I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.
Matt, Funny story...Late last night I sat down at the kitchen table with a couple of bags of "baby bass" color Yum Dinger stick baits and a black Sharpie Extreme fade resistant marker. I colored their tails black and I left them out to dry well on the piece of wax paper I laid down to protect the table. This morning one of my daughters asked the other, "Why did Daddy color the end of those green beans black?" I overheard this and laughed and told them that they were fishing baits and that the black tail would help in making the bigger bass want to bite them. We all had a good laugh over this hack you taught me. Thanks Matt! 🙂
Hahaha
Tactical bassin was just talking about coloring the tips of baby bass plastics black. Now you're giving this tip out as well. Everyone's going to start doing it.
What video did they talk about that in because I am subscribed to them and watch all the videos that come out and of Matt’s
i saw that . I had already recorded this one and scheduled to come out today. its becoming very popular!
So are you saying it's popular now or bagging on Matt?
@@CoopOutdoorsy88in the darter head one
@@FounderOf4 quit playing the bitch!
Very cool. Makes sense. That's how I spot bass cruising. I see the black tip.
me too!
I keep a variety of sharpies in my boat to add a little something. It’s was more a confidence thing to me I always thought but feel even more confident about doing it now! Smarter than I thought I was I guess lol. Thanks buddy for all you do!
Same. I got a dry bag with nail polish, steel wool and about every color sharpie made
i keep a whole pack myself
Matt you are awesome man!!! To be able to give us weekend anglers valuable tips like this and take the time to reply to alot of the comments tells me alot about your yourself!!! I find that I keep deleting alot of my subscriptions to others because you are a straight foward class act guy! Thanks brother you the best!
Thanks for the support!
Missile Baits have some with black tails. I regularly use MEK, "Mend-It", and I often use it to modify, alter, or redesign soft plastics, not just for repairs.
It's very easy to cut the tip sections off a black stick bait and whatever other color stick bait you want to add it to. I also shorten or lengthen swimbaits, replace their tails for bigger or smaller, or alter their pitch for more or less action. You can even add the skirt section from a tube, to practically any PVC bait. The main consideration when doing that, is to make sure you are making perfect 90 degree, perpendicular, even cuts. There are always some methods that have yet to be discovered by the average angler.
thanks for sharing!
That works good with the zoom super flukes in baby bass color around the post spawn fry guarders. I dot the tail tips and dot on a few dots for the lateral line with the sharpie
awesome!
Good video, the black tip makes sense natural forage
go for it!
It seems like these small changes on a bait really make a big difference! It is crazy as to how this is and thanks for sharing this with us Matt!!
you bet!
I have not done the black tip color but damn, it makes total sense, guess what Im going to try, thanks for the tip!!!
go for it!
This color on a hover rig is really good! Caught them on the general and Yamamoto colored black.
Awesome!
Great tip! Been carrying a Blk Spike It marker for yrs. Use it much more than chartreuse
Good stuff!
Thanks as always new tips help out. I do not have a boat but they help me out as a bank fisherman
Glad to help
I use the Storm Largo Shad swimbaits...in bluegill color, and the tails are white. I color mine with a blue spike it marker on the outside of the paddle tail...and a chartreuse strip down the middle. Works for me!
Sounds great!
Thanks Matt for the information.
I have a Good Tip for you when fishing Table Rock Lake. Use a Purple Worm with a White Tail when fishing the Steep Bluffs in the Summer.😁👍👍
Thanks for the tip!
Caught a ton on the Ocho with the black tip at St Lawrence and Cayuga . Great tip,. Works great on smallies
awesome
Huh , good one Matt I tell you what the main thing this made me think about was where the fish is targeting it’s strike seems like the tail in these instances good one thanks I’m gonna try it.
Absolutely
Thanks Matt!! Great new info and tip. You are very appreciated!
Glad it was helpful!
We do that here in NC aswell! Very effective in clear conditions this time of year!!
Very cool!
Twenty plus years ago we started dipping tails on lizards to help show some movement. It’s a great tip. Thank you
That is awesome!
