The oldest gas balloon world championships were held in Gruyère, Switzerland. Internationally acclaimed balloonists were on hand. The goal of this sport is to travel as far as possible before having to land.

Yes it can be. Like the Hindenburg. During a gas balloon flight, the hydrogen mixes with oxygen and becomes more unstable. I lost two very good friends in a accident during the Gordon Bennett race many years ago. Both excellent pilots with a fierce desire to win. It shook the world of balloon since these two fine people, revered by all competitors lost family in that event.
