      -7c is still very cold if the grill is a loose design with a lot of airflow.
      Also, don't dump on test lights. Test loading a circuit is critical. Even better than that is voltage drop testing on a running vehicle. But don't dump on test lights.

      It’s easy to estimate very close torque.
      If your wrench is a foot long you simply need a scale or even to know your own weight.
      That’s simple math.

      If ya have problem with a drain plug gasket sealing.
      Tighten it like normal.
      Tap it with a light hammer or rachet
      Then tighten it again.
      Same trick on brake line washers

    100% it's always the engine. Replace the engine(all electronics and sensors too) and you'll be OK. Don't forget to add fuel.

      That's what I do: at the first sign of trouble I just replace the entire powerplant. Solves the problem every time!

    There’s loads of videos of people testing their abilities to torque up fasteners & get close to a specific torque just by “feel” & they’re usually wildly inaccurate. Human feel is no substitute for a torque wrench.
    Also, before the first torque wrench was invented they would use some form of spring measure on a bar of a specific length.

      A spring balance on a bar 1 foot long will give foot pounds by pulling on the balance. Most development on the internal combustion engine was done in the early years of aviation. They had to get an engine to hang together till they landed as it is very hard to fix a problem in mid flight. They also learnt all the tricks to get more power such as hot cams, water injection etc. The correct torquing of bolts was probably realised then too.

    What you don’t have a crystal ball? I am a mechanic in the marine industry and I have a lot of people ask questions just like that. My response is my crystal ball is a little foggy today.

    Running a plow truck in Northern Alberta we would consider -7 f as an average winter day. We ran in weather as cold as -30. We wouldn’t run in weather colder than that as you just break shit because steel becomes very brittle at those temperatures.

      Same here, in central British Columbia. Minus 7C is nothing. Minus 25C is starting to get challenging. Gearboxes and differentials really don't like it.

    UK is still in Miles. I'm a electrical engineer, I use 2 yearly calibrated tourqe wrenches. As for PTFE, great way to destroy stuff, the amount of times I find liquid control valve failures, its always down to ptfe getting into the fluid. Glad I'm not the only one that has to deal with ID-10T failures.

    Crank no start, call mechanic ask him what to do. Starting fluid is a very last resort in my eyes, too much can do serious damage. Was always told use either once you’ll use every time after that. Besides it’s best to have it diagnosed by a good mechanic it could something totally silly like an o ring on your fuel separator. I guess the guy in the box truck decided you wanted too much information. Maybe he just decided to take it to a shop and get it fixed. Always good information in your videos

    For over 30 years my dad has said, if your check engine light is on, it’s a bad O2 sensor. If you always guess the same thing eventually you’ll be correct. Now it’s a joke between me and my friend. Funny Video, Thanks.

    Another issue with Teflon tape on a drain pan plug is if the tape gets into oil pan it could potentially cause blockage in oil pickup tube screen or worse get into oil passages.

    Never rebuilt an engine, but this one really made me irritated. 3L EcoDiesel in a 2015 Ram 1500, had to do a water pump on it due to it leaking. Serpentine belt was also split in half all the way around. So got the water pump replaced and installed a new belt. Topped off the coolant and started the engine. Let it run to get up to operating temp. Went to wash my hands off and came back 5 minutes later and found it pouring engine oil on the floor, pressurized mind you. Had a senior technician look at it and he told me to take the intake manifold off. So did that, no damage to anything there and the oil inlet for the turbocharger wasn't damaged. So he took a dial indicator and his pry bar and checked the play in the crank at the Harmonic balancer...way over specification, and I'm not exaggerating when I say it was about 10 times out of specification. Since we didn't want to drop the oil pan, best guess we came up with wad that the thrust bearing in the crank was very worn out (vehicle had over 135k miles on it). So with a new belt installed and a out of spec thrust bearing, it wallard out the rear main seal and caused an oil leak. Not something you can always expect.

    There were also internal combustion engines before the dynamometer was invented as well...! Experience is what we call lessons learned the hard way... That's why it's important to listen to your elders/ experts, they've been there and done made that mistake already...! Gotta love the intelligence of the general public... they can be amusing...!!!     A great guy and great mechanic. Please!!!!! answer his questions with detail. He takes his time trying to help you and you give a one word replies. Luv your channel a sign of a good mech is that he knows that he doesn't know everything and is always learning. LOL I always use orange rtv and Teflon and JB weld on my drain plugs they never leak 5 out of 4 times. I always torque bolts by turning them until they pop or click than 1 more full rotation. 60% of the time it works every time. PS If you make shirts with a 5 out 4 times saying on it "I" would buy that :)

    Teflon isn't a sealant. It is a lubricant to help lessen the friction of the pipe as it tightens down on the taper. The taper is what seals the pipe.

    Love your videos man! I learn a lot from them. Torque wrenches were probably not that important back in the day because the clearances were not as tight as today's engines hence the oil thicknesses from them to what is used today.

