    I’m loving the shift. Sold my alt arts into the hype for double what I paid and now have a shadowless Charizard, a grand party, first edition lugia, first edition T17 and shining mewtwo. Alt arts will be available in years to come these cards in mint condition just don’t come up as much. Popularity and opinions shift but I’ll take rarity over hype any day.

    I think vintage cards will always be solid and vary sought after.
    A lot of the original cards were not treated vary well, not like today's cards which almost most everyone cares for thier cards now.
    Back in then hardly anyone kept thier collection in mint condition making the cards even rarer, and Most parents back then didn't care nor have the mind set to collect and save them. So I think vintage will always hold value.

    The way I view it, nostalgia is something that comes in waves. Especially if FOMO is involved. A strong current will bring another wave, but the wave is always going to reach the shore eventually. Just for another wave to eventually form.
    I think it’s also important to think about what is considered vintage. The Gen 4 and Gen 5 era are on a pretty decent trajectory upwards. Platinum Arceus booster packs are double the price of what you could get them for a year and a half ago. That’s why it’s so important to know keep up with the big channels. Just like how their videos can pump up a modern card/set, the same can go for semi vintage sets. Anytime one of these creators gets a good pull from an older set, that set immediately booms for a short period of time. Less channels are opening base set or jungle packs in comparison to gens 3-7 for example. More availability, it’s cheaper, and it still has that vintage hype when ripping packs.
    Edit: Also want to add that the addition of other TCGs like One Piece doing so well has changed the way many people view collecting modern cards. If modern One Piece cards can hold weight simply for the fact it’s from a massive IP, why couldn’t Pokemon cards do the same?

  • @GigaChadow
    @GigaChadow 2 месяца назад +5

    It’s so so true about vintage being out of style right now. Advertising of modern is a knock out play by the Pokémon company but man won’t it be interesting when the 90s kids get an influx of cash again and have nothing to spend it on (when kids leave the nest for college, when retirement comes up, etc etc). Not saying it’ll happen for sure but hey we saw what happened after 2020
    Just so much fun to think about with how markets work and all that. Keep up the great content man, solid picks on the cards too!

      i'm not sure you use new money right, see a lot of people use these term new and old money wrong. new money means people that got rich suddenly opposed to people of wealthy families who knows what's to be rich since their birth. i don't see the link between new money and liking vintage cards i think you mean new into the hobby ?

    • @IneptCardCollector
      @IneptCardCollector 2 месяца назад

      @@bigshun4301 eh, not exactly, but I could have worded it better. "New money" as in adults with adult money getting into the hobby as opposed to adults with adult money who used to collect as a kid. I have been very into card collecting since the 80's, but I'm new to TCG collecting.
      As far as you seeing people using it incorrectly, it's become a colloquial phrase the way I'm using it. People often say it somewhat tongue in cheek. We're not rich, which we know, but we're spending thousands on cards, which is insane to normies. So it's somewhat in jest.

    Speaking for my own experience as someone who just got into the hobby this year with my 9 year old - he thinks it’s neat to have some older cards, but if I give him the option of a $100 modern card or a $100 vintage card, he’s picking modern because they look cooler. Same with his little buddies. Modern looks so good that I find it hard to believe the vintage buyer pool is going to expand too much in the coming years.

    10:38 That one is shocking. It went all way down. I believe the bubble (April-October 2021) was a one time only event. It was perfectly staged by Gary Haase. I don't know if he did it out of luck or if he a mastermind. Then it led to Logan Paul's huge purchase. This is where it rocketed it to the moon. Then 3 years later, the dust subsided. Even the videos about big money booster pack and box opening have completely disappeared. There are only left the infamous mystery box business (i.e. kids gambling business) and the post vintage and modern pack opening RUclips channels. Who knows if an event like that will come back. I don't think it will ever come back because there is a lot of diversity in the art in the modern stuff, so it's impossible to say who's got the best one.

    There is no guarantee anyone will even care about vintage in another 5-10 years, the niche will continue to shrink. 2020 was a once in our lifetime event for TCGs.

    • @liamsolomon9122
      @liamsolomon9122 2 месяца назад +1

      No guarantee but the fact that vintage is worth what it is today after 30+ years I think it's safe to say that they will hold a lot of value for another 5-10 years. High quality brands/assets tend to go up in value over a long period of time. It's just normal. Either way, high quality cards whether vintage or modern will probably go up over a long period of time. Welp cheers

      Calling vintage a niche is wayyy off base. The popularity during 1999-2002 was insane. Base set was reprinted 4 times in the first 2 years due to popularity. A large percentage of collectors were around for the original release and have nostalgia for those sets. The last few booms saw vintage prices spike just as much (if not more) than modern cards. I was eyeing 1st ed PSA 10 Zard for $16k in 2017, then saw it rise to $350k in 2020. Who knows what it'll rise to during the next boom.

    Definitely a good time to buy low pop, mid/high end vintage. I bought a 1st edition shadowless gyarados PSA 9 (my favourite base set holo) for £850 for earlier on in the year. Could have bought the nidoking with it and still wouldn't have cost as much as a Moonbreon at it's height.
    The way I look at it as well. How much does a heavy 1st edition base set pack cost? £7-10k for that money you can buy like 7-9 1st edition PSA 9 holos from the set if you wanted to.
    I do love collecting modern alt arts as well because the artwork is undeniably better in most cases but honestly the classics will be superior long term. I'm including crystals, shinings and gold stars in that wheelhouse as well.

    Hey Phillip,
    I'm a big fan of your channel and really enjoy how engaging and well-produced your videos are. Your insights into Pokemon card investments are always on point. I wanted to bring something to your attention that I think could be a game-changer in the market right now.
    Have you considered looking into CGC perfect 10 graded cards? They're currently available at relatively affordable prices given their rarity. The CGC perfect 10 label is set to become a piece of Pokemon history, especially since CGC has discontinued this grading tier. This means the population of cards with a perfect 10 grade will never increase, similar to numbered sports cards.
    Moreover, there's a significant opportunity for cross-grading to a BGS black label. I've successfully cross-graded two cards myself-Beckett charges $25 to review and then facilitates the cross-grade process. It's a potential avenue to enhance the value of these already rare cards.
    I believe this could be a major investment opportunity that hasn't received much attention yet. Take a look at the data yourself-it might make for a great video idea that benefits the community. You could be the first to explore this topic in depth.
    Keep up the fantastic work on your channel!
    Best regards,
    Fitz

    Vintage cards will always be collectible. Even if there might be a lull in interest right now, and prices could dip, there will always be interest. Prices were unusually inflated during the pandemic and later on due to over-hyping by influencers like Logan Paul abd Poke Rev. But vintage will always have a soft spot in the hearts of collectors. If you compare the art by today's standards, that is an unfair comparison. Printing technology has improved over decades in between. Besides, the art from golden age comics are nothing compared to today's standards, but golden age comics continue to be collectible.

      Art is only one of many factors that collectors consider. In the case of vintage, there are definitely other factors playing heavily into the high prices. Nostalgia, age, and scarcity are all on vintage's side. I also collected in 1999 and still collect vintage today, and I'm far from the only one.

      Art is not the only one. But it is extremely important. The giratina alt art looks 10x better than any card in that box. It's also a legendary pokemon which makes it increase. But to say Art isn't one of the biggest factors is just wrong. If there is no wow or cool factor when you pull it, then it isn't going to have near the same buyer market as a card with nostalgia.
