  • Bob Stoops and Matt Leinart recall when Oklahoma made a late push ahead of the 2000 national championship game to get the future Heisman winner in a Sooners’ uniform.
Matt Leinart is about as USC as they come, but he strongly considered Oklahoma as a recruit. On this episode of Conversations with Coach, they discuss Stoops’ visiting Leinart’s family home, his mom’s cookies and how a dinner at Applebee’s ultimately helped Leinart to make his decision to pick Los Angeles, California over Norman, Oklahoma.

Good on for Coach making a friend in the TV biz. Having said that, I lived in San Diego and watched the whole Reggie Bush story unfold. Some pretty questionable "promoters" rented a house for his parents, there were allegations that money passed under the table all for the right to represent Bush in his pro career.
That was 20 years ago; the rules have changed with NIL and that's all good for the players today. But Bush, with USC taking a blind eye to the arrangement, broke every rule in the book about retaining an amateur status and not dealing with money men.
Pete Carroll knew the university was in hot water; just before the sanctions and taking Bush's Heisman back occurred, Carroll slipped out the back door to take the Seahawks job. A big explosion happened to the football program and no one was there to take responsibility for it except Mike Garrett, the USC Athletic Director.
    From ESPN:
USC was hit with a two-year bowl ban, four years' probation, loss of scholarships and forfeits of an entire year's games for improper benefits to Bush.
The NCAA found that Bush, identified as a "former football student-athlete," was ineligible beginning at least by December 2004, dating to the Trojans' 2004 national championship.
USC was penalized for a lack of institutional control in the ruling by the NCAA following its four-year investigation. The report cited numerous improper benefits for Bush and former basketball player O.J. Mayo, who spent just one year with the Trojans.
The Trojans barely avoided further punishment that would have removed one of the sport's most popular teams from television. The committee discussed a TV ban, but decided the penalties handed down "adequately respond to the nature of violations and the level of institutional responsibility."
The Trojans have been under suspicion for years. The NCAA, the Pac-10 and even the FBI conducted investigations into the Bush family's business relationships and USC's responsibility for the culture around its marquee football team.
    End ESPN
It was not a pretty sight; USC forfeited all their games and their national championship was vacated.
Bob Stoops is being generous in his praise to a fault. He coached some equally good, if not better players at Oklahoma that went on to even greater achievement. Stoops and OU should be commended for doing it the right way: within the rules and the spirit of amateur sports.

Reggie Bush was more electric but Adrian Peterson was by far a more effective runner. I would never trade Peterson for Bush.
But I agree Bush deserved his Heisman then and deserves it back now. He's been punished enough and with NIL it's all now pointless. NCAAF as an organization has major issues.
