Lakers job was about making a splash in the news…. The requirements/resume are secondary imo… all the coaches with names are too old or already have jobs/have already said no in previous private conversations I’d imagine! It’s about the groceries not the person watching the meal cook 👌🏼😆
At the end of the day, it all comes down to the results. If the lakers make it to the top 4 in the west, his coaching background before all this won’t matter. If they fall short of the playoff expectations, they’re gonna fire the coach anyway regardless of experience.
It’s about your story. Sam Cassell may have the resume, but he has not milked his resume like JJ by being everywhere nba-related - that’s an intriguing narrative.

A lot of role players on championship teams have become successful coaches (Phil Jackson, -Larry Bird- , Steve Kerr, KC Jones, Rick Carlisle, etc.). Lakers might have missed out on a good one.

Chauncey was an assistant coach in 2020. JJ was hired with no history of coaching or executive experience with a NBA franchise. Frankly, if LeBron wasn’t on the team, he would have never received serious consideration.

Could it be that Sam Cassell, doesn't impress or do well in interviews with the GMs, Head of Basketball Operations or Owners? It doesn't matter if the players like him or how many years he played or coached if you can't impress the people that make the decisions. There is no line or paying your dues when it comes to jobs like that. If you are told, you need to do this or that first, that's a red flag that you are not wanted for that position. Most GMs and owners already have in mind the coach they want and therefore the type of coach they want. The less you fit that preconceived notion, the less likely you are to stand a real chance of ever getting the job.
Having said that, clearly the head coaches that get the job see the value in Sam Cassell, because he keeps getting jobs as an assistant. He simply hasn't come across the right GM/Owner combination that's willing to roll the dice on him.
