the day this was released, I asked my good friend at school if he would come watch it with me. Logan, R.I.P. Neither of us had taken any hallucinogens or psychedelics at that point.. but we somehow knew.. man I will always remember that night. Thank you AnCo for a lifetime of memories.
I remember buying the DVD when this came out. I watched it in my house with an important person. That person is not dead now, but she might as well be... along with who I was then, so I know the feeling you're trying to convey.
one of the things that I love about panda and avey, besides the sheer creativity, is the effortlessness of it. it's like the concept of "tao." they're definitely tapping into some sort of flow. nothing ever sounds forced. weird? hell yes...and i love it. no band sonically does anything remotely like this...this good. i just love how unpretentious, un-thought-out, and so very in the moment their melodies and rhythms are. now to go listen to panda's song 'boneless' which is perfect, of course.
If I could take my eyes away, might not get so dry now If I could keep my hands away, might not feel so dried out And when I would feel I'd know that it is real I'd like to stay with natural things, organic as my skin that peels And not so often enter in outer-space that I can never touch Back-lit and bite, fields in a mine, to turn it off, and to make sure I keep it real with myself and never let obsessions with connections to an outside source Be crippling my abilities to breathe and take a step out from my usual places Just to make sure I keep it real with my own and never let a tendency to tread in water with no target Cripple my abilities to deal with things that scream 'be careful' Seeing screens with me behind it No one's between what I should and why am I seeing how to do it? Incredible song , i dont think any actual band delivers the intricate melodies that animal collective creates , they are in such a different level, its what perfect evolution for music is all the beattlesque beach boys and all the great music makers delivered at their time animal collective does in contemporary music , i love animal collective really this band should be the most important band of our time but i understand its sometimes too much for some people to become the iconic band that we all know they are
the part that says 'screens behind my eyes' makes me think of the thoughts and perceptions we have within ourselves that are inhibiting our potential too. not only are we surrounded by technological screens, but we're lost in the screens of our own thought and the narrow conceptions of life we have projected there
When AnCo writes a song about drugs (which happens incredibly rarely), it's obvious. The last track from Centipede Hz, for example, Amanita. This song is very obviously about the internet. "I'd like to stay with natural things, organic as my skin that feels, and not so often enter in another space that I can never touch - backlit.... "I keep it real with myself and never let connections to an outside source be crippling my ability to breathe." As someone who just deleted Facebook, I definitely identify with this song. Of course, I am sitting here writing comments on RUclips. So there's that.
yeah definitely, that line, to me means that the screen mentality has invaded his very thoughts, to the point where he is subconsciously viewing life as if it where on tv or the internet. Like everytime he does something he, against his will almost, thinks about it in terms of how it will look on screen. I think most people do this to some extent, like considering how their life will appear to others on facebook etc I can imagine when you have entered the public eye this is magnified many times.
If I could take my eyes away it might not get so dark out If I could keep my hands out it might not feel so dry out And when I would feel I'd know that it was real I'd like to stay with natural things organic as my skin that peels And not so often enter in to outer space that I can never Touch backlit and bite Fields in a mine to turn it off and to make sure I keep it real with myself and never let obsessions with connections to an outside source Be crippling my abilities to breath and take a step out from my usual places Just to make sure I keep it real with my own and never let a tendency to tread in water with no target Cripple my abilities to do the thing that needs be done Why am I seeing screens? I feel a screen I think I'm lost in so many screens that I am seeing screens appear behind my eyes But I feel a screen what am I lost in so many screens that I am seeing screens appear behind my eyes Why am I seeing screens? Why am I before screens?
Nothing is more annoying than high-and-mighty drug talk on an Animal Collective video. 1) Not ALL of AnCo's music is about drugs. Those who only feel a "drug vibe" and nothing more, I'm sorry to hear that. They're music isn't simply the sonic equivalent of a crack rock. 2) To those who bash drug use and talk about the members of AnCo like they're fundamentalist Mormons...you're annoying too. Some drugs are very positive...especially for creativity. Altering your consciousness is not immoral.
