    Great goalmouth scramble at the end ! Happy days they were. Shortly before Nev turned his ankle and the season turned way from us. One title that we should have strolled home.

    The injuries we had that season was horrendous. Mountfield, Stevens, Sheedy, Bracewell, Reid and then the worst of all, the best goalkeeper in the world. We were lucky the season before with only Inchy being injured. Fully fit team then the title would have been over in April.

    What a wonderful advert for the English game before TV got control over kick off times and match days on a Sunday or Monday that has diminished the atmospheres of Saturday afternoon and mid week that was once the norm.
    I always rated Alan Harper, a reliable all round talent who played a big role in the glory years, 1984-87.
    Alan could play full back, centre back, and right midfield with ease.
    Perhaps Howard Kendall's only misjudgement in this period, was not bringing Alan on as his only substitute in the 1985 FA Cup final against Man Utd. Late in the second half, Andy Gray, who had been magnificent that season, could barely run down the right wing after a through ball. I was seated nearby. United were down to ten men, and bringing Alan on to allow Trevor Steven to move inside with Graeme Sharp could have changed the outcome. As it had done in previous games that season. Telford in the FA Cup was one example. 3 quick goals came along to win the tie.
    United stretched Everton wide with their wingers. Alan would have had the pace to nullify Olsen or Strachan.
    Howard, when asked about not changing a team that had played in a European Final three days earlier, said he didn't want to upset the team that had nearly won a treble.

  • @thelstanedwardsson4374

    We started this season with some very impressive wins with only a marginal loss to Everton in early September... Tottenham were good enough (player wise) to have finished in the Top 6. Too many changes in line-ups throughout the season. Not helped by the injury to Clive Allen and Roberts missing a few games. Shouldn't have let Hazard and Roberts go.

      No. I was lucky. I generally watched games at Goodison from the stands so it was only at big games away that I was on the terraces. But at numerous grounds it was uncomfortable at times. Hillsborough - never again.

    Who played defence for Everton when Ratcliffe was out?
    Only 3 at the back ? (Harper, Pointon, Van den Hauwe)

    • @antonioandolini8771
      @antonioandolini8771 2 года назад +1

      Started the game with a back four Alan Harper Ratcliffe Van Den Hauwe Pointon. Ratcliffe went of injured. Heath came on as substitute. Kevin Richardson went right back and Harper went sweeper alongside Van Den Hauwe. Harper was awesome that night. Kendal said he played like Beckenbauer. That was the 5th rnd. Had to go to Luton 3 days later for the quarter final. Getting beat 2 nil and come back to force a replay which we won. Had some character in that side from 84-87. Southall getting injured cost us the double and 3 league titles on the bounce.

    • @garethfieldstead7547
      @garethfieldstead7547 2 года назад

      @@antonioandolini8771 too true! Just look at the players that were unavailable that night. Gary Steven's, Mountfield, Ratcliffe injured, Sheedy, Reid and Bracewell carrying injuries. Spurs were a good side then. I always said injuries robbed us of the double. Liverpool had Grob the drop, Beglin, Whelan, McDonald, Molby, Johnston, yes of course you would have beaten a fully fit Everton side.🤣🤣🤣