    I do like using my incandescent test lights to make sure power and ground exists or if a light is actually getting power as needed. If the incandescent bulb is illuminated but not enough to be as bright as it needs to be, then that's when I pull out the digital multi-meter and start looking. I try to start simple before I start jumping into the rabbit holes.

      Actually you can have a circuit that carries full voltage just fine, but it may not be able to carry current. A volt meter can't tell you that, but a test light with a current draw similar to the circuits design load will tell you.
      Often with poor connections you can measure full system voltage yet not be able to light a 2 amp test light and if you connect a volt meter inline it will measure 0 volts with the load.

    Hey Josh, big respect to you for dealing with these people! I don't think I would have the patience to do what you are doing. Not everyone has that tech knowledge, however if you don't even know nor care enough to know what engine your truck runs you should go to a workshop hand the keys over and let the mechanic do his thing!

    Regarding the first email and the -7 temp, we had diesel Chevy maintenance vans in Alaska and ran them at temps below zero for months, sometimes down to -40 to -50. They didn't sit much, the flightline maintenance kept them moving. The only real issue we had was no heat. They never warmed up. The motor pool was adamant about not covering the grill, calling it vehicle abuse. So we drove around towing a diesel heater behind the truck with the heater hose shoved in the back door. My torque wrench experience was both calibrating them and using them on aircraft maintenance. The big problem was people over torqued if they didn't use a torque wrench.

      So many don’t realize using a torque wrench is about making sure it isn’t over torqued too. Seen way to many run lug nuts on with an impact, then use the torque wrench only to make sure they aren’t loose with no cares about how tight they actually are.

    Back in the day before torque wrenches were common and engines were low compression lower revving, they were considered high mileage at 30 thousand miles .
    Also fatigue will cause a difference in how tight something feels.

    I've known an "injector" guy, black-smoking engine and it was the final air filter element installed backwards sealing off the intake. I had an engine that only started with ether, the #3 line headed for the nozzle was spraying a fast-pulsing stream of fuel out into oblivion out of a pinhole, perhaps they shouldn't be started if you find the side of the block caked in dirt and fuel.

    For the thermostat question, I’ve seen both temperatures used, actually use them myself. The thermostat temp is set in degrees Fahrenheit, so there is not much of a point changing them, since they make sense in relation to each other, and the manufacturer. However outside and inside temperatures are measured in Celsius.
    With the C4, I was in a cube truck that was geared so low, that 55 was about all it could do, hit engine governor at 65.
    Then again, this person’s truck could be a yard mule.

    I am you sure you know! But for some people who don’t pipe threads are tapered the more you tighten the larger the diameter to make the seal ! Machine threads are the same diameter for the length! Teflon on the drain plug? Only makes makeshift gasket! Enjoy your video’s & humor. Cape Cod John

    I know a guy who can tell you about the current weather conditions are by sticking his head out of the door. Uncanny and remarkably accurate. The same guy can tell you whether it's daylight or dark using the same methodology. Experience, magic, divine gift???? There are forces at work in this world that most of us will never know of.

    I have found as an owner operator for 26 years there’s a lot of steering wheel holders who buy a truck and end up way over their head. Thats the case with those comments you read.

    Darn none of my question made it. Will have to do better.
    Pulled the head off a 3406B, and on this repair. Someone put the Cat red glue on the cylinder block. Then they put the spacer plate gasket on. So then they put red glue on top of the spacer plate gasket and put the spacer plate on. As you can guess they put red glue on top of the spacer plate and put the head gasket on. Finally they put red glue on top of the head gasket and put the head on.
    So when I lifted the head off, stalactites was from the head to the top of the engine in several places. If I recall the head gasket was blown, but I never found out the reason for the failure.
    My boss told me he had a truck driver who came in complaining about green smoke out his exhaust pipe, years ago.
    He told him to stop taking green pills.

    Robot Cantina literally just posted today a video in which he discovered that the thermostat for his little 3cyl Kubota engine would start opening at 160F and would go wide open at about 185F. Its fairly common for the assemblies to stop fighting flow at about 155F so running 160F is normal operation without a special valve. This is why the older systems had a second loop-back thermostat that allowed re-flow until the temp actually got higher then they'd force the flow to the radiator.
    The guys in India can tell what 75flbs _sounds_ like tho...

    I once put teflon tape on my oil drain plug thinking i was smart. I then double checked online forums because often times my bright ideas can be pretty dull. After 2 minutes of research I decided it was a stupid idea so I cracked the drain plug to remove the tape and it had completely dissolved. Remnants of it were stuck in the threads after only 3 minutes of sitting there. I cleaned off the threads on the oil pan and thank god I didn’t use it. Im sure it could have contaminated my oil and done more harm than good.