Less scent on the bait, more color in the right spot suddenly changes into additional bites possibly bigger old dogs with new techniques ,it’s funny how I started learning everything from old fisherman added my way of thinking an it’s always produced ,fishing for winter steelhead an bass fishing I had to keep building a bigger garage now it’s just the opacity learning from the best young anglers filling in the gaps between ages ,always a pleasure having a great day
yep
Have always kept a pack of 5 color sharpies in tackle bag. Use red for eye on senko type, black for braid, green or orange for baits, doesn't last all day but helps at times. Have put black dots but not whole tail. Great tip.
i have lots of colors as well
Just a touch of antique news. Back in the 70’s my mom used to work for Bill Stembridge making Fliptail worms. She brought me home some junior worms in a accidental color that wasn’t supposed to happen. I took them up to Lake Lanier in Georgia. Caught the heck out of spots up there! Compared them to what’s the color out now and turned out it was similar to ice blue. Who knew ?😉👍
awesome!
Appreciate gonna give it a shot Thanks for video.
you bet!
Thanks Matt. I have them on order, 4" and 5" Looking forward to trying them.
good luck!
As muddy as the water is here with all the rain I'm tempted to dip the whole thing in black. Got 3" this morning with tons of lightning. Waters with 3-5 foot of visibility are chocolate milk. Many of the ramps have been closed because of high water. Makes me want to buy a kayak.😮
thats a lot of rain
Last year I realized that I had around 20 packs of Senkos in colors that didn’t produce very well, I took a big black marker and colored a few of them completely black and did pretty good fishing with them. So I’ll definitely give this a try doing just the tail, if nothing else it’ll keep me from getting ink all over my fingers.
awesome!
I've done this for years to mimic baby bass, also some chartreuse dip for bluegill. I think Yum puts out stick baits with colored tails, but I don't like their action as much as the original Senko.
awesome!
Thanks!! I have never heard about this before. Wow. Will try it this weekend.
Hope you enjoy
Just wanted to reach out quick and thank you for the hover rig. I bought some when they were first available but hadn't really fished them until 2 days ago and caught my first fish on it. What a blast and they wouldn'teave it alone
glad they are working!
Thanks Matt,
you bet!
Been doing this for a long time, even on flukes!! It works for sure.
awesome!
Sounds like a sure winner Thanks matt.
yep!
I learned that technique from Tim Little at Tactical Bassin a year ago and have done well neko rigging baby bass Yamamoto senkos with a 1/32 oz nail weight. 😉 I agree entirely with you It’s a great technique, especially in Florida!
Awesome!
I’ve never fished the baby bass color on any lure but this year I’ve been fishing a lake that’s pretty clear and has a small bass population so I thought I’d give it a try with Flukes and the new Yammy Tanuki, I’m glad I did! I’ve caught some good fish using it. It’s been my best color on that lake(I’m usually a black & blue and junebug guy). I have to try the black tip trick to see if it makes it even better.
awesome!
🎉
wow. I'll give it a go. Thanks for the tip Matt.
you bet!
I make my own Senkos. I have lots with different color tips. Black with a pink tip does well.
awesome!
I've only used a black sharpie to color my hi-vis braid a few feet above my lure. Going to try the black tip plastics next. Thank Matt!
give it a try!
Just between you and me.... the secret color is Bumblebee (by YUM), it's a yellow and black swirl and one of my favorites. But don't tell anyone.
nice!
Matt...Harpeth River has the 5 1/2in with a black tail
awesome!
Matt
as a berkley sponsor can you tell us whats up with the "General" color "purple" and why so many tackle companies dont carry it. special run? stock color? you have mentioned it in the past. Pure does have the G.P. black in stock but no purple
im not sure if they are discontinuing or not...
Have you tried putting the Hover Rig in a senko type worm? I wonder if you would catch fish with it in the middle, like a hybrid wacky jig thing? Senko type worms look like they would catch fish in the saltwater for sure but I haven't played with it yet. They should be good on a jig head unless the tail biters ruin them. That's a big problem around the Chesapeake with croakers and spots ruining soft plastics and Gulp especially. When it cools down they're supposed to go away and I can try a senko for stripers and redfish.
yep its one of my favorite ways to fish it. it will glide long distances!
@@MattStefanFishing cool. Sounds like something saltwater trout and redfish might go for
Sounds interesting! Gonna give er a try!
Please do!
Awesome tip I'm going to try it thanks 👍🐟
Have fun!
I'm going to try the black marker trick on the back of the deal on a chatterbait this weekend
nice!
