Haitian King I feel bad for all the non African people who want to be immersed in African music and culture but have to worry about “cultural appropriation” 😂
@@mercsulky honestly i feel the same, not just for african culture but for every non-white countries culture. For me at least it feels that i cant enjoy it without being judged by someone
Fr! I'm so lucky to have stumbled upon this. Makes me want to go to the country for a few years and just immerse myself in all aspects of the culture as much as possible.
I highly recommend watching the documentary about this man and his life if you can find it. He was young and it was on film, french maybe. Well, let me tell you, The Witch Doctor literally marked him with goat blood to be the best drummer ever from birth, the chosen one who left his small village to make his mark on the world. the scene where he sees his father again for the first time after leaving is one of the most moving things I've ever seen. I am truly a fan of this man.
Rest in Power, Mamady! Thank you to whomever posted this video, I believe I have been to this place before when I visited Matoto (in Conakry) in 2001 -- this video made all sorts of reminiscence wash over me. I was lucky & blessed to have that opportunity.
I'm a drummer. I hardly cry when anyone dies, but I shed some tears when Mamady passed... I swear his rhythm even came through to me when I was soloing. Rest in power, indeed! I love you!
Having listened to every kind of drum solo ever recorded I choose this as the best drum solo ever recorded. Rest in Peace Mamady Keita, greatest hand drummer of all time ...
I can tell you it isn’t the best drum solo ever recorded. ‘This isn’t the best kuku can be I imagine you haven’t heared it be played enough. You like it because it’s got a white man in the back but unfortunately that’s what makes it shit
KUKU - is a typical Manding rhythm for the demonstration of virtuosity in drum communication. Mamady is doing it brilliantly, he is a real master djembefola....
And he's a really sweet guy. Mamady Keita can improve one's djembe playing very quickly. I've attended a few workshops of his when he came to Victoria BC.
The level of concentration and clarity of mind, body and presence (and heart) to be able to play traditional african drumming is misunderstood by many. This is a serious spiritual healing art form and I am grateful to have been in the medicine of this music for 20 years! All cultures have medicine. The world is our healing temple.
Ya'll are getting to deep within this. Drumming is for both rituals, fun, and just something to do. It's not always as deep as you might think. I know this because I am a drummer. The captain of my team, and I know this rhythm and many more. It doesn't need hat much concentration, just timing. Yes, it is complex, but not that much. All you need is rhythm, the ability to keep timing, and to play with both hands, when it comes to dundun, songba, and kinkeni.
Wisstihrwas As I said, even your mind doesn't need to go that deep within it. It's just rhythm and using your hands/arms. It's the same as any band today, just using different instruments and rhythms.
Foolish person that I am. I grew up without ever hearing rhythms like this! Oh what western people miss by not experiencing the tempos and rhythms of such powerful instruments.
Maybe "some" Western folk miss out, but by no means all. Black neighborhoods all over the States hear this from guys getting together on street corners, or in parks in the summer, to beat the drums.
I miss his drumming and blazing fast hands and sun bright smile. I wish I could have had the chance to meet him before he passed away from this life. I will always carry his spirit and soul in me constantly. My condolences to every relative and in-law an to his daughter. Now you have a guardian angel in spirit. May his teachings live forever through those who had the chance to learn from him in person.blessed is those who have faith in the higher power of the holy creator and know that nothing is done in vein. God has a reason for what he says and does. Thank you Lord for our Grandmaster Djembefola Mamady Keita and his teachings legacy and lineage. An icon reborn into the spirit.
The 'backing' rhythm is so on the money....big respect to all these guys...Mamady is like some sort of descended spirit....for some reason I wanted to call, him Mamadou...no Idea why.
He makes it seem easy, but drumming that skilled takes so much practice. You just can't emulate it, you have to truly understand the djembe to play like that.
It's not about how much skills you have. It's about going deep into your rythms and have a total awareness off your mind and body. And trust me it's not as simple as it seem to be, that take years and years of practice
it is if you have the right teacher. you could learn really quick in africa, because they teach by using phonetics, ie singing the sounds, then you end up wiring your hand movements to the music you make in your head with drum language, kra ka ta ta , ka kra ka ta ta, kra ka ta ta ta ka. you don't think much about your hands at all when you have enough practice.
I had a Kenyan American drum teacher in church and this was the first song I learned, it was one of my favorites! utukufu kwa ngoma, utukufu kwa muziki!
Aaaahhhh....finally....a version of Kuku with intricate stylings without the showboat play-as-fast-and-as-loud-as-you-can stuff. I played Guinea drumming for a few years (I mostly do Ghanaian drumming), this was INCREDIBLY helpful to remind myself of the real Kuku, and get some ideas on how to groove on this totally sweet dundun groove. Thanks so much for posting this!
Mamady , i took lessons from him long time ago in brussels, special man thisone , watch the movie about him , verry interresting! He did verry good work spreading the djembe music worldwide , everywhere he was playing and teaching , now he's getting older , dont know if he still plays
I don't think I made myself clear. I count myself some sort of fool..not to have been FORTUNATE enough to have had this wonderful music around me as I was growing up. And now to have it..well, better late than never, right??

