  • Tucked halfway up a mountain, deep in Japan's Wakayama prefecture you will find what just might be Japan's most beautiful shrine. A stunning pagoda set against a mountain waterfall is really just the beginning of what makes Nachi Taisha so spectacular.

You know how you can somehow... smell a picture? Well, this is one of those but in video form. The cool mountain air with a hint of petrichor, the cypress (hinoki) and pine whether its leaves or wood, the burning incense, the sandalwood sawdust used to purify yourself before you enter a shrine, with a hint of vegetal moss as you crunch up the stairs or down the trail? Oh yes.
Love the chimes at 3:45 and the gravel crunch ASMR at 4:05.
Great work here Norm. I thought nothing would rival the Changchun shrine in Taiwan's Taroko Gorge in terms of mixing nature, running water, and religion/faith. Guess I was wrong. Excited for the next video!

Shooting sun or shade/weather. Do you have a favorite? Up until last December/ January, I think I would've said nicer weather [less to hold onto when shooting 😅]. The mountains definitely have a deeper, more reverent, expectant feel in the rain and snow. I shot Karumadera and Doryoson (Daiyuzan Saijoji Temple)in the rain/mist, and Nikko's Toshogu in the snow. Shooting in the snow is possibly my new favorite. Remember to pack your hand warmers, gloves are not enough 😆. So glad you got to check Nachi off your bucket list. This was spectacular. 💓

I was there in November 2019! It's sooo beautiful, not just the pagoda and the waterfall, but also the Nachi Taisha shrine, up the mountains, with the gorgeous view from above on the surrounding mountains, it's just perfection, I loved it a lot (despite the maaaany steps to climb to reach it! Somehow nobody shows them :D )
And I agree with your friend, I also took the iconic photo from that spot, but it doesn't give the feel of the surrounding mountains and forests, it's so much better to see it in real life :)

@@TokyoLens i have noticed this and I wonder: is it because (in Tokyo anyway) there are so many things on upper floors that with a see thru umbrella you can still see where you are going without tipping the umbrella back and getting wet/getting in someone's way?
This said, Japan seems to have an awesome umbrella culture, and I don't just mean amagasa parasols. There are companies that use more ribs in their umbrellas to make them sturdier and longer lasting. (I may have 2 umbrella shops on my "next time in Tokyo" list...)

    • @TokyoLens
      @TokyoLens  4 года назад +2

It’s just a really popular umbrella style
And I think it’s really good in a good city as crowded as Tokyo

I first saw this spectacular mountain waterfall in a BBC documentary;. I was mesmerized by its serene beauty. The BBC video captured its unique beauty even better than in this video. It was taken on a sunny day, and the shrine was packed with Japanese pilgrims. One could feel what it's really like to be there in person. You could almost breathe the mountain air and experience the silence of the place as the waterfall cascaded slowly down the mountain. It was almost like heaven. I'm going to use the image of this mountain waterfall in my meditation practice to induce inner peace and tranquillity as I meditate.

I knew it would be a gorgeous video, but I wasn't expecting to cry through most of it. Stunning video, Norm, to say the least. I've never been to Japan, but has always wanted to go.
I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis 8 years ago (I just turned 44) and I was hoping to get to Japan before I am no longer able to walk at all. The pandemic has made that less possible. The tears were for the best video I have ever seen of this place and because of the very real chance I'll never see it in person and up close. Thank you so much for sharing it and for spending the time to do so. When I went to Japan, this shrine was the highest on my list. But then again, just how remote it is and how hard it is to get to, I had to scratch it from my plans because I didn't have enough time. Next time though, this will be my number one priority.

Wow, that was absolutely beautiful. How have I lived in Japan for 20 years and not known about this place?? And it’s only a couple hours drive from where I live! (Mie prefecture)
Thank you for introducing this place, I will check it out soon!

I was here a few years ago. Till today this stands out as my number 1 location in Japan. The mystic vibes you get with the altitude & waterfall is like a stairway to heaven.

Wow, just wow. I‘m honestly speechless, it’s really really beautiful. Thank you for making this video! I hope that one day I can somehow get up there and see it with my own eyes. The cloudy/rainy weather kinda gave the shrine a really dreamlike atmosphere, love it!

one of the favorite places in Japan that I have been to. I stood on top of the wall for about 10 minutes just waiting for the entrance of the shrine to be clear of people so i could get nice shot. Just hoping I wouldn't fall the whole time :) But didn't fall, got a great shot, and have a poster sized print hanging in my living room.
thanks for sharing, gave me flashbacks.

i remember the first time i watched this video and being absolutely starstruck that a place like this actually exists. this seems like it's perfectly cut from a movie with the stark contrast between the shrine and the waterfall. another gorgeous place added to my japan bucketlist!

this place looks so incredibly serene, I can't help but imagine myself waking up there to be greeted by the mountains, I also absolutely love the clouds they add so much atmosphere and the mountain that are engulfed im them remind me of my home. Great video and absolutely beautiful shots.

Been wanting to get there the first time I saw the picture years ago. I've been avoiding Wakayama ever since then, purely so I can head to Nachi to do the place justice. Figured I may as well do the Kumano Kodo as well while I'm at it! Hopefully that day will come soon.

      Real answer:
Saving up for a proper cinema camera
Keep loosing footage and audio with my DSLRs 😔
This video was just made out of scraps of personal footage, but should have been at least 3x the length! .... had things gone more smoothly lol 🙄
Gimme a little more time to save up!!

One of the best times of the year to visit IMO. I went about four years ago during the early part of June and while yes we were wet and it was humid as heck, it was mostly empty and truly magical! Can't wait to go back.
