Matt, Funny story...Late last night I sat down at the kitchen table with a couple of bags of "baby bass" color Yum Dinger stick baits and a black Sharpie Extreme fade resistant marker. I colored their tails black and I left them out to dry well on the piece of wax paper I laid down to protect the table. This morning one of my daughters asked the other, "Why did Daddy color the end of those green beans black?" I overheard this and laughed and told them that they were fishing baits and that the black tail would help in making the bigger bass want to bite them. We all had a good laugh over this hack you taught me. Thanks Matt! 🙂

Missile Baits have some with black tails. I regularly use MEK, "Mend-It", and I often use it to modify, alter, or redesign soft plastics, not just for repairs.
It's very easy to cut the tip sections off a black stick bait and whatever other color stick bait you want to add it to. I also shorten or lengthen swimbaits, replace their tails for bigger or smaller, or alter their pitch for more or less action. You can even add the skirt section from a tube, to practically any PVC bait. The main consideration when doing that, is to make sure you are making perfect 90 degree, perpendicular, even cuts. There are always some methods that have yet to be discovered by the average angler.

Just a touch of antique news. Back in the 70’s my mom used to work for Bill Stembridge making Fliptail worms. She brought me home some junior worms in a accidental color that wasn’t supposed to happen. I took them up to Lake Lanier in Georgia. Caught the heck out of spots up there! Compared them to what’s the color out now and turned out it was similar to ice blue. Who knew ?😉👍

Last year I realized that I had around 20 packs of Senkos in colors that didn’t produce very well, I took a big black marker and colored a few of them completely black and did pretty good fishing with them. So I’ll definitely give this a try doing just the tail, if nothing else it’ll keep me from getting ink all over my fingers.

I've done this for years to mimic baby bass, also some chartreuse dip for bluegill. I think Yum puts out stick baits with colored tails, but I don't like their action as much as the original Senko.

I’ve never fished the baby bass color on any lure but this year I’ve been fishing a lake that’s pretty clear and has a small bass population so I thought I’d give it a try with Flukes and the new Yammy Tanuki, I’m glad I did! I’ve caught some good fish using it. It’s been my best color on that lake(I’m usually a black & blue and junebug guy). I have to try the black tip trick to see if it makes it even better.

Have you tried putting the Hover Rig in a senko type worm? I wonder if you would catch fish with it in the middle, like a hybrid wacky jig thing? Senko type worms look like they would catch fish in the saltwater for sure but I haven't played with it yet. They should be good on a jig head unless the tail biters ruin them. That's a big problem around the Chesapeake with croakers and spots ruining soft plastics and Gulp especially. When it cools down they're supposed to go away and I can try a senko for stripers and redfish.

I bought some baby bass Senkos at Ollie's the other day. The first time I tried them I caught one over 3lbs with it. The stupid thing was I got the bite while I was trying to get a knot out of my line. I was working on it and my line started moving. Needless to say I reeled the knot on and ended up having to cut 20 feet of line off.

I've never done it with stick baits, but I take a black marker and go around just the edges of the paddle tail swim baits I throw- when I'm fishing clear water. In muddy to stained water I don't think doing just the edges would matter- you'd probably want to paint the whole tail. Stick baits I usually dip in chartreus- JJ's Magic. Because bluegill tend to have a little chartreus in their tails. Plus, JJ's got that stank going on- it's loud.
