To clean the yellow stitching use a toothbrush and washing up liquid in the same manner you would use a toothbrush with toothpaste. Once you have worked up a good soapy layer leave it for about 10 minutes then rinse off under a running tap.
So, 2ish years ago I bought a pair of slip resistant Docs for work and I’m just now learning how to take care of them. The upper on one boot has flaked and cracked where the toe bends, so I’m hoping to repair them as best I can. These videos are great! Thank you!
I recommend the same. Conditioners contain oils will will resist dye from absorbing properly and can make the color hazy and splotchy. It makes more passes necessary for color fast. I typically apply two coats of Fiebings directly after the fine sanding so the color goes deeper and richer. After it dries, then I begin conditioning to regain something similar to the original luster.
I kept wondering why he didn't do that step before the Renovateur, just an oversight? Of was he trying to create the original look where it would patina brown overtime?
Outstanding! Real old world craftsmanship always gives me goosebumps. Back in the day, there use to be gray-haired black men shoe polishers at the biggest airports, especially at military base airports, making a damn good living by using the same methods. That's what first came to mind.
This video is so fantastic. I have a pair of docs with really soft leather so they're a little more high maintenance. I got them when I was in middle school and didn't know how to take care of them. I found my grandpa's old boot cleaning kit and learned how and now I clean them routinely. It always makes me sad to see people with worn-down leather shoes knowing that it's not that difficult to take care of them, alot of people just don't know how.
Really quite sad. I see people at my job who complain about their leather boots cracking and whatnot. The newer generation has become so used to sneakers and other shoes that require zero care and maintenance it would seem.
To clean the yellow stitching use a toothbrush and washing up liquid in the same manner you would use a toothbrush with toothpaste. Once you have worked up a good soapy layer leave it for about 10 minutes then rinse off under a running tap.

Would love to see an episode or two based on those specific boot types. & Thank you for your knowledgeable input on all of your other video reviews. Always looking forward to your next!
I was cringing when you were painting the dye on around the contrast stitching, i would have used blue painters tape to mask off the thread first. But you are the pro, and I would never attempt a sanding job to begin with. lol.
I’ve just found a pair of really bashed up vintage docs online and they are on their way to me! Wasn’t sure I’d be able to get them looking decent again so this video is a huge help thank you! Mine are green so not sure about the dye part… I’d be worried about not getting the right shade 🤔
hey weston, great video as always! Small suggestion: maybe leave on the product information and instruction per step a bit longer on screen so we can have more time to read through them? Personal opinion of course. All the best!
I'm getting so many ideas for changing color on a pair of old boots! Your channel is amazing!!! I would love to see what a pair of Corcoran 1500 are all about. I've been wearing them for a decade as a fashion boot, because they're truly amazing once broken in, but sure are made for real war action and it would be nice to see what's inside of them. After all, those are the real deal when you compare them to these Docs.
I also id a pair of dr martens they turned out well as yours did but always use shoe trees when you start that way the shoe ,boot, or what ever you are working on the leather is fully stretched but what a good job
I love docs. I have always bought them cheap on Ebay. They just don't Last long. Even the English made one's always fall apart, either the leather rips or the sole gets annihilated. As long as i can get my size on Ebay i will keep buying. Great video.
Hard to generalize, I have 2 pairs of Docs that I bought in London while I was in college. So either 1994 or 5. Neither have ever left my shoe rotation. The soles are worn down, but the uppers look great save for a few scuffs and scratches. No resto work done on them save for polish every so often. Just my experience. Can't speak to the longevity of the majority of them now, which are made in Vietnam or SE Asia...

those look great after the restore. The one thing I noticed though is it seems like a lot of the stitching on the heel and ankle was broken, so while they do look great now they are eventually going to need to be restitched because I don't see that heel/ankle lasting very long before the stitches start popping out. It's probably going to be more cost efficient to just get a new pair at that point.
Cool, although unless you're using DM's to kick rocks around or sandpaper or similar it's unlikely the tops will ever get that bad before the soles literally wear through to your socks so this process isn't generally gonna be necessary. However, are any of these products any good at preventing the cracking that happens where the toe box meets the first set of eyelets? Kinda where the crease is where the boots bend as you walk. That's a real problem. The DM's 'wonder balsam' is hopeless and so is standard boot polish, maybe some of the products shown here might work better.
Just found this channel and I'm loving it. too bad I haven't seen any videos about boots for women. I'm a forestry engineer and it's hard finding really good working boots that are not very manly 😅

Amazing job. I suspect the cost of the shoe care products might exceed the cost of a new pair of boots. Of course, you can re-use those products again and again. But, still I would be curious to know what the actual numbers are.
I just bought Renovateur/Creme D'or/Pate De Lux for my own Docs. Mine are Made in Englands so they're a bit more expensive than the average pair, but the trio was about 70$ after tax. The rags are just cotton and you can use old tshirts as do many boot enthusiasts. My saddle soap I purchased for my Red Wings was about 12$ and the brush was maybe around the same? Decent shoe trees are around 20$, so all in all you'd probably spend around 110$ or so? Not bad for keeping your leather healthy and happy! That said, Saphir is absolutely not necessary for boot care and you can get a boot cleaning routine for around 30-50$, to be honest.
But if I want the exact same pair of Docs I bought in the 90's then I am highly unlikely to be able to find originals, therefore the shoes to me become priceless. The products are like cooking ingredients. It's an investment up front but will last a long time.
I thrifted some gloss soft pink dr martens for my daughter but i want to restore the gloss, is it the same process? Please your advice, thnk you in advance🤗

Could you tell me if it is possible to fix my running shoes? They are Nike air style with a plastic bubble piece on the heel to absorb the shock or every stride you take. They are almost brand new and I loved them because they cushioned very well and I tend to get knee pain if I run too much on hard surfaces. The shoes would have been perfect for running on a treadmill but the problem was I was running outdoors. There was a paved running trail near my place but to get there I had to cross a road that had gravel on the shoulder. I stepped on one of these rocks which was sharp enough to basically give me a flat tire on one of my shoes. I think if I could find a soft plastic I could inject to replace the air they could still be used. But I have no idea what material could work. Thanks for reading my message and the feedback in advance!
