.g. Didn't Private Hudson call Carter Burke "Dogmeat" in Aliens?)

    I think thats how the Ghoul ended up outside the Vault, his little girl wanted their dog, but the Vault wasn't taking dogs, so he rides back to get their dog. On his way back the Vault closes, he's trapped outside with it as more bombs go off. They survive for a while, but the dog dies, this making him even more bitter.

    • @kaojinn
      @kaojinn 2 месяца назад

      I'm betting that he gets his daughter back to his wife before the vault closes. He's estranged from his wife when we first see Cooper. The 2 dads at the party make a crack about him doing the birthday party so he can pay alimony. So knowing that, I bet he gets shut out of the vault and ends up only partially shielded from the radiation.

    Fallout is a near flawless show! My only criticism of it is that they killed off Michael Emerson (Dr. Wilzig) so early. He is a fantastic actor who deserved far more screen time. One peculiar thing about him is that on Lost, his real world wife portrayed his character's on screen mother.
