    I have had several different varieties of asterina stars and I can say 100% I had some that ate my zoas. They would wrap themselves around the polyps and when I would peel them off the zoanthids guts would come with it. They were a very dark grey color on top and white underneath. The normal white or sandy colored ones i have never had an issue with.

    I recently discovered a snail i bought from my LFS had one asterina star on it. I thought it was pretty cool, it hasn't harmed any of my corals....so far...I did see it near my zoas but it left them alone.

    I've had these in my tank for about 3 years now. I just remove them whenever I can manually if I see them close to the rim of the tank. So far I haven't seen them eat any corals but I i also noticed I barely have any coralline algae. Could be a good or bad thing depending on who you ask. I thought about adding a harlequin shrimp because they look cool but I'm worried my flame hawkfish or bully six line wrasse might go after it.

      Damnn that’s a lot for a harlequin shrimp 😲 wonder how the price has changed since you commented this. Here in the states I can get one for about $40 USD

    • @awsome2ish
      @awsome2ish 2 года назад +3

      @@gregori1o They're still the same. They cost a lot because Australia can't import anything else from other countries. Otherwise people could introduce pests to the barrier reef if they wanted to. Only a few have been found in Australian waters. Things that have high demand and low supply cost a lot.

    • @gregori1o
      @gregori1o 2 года назад +1

      @@awsome2ish Damn bro that’s crazy. But I understand, and those laws make sense. The Great Barrier Reef must be protected. I’m sure there’s a lot of species in the hobby over there that I’m sure I wouldn’t be able to get here or may cost an arm and a leg. I’m a beginner reefer myself. Going on about 8 months with my first 15g reef tank. And even though I have a local fish store that has a harlequin shrimp for $40. It would probably die in my tank since & recently I’ve only seen a couple asterina starfish pop up! I think they’re kinda cool but hope the starfish don’t become a nuisance. I have a sexy shrimp instead 😃 very cool shrimp indeed 👍🏼

    Going on 7/8 years with them in my nano and have never experienced them eating my corals. I was recently at a LFS where they were actually selling Asterina starfish at 25$ a pop. I had to triple take and rub my eyes. I thought I was seeing things. I began to wonder if the debate of good/bad was still raging on as 25$ a Asterina seemed wild to me.
    It seems the debate still rages on 😂
    PS I know there’s 15 or more varieties of Asterina, but for the record. Mine look very similar to the ones you’re showing in the video. Again, I’ve never experienced any issues.

    I've had reef tanks for years, i currently have hundreds of these little dudes, and have in each tank I've kept over they years they have been there... they love algae and cover the glass when you dont clean it for a few days... in terms of corals mine have always done well and these stars have never hurt anything in my tank, they just breed a lot and come out at night on the glass and first thing in the morning, with the odd ones staying on the glass in the day...harmless

    These destroyed my tank after 5 years. There where more then 10 thousand. It just destroyed my bio balance every so often. Which in turn stressed the coral. Then they ate it. Which Added more starfish because they ate. Wich upset my biobalance. Wich stressed the corals and then they ate some more....
    Also they ate the pink and purple alges
    Left me.with a bare white rock tank.

      @@waffleman3437 listen to him again around 2:30 mark. He contradicts his in my experience and give a basic guarantee. He say 100% reef safe and you should leave them in your tank. He even implies that they are good for your tank. This would invite and convince a new reefer to actually add them on purpose. Say if they see them on a plug or something. These are just dangerous statements. As you stated and I know as well there are different types/species of these stars and it been said the darker ones are the baddies. He should have said that in his experience he’s not had an issue but there are several reports of some species eating corals. Then say that if you do have them to keep a close eye on them. I’m not hating but with his experience and knowledge he needs to remember that people will look to him for advice and follow it to a T. I hope you understand.

    The thing is though, for me they didn't eat every type of zoa, meaning they only go for select ones..and this only happened to my zoas, no other corals.