Been using a baby bass super fluke with the tail dipped in black die for a few years , think I saw Andrew Upshaw do it on a video
Very cool
Man I was thinking today, as I was on the water, to color my swim baits tail black because the majority of small bait fish we’re young bass! I guess a tackle warehouse order is coming 😂! Thanks for always sharing what works for you Matt 🎣
you bet!
I fish with a green pumpkin with black tail 4” Slider worm all the time.
Nice
Great 👍 info Matt, really appreciate you, got my fishing buddy to subscribe. 😊
Awesome! Thank you!
Thank you Matt. That's an old Matt Allen trick.
Nice!
Great tip!
thanks!
I bought some baby bass Senkos at Ollie's the other day. The first time I tried them I caught one over 3lbs with it. The stupid thing was I got the bite while I was trying to get a knot out of my line. I was working on it and my line started moving. Needless to say I reeled the knot on and ended up having to cut 20 feet of line off.
awesome!
I tried it today I’m liking it Great tip
Great to hear!
I've never done it with stick baits, but I take a black marker and go around just the edges of the paddle tail swim baits I throw- when I'm fishing clear water. In muddy to stained water I don't think doing just the edges would matter- you'd probably want to paint the whole tail. Stick baits I usually dip in chartreus- JJ's Magic. Because bluegill tend to have a little chartreus in their tails. Plus, JJ's got that stank going on- it's loud.
nice!
Tried this just this season on a gizzard shad lake I fish. I tried it on flipping baits, bought some shad colored Biffle bugs, dipped the tail in black and colored the appendages pink. Got immediate results.
nice!
That's is very interesting. It sound right to me
give it a try!
I feel like such an idiot not realizing this earlier LOL I was just fishing today and was seeing a bunch of small bass that all had black tails! Thanks for the tip this will be utilized
Give it atry
nice content keep up the great content
Thanks, will do!
Cool. Maybe draw some black spots along the sides, might be even better.
go for it!
Been doing this for a long time on baby bass Senkos and swimbaits
Awesome!
I let my 7 year old neice draw on flukes with permanent markers. She made a color she called clown shoes that was a white fluke with a blue back and pink spots. I caught a few walleye on it in the northwoods. Smell didn't seem to matter to the gravel lizards. Good stuff as usual sir.
awesome!
I shall try this… thanks
go for it!
Is there a scent in your experience that works better for Spike-It? I see TW carries Garlic, Gamefish and Unscented.
i use the garlic
That's not a color combination I've ever tried before. Seems almost like a no brainer that it would be good. I'll have to break out the old Do-It molds and make a few batches and see what happens!
give it a try!
What about using on swim bats
go for it!
I would have guessed the smell from a sharpie marker on your soft plastic would completely turn off the bass.
That’s why i prefer to buy the Berkley Maxscent generals that come as that color already
Easier to dip it in black dye for sure…great idea though
Easier just to buy them with the black tail
Black in general is good. People forget fish love eating leeches...and they move similar to a whacky worm.
yep
Omnia is the only retailer I've seen carry it.
awesome!
Missile baits actually has a color called baby bass tail now
nice!
Try a baby bass colored senko and color just 1/4" of the tail black. $$$$$
awesome!
I have that color
nice!
We can put 3 colors on any bait , plus a tail color , so truthfully that’s 4 colors
Awesome
Who wouldve guessed sharpie has better scent than Berkley, garlic, clothing pockets.......
haha
Personally, I wouldn't use an actual Sharpie...because of the chemical smell. Interesting. Spike-It, all day long! 😁
thats why i love some companies are making the color now.
👍
Thanks for watching!
🍺Try and find a “stone cold” colored RKCrawler crankbait.
sounds like a challenge!
Check out this bass
thanks for watching
👍👍👍👍👍
thanks for watching
We can make you any color
Awesome
shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Thanks!
Baby bass color is overrated. The best color is dog penis. Hard to find but brings in the numbers. Thanks Matt! 😂
Have you tried it here ?
I have tried it here it works
it works!
Thanks Matt...probably one you thought maybe I'll keep this to myself?
yep
If that works on a senko it will probably work on a fluke or any straight tailed swim bait or even a boot tail.
Yep
Been doing this for a long time, even on flukes!! It works for sure.
Awesome!
👍
thanks for watching!
