It's a shame Pontiac never built a heavier production block with a robust lifter galley, thicker main webs, and thicker cylinders. Twenty more pounds of iron would have made a big difference.

Makes me wonder 🤔 how far off ALL the blocks were way back in the '80's that I was just trying to improve how they ran. Valve job, cam and lifters and timing sets.😊 Happy New Year everyone 🎉

I suppose machining at the foundry improved over the years, or perhaps the 1970 350 block in my Firebird was a bit more fortunate, but on my stroker rebuild with a 4.25" crank, the decks were only .003 out corner to corner. The bigger issue encountered was with the 6X-4 heads I used. The spring seat heights were very inconsistent and all had to be milled down to get the installed pressures correct. I went with a Comp Cams XE276HR cam, their 1.5 roller rockers, and valve springs, and used Johnson roller lifters. The engine makes 442 Lb Ft @ 4300RPM and 453HP @ 5600RPM. Always nice to see the Pontiacs staying alive.

Daniel, I've seen the same on small blocks, 0.012 out from front to back. Some get 0.004 - 0.005 side to side. It's hard to decide what to take on first deck when you don't check both before you start. But, it's just a little more time !!

I hope you get caught up and decide to keep doing engines in the future. I have a 5.7L roller cam short block out of a ‘94 Roadmaster that was a warranty pull out for a cold start knock which is most likely a main bearing. I have had it for 30 years and I bought a new set of Vortec heads 20 years ago, still in the box. I would love to get you to do it! I live in Arkansas close to the GPI operation but I like your work ethic! I worked in automotive machining back in the 70’s and 80’s and love the work but couldn’t make any money, so I went to work at a factory and made oilfield parts for 32 years. Stay true Buddy!

The 94 roadmaster is a Gen2 LT1 engine. If you look at it, it shouldn't have a distributor on the intake but the spider of ignition leads go.underneath the water pump. The heads on them are probably iron and actually flow better than vortec castings afaik.

The wonky mains may have been caused by a flexible driveline whipping around on the end of the crank for its life. Pontiac put every screwy idea they could think up into those cars.
Using 5.3LS pistons you’ll have a tough time finding 7”+ Pontiac rods with a wrist pin for the LS pistons. They make a very expensive BBC rod that long but it’s.004” too narrow and .050” too small on the big end.