Almost 3 months ago I had a heart attack and had to have a stent put in my heart. I told my cardiac rehab nurse about this video and how I found videos of a African dance instructor from Zimbabwe and paired her videos with the music of Mamady's videos. I dance to this music every day. Thank you Mamady for all that you are doing.
Rest In Peace inshallah my brother you have truly inspired many of use worldwide and we all have been and will continue to be blessed by your positive guidance and spirt 🙏🏽
A perfect combination of the conversation among the drummers. Really good without being unreachable. The rhythms can be understood with clarity. I love it. The bass drum rhythmic backdrop is often missing from most drumming that is playing the djembe drum but missing the bass drums and bells that provide that groove to support the djembe. Where are all you bass drums groovey folks.
When he plays totally off rhythm it is so masterfully done that it evokes in my mind some sort of spirit being that has total dominion over the realm it finds iteslf in...it can dance and manipulate the arena to its heart's content....the true sign of a master...

Music is so beautiful , and the african people got that rhiythm embedded in their souls , everybody got rithm though , just dare to try and discover , rhythm = life
Ive listened to this maybe 20 times, and I keep coming back to it. I love playing along. Mamady was amazing, God rest his soul.
I love being African. We have lots of rich traditions with true beautiful music. Great connection with our ancestors, motherland, and the universe.

😊
心よりお悔やみ申し上げます。

Correct, that's the house in Matoto. 😊
When did he pass away?
não sabia que ele tinha falecido, que descanse em paz

I swear his rhythm even came through to me when I was soloing.
Rest in power, indeed! I love you!
The REAL west African stuff. The actual rhythm kuku, with all parts. Mamady is a living legend. He proves it every time he plays.
I was there!! Best memories and experiences of my life. Gratitude Mamady!

I agree, there are many complexities to african drumming, not to mention good spirits, and strong hands lol!
is echt so

Desde pequeño dije que para mi el Tambor como se dice en mi país es el mejor instrumento y viendo a este Rey lo confirmé
Rest in power, rest in peace. Thank you for the music and the joy.
J adore from a pakistani peace and love upon africa
Foolish person that I am. I grew up without ever hearing rhythms like this! Oh what western people miss by not experiencing the tempos and rhythms of such powerful instruments.
Really? The rhythms and tempo are due to the power of the INSTRUMENTS? *shaking my head*
Maybe "some" Western folk miss out, but by no means all. Black neighborhoods all over the States hear this from guys getting together on street corners, or in parks in the summer, to beat the drums.
What in the world are you talking about? Everything from the Blues to Rock and Roll have roots in this kind of music. 🙄
Our black American folks n our African brothers in Europe use such African drum beats FUSE ODG hehe is one of them
Shalom Njenga lol yep
With that rhythm the whole group moves in UNITY , something we still have NOT achieved
You are absolutely right. But, Let's try to find that something and bring it to the rythm.

Le gars en débardeur blanc que 😂 un vrai régal 😂😂
D'où que tu sois à ce jour, tu nous émerveille toujours avec le son de ton djembé que personne n'a jamais su égalé !!!
He makes it seem easy, but drumming that skilled takes so much practice. You just can't emulate it, you have to truly understand the djembe to play like that.
Not really. I play the djembe, and it's easy. You just have to be intune with rhythm.
It's not about how much skills you have. It's about going deep into your rythms and have a total awareness off your mind and body. And trust me it's not as simple as it seem to be, that take years and years of practice
Zaouli Dancer No, I understand that, I've been drumming for 11 years, I'm just saying that y'all are being too serious about it.
It's not for being serious, just when you say it's easy to really play traditional djembe i don't agree ;)
it is if you have the right teacher. you could learn really quick in africa, because they teach by using phonetics, ie singing the sounds, then you end up wiring your hand movements to the music you make in your head with drum language, kra ka ta ta , ka kra ka ta ta, kra ka ta ta ta ka. you don't think much about your hands at all when you have enough practice.