    Teflon tape: great for wrapping around brake pushrods to measure travel distance.
    Cold: I have people constantly ask me what the winter front is for and what it does.
    Torque: people obviously don’t understand bolt stretch and the consequences of stripped aluminum.
    My Question: how do you feel about gauges? What happened to gauges inside of trucks! My truck is 30 years old and has 22 gauges that each tell a different story and are all related to each other Ammeter running high, something’s draining the battery. Pyrometer high, too much fuel. Volt Meter, oil temp, water temp, ALL indicators of something wrong “BEFORE” $#?! Hits the fan. Where are the gauges and people that know how to read them?!
    BTW, my old W900 with a 3406B has to have a winter front for the oil temp to run 150 degrees. Without it, the engine runs way too cold. Love to see you mention a tray of coal under the oil pan before a cold start as well as a gasoline soaked rag instead of starting fluid.

    -7 Fahrenheit (about -22 Celsius) is a pretty normal winter temperature in much of Canada. Whenever people ask how cold it gets here I just tell them -40, which is both true and easy for Americans to understand.

    Yes I would much rather use a light bulb and 2 wires rather than a meter. I’ve been burnt too many times by high resistance wires. Remember there are only 4 things that can happen to wire. Short to power,short to ground,high resistance (corrosion),open circuit. If something else can happen to a wire please let me know. 25 years of working on Fords and I learn everyday. How the wire got to that state is a different story. And I do love your vid’s the dozer with the valve bridge issue was great. Shows you really care about what goes out the door! And yes a meter does have its place in diag.

      You've been doing this for 25 years and don't trust a DVOM? A DVOM if used properly is safe, accurate, and should be in the main arsenal of electrical diagnostics.

      About as useful as an electric motor in Canada. I’ve always wondered how Tesla’s run in Canada in the cold. I couldn’t even imagine an electric Peterbilt in Canada on a “cold” day.

    Josh, I have emailed you before, and you always answered me questions. The only email was the video on the new electric truck being produced. You did do a video after finding out that it was a new video. I totally respect what you're doing to help. You seem very frustrated with people in this video. Remember, it is what it is, Josh. I just wish you were a cummins mechanic to help me out, but it is what it is. Thanks for your help.

    Re torque wrenches, before spring types, a spring balance was used, also many early engines were given a guide to weight to pull on a specific length of spanner/bar.
    The old firm of Gardner used special tools, short handle for injector clamps, set length bar for block/crankcase studs, etc.
    Getting into military stuff, the handbooks would tell you how many men you need to lift a gearbox, 😅, but in marine engines they tell you ‘ use flogging spanner of X length and a 3 pound hammer, or 5 pound hammer for how tight you need.

    Please tell freightliner this about their compression fitting going into the dryer. I actually broke a $1000 air dryer because they put some kind of sealant or lock tight on the compression fitting going into the dryer. It snapped the intake port off of the dry, and they charged $1000 to replace it at the dealer. This being a brand new truck that had around 10-15k miles on it, I doubt anyone had it apart before then.

    Josh, It's amazing that some folks are able to live their live knowing what they believe to be true. I have apartments and I don't know how many times I've seen teflon tape on rubber gasketed fittings. I enjoy these type of videos once in a while. Keep the good stuff coming.

    Here, in the Yukon, Canada (Neighbour to Alaska) we sometimes get colder temps than -40 (Celsius, and Fahrenheit are equal at this -40) but I do not run my van below -25..
    Yes, it is cold up here.. and mechanics are hard to get by, especially for diesels.

    at @9:05 this man has never had to diagnose anything properly in his life, he's the type that'll never find any fault with a low compression engine, leaking fuel return valve/rail pressure sensor, faulty IMV, weak fuel pump, clogged fuel filters or anything at that... they just dont exist.
    also that harry one im pretty damn sure its a bot just babling whatever, also love you rocking that edison cap josh, it looks nice for a change!

    RE. The teflon tape, I bought a used pickup, my oil drain plug was leaving, someone had rolled teflon tape into an "o" ring shape around the drain plug head and tightened it. they also stipped the pan trying to tighten it.

    If the first driver is canadian he probably is talking about centigrade. We use a mix of metric and imperial in our day to day. Truck mechanics here most often talk about vehicle temperature using fahrenheit, becuase thats whats in the manuals and on the gauges of vehicle made in North America. When talking about the temp outside we pretty much exclusively use centigrade.

    I know that i had a 34cat one time and every time i shifted into 5 gear my right nut would itch. I checked all the fuses and they were all good. never could find the problem. Ive sold the truck and got another one and never had that problem again.

    I am a auto shop owner. I do a lot of electrical dust and fix cars that my local dealerships can't. I have 3 different light bulbs with wires hanging off then that I use for loaded circuit testing. Normally I can tell just by brightness if resistance is in the circuit. Otherwise I use a multimeter in conjunction with the light to test voltage drop. Just used one Friday to test fuel pump circuit. Light goes in place of fuel pump. Turn it on with scan tool and if it lights pump is bad. Any machine that is operated wrong enough it can be a smoke machine