Times are changing. It won’t always be this way. Most of us can look back at our ancestors and go “wtf were they thinking? Ban alcohol?” I can say pretty confidently that in the future (because it’s happening even now), drugs will be understood and humanity’s future grandchildren will look back and go.. “wtf were they thinking? Ban drugs?”
@@sopwith2721 Totally agree. It's interesting to ponder what's normal and accepted now...that will be thought heinous in 50 years. I'd argue the entire concept of incarceration will be on that list. The fact we think it's necessary or inevitable is merely due to a lack of insight and better solutions...which WILL come, in time. As for drugs, yes...that's a taboo waning with each passing year. Have u read the book "Drug Use for Grown Ups" by Dr Carl Hart? It's all about breaking that taboo.... it's so good.
@nauseousqueasy I'd venture to say that you're both wrong. The song is pretty obviously a lamentation of the prevalence of technology in our lives. The "outer space i can never touch" is the internet, which "cripples my abilities to breathe and take a step out from my usual places" because we tend to filter our internet experience to our own interests and beliefs. As for the song being anti-materialistic, I'd argue the opposite. The lyrics definitely favor the tangible over the virtual.
So beautiful and perfect, I try not to listen to this on RUclips so that it remains a rare treat when I watch ODDSAC... just sneakily turned up on my playlist and made my day :-)
speaking of...screens....i just opened up 2 browser windows, each with this video. then i hit play on each a bit off synch, but on beat, so it gave a roundabout type of effect. works super well with this song...and many other AC songs. SO many more subtle harmonies are generated that way. it's intoxicating to listen to
It's about how we're all in our screens, right now, see, I'm in my screen typing this and I know what he means to feel frail when I'm lost in so many screens and I hardly know of the natural things
It doesn't really need to be said. People who create do it because it gives them a feeling that is unmatched by anything. And people who really push the boundaries of their craft are having mind expanding experiences.
This is the truth right here. If you search around on the old AC forum you can find some background information on the members. I remember reading that Avery started dropping acid when he was fourteen, and I'm pretty sure he was with the other members of the band at the time. But I know that they've since slowed down with the psychedelics and even claim to be completely clean of them. On Centipede Hz they have a song called Amanita, which is one of the "sacred mushrooms".
@TheTrackstatus this is so true. Everyone asks me how I can listen to it, it's just a bunch of noise, and I tell them it's creative and if you actually take the time to listen to some of their stuff you'll find a band that's like no other.
@lmfviolet78 haha...excellent. I actually started doing that with my own songs as a way to inspire creative ideas. Or I'll take two of my songs and mash them together, ala Girl Talk, and see how it sounds. Usually it's just muddy and incoherent....but every now and then a gem shines through and it sounds amazing. I now use this idea, mashing up my own songs, to write new stuff all the time. It leads you into really creative territory you never would have thought up on your own.
@nauseousqueasy Smile is one of the greatest works of music ever conceived, coming from a huge AC fan. i understand the comparison, their production is both immaculate.
I think it could go much deeper than just the "material world" I believe that it's just talking about illusions in general. We all face many illusions through our life, whether it's with material things or not. Just illusions in general. It's very easy to get distracted by something completely meaningless these days. And he's claiming that life is much simpler without this "Screened" or clouded vision.
@Dougolai I don't think so but I doubt you'd want to listen to it without the visual aspect. There are some amazing pieces of music on Oddsac but alot of it's soundscapes which were written to accompany the visuals. It kind of needs to taken as a whole in my opinion aside from a few tracks such as this, Mr Fingers, Tantrum Barb which work as stand alone pieces.
The music is the drug. Along with everything else people enjoy on a daily basis. There are ways to understanding how to release certain chemical in your brain to create heightened experiences. They trip off of their music. You see, they don't need drugs at this point. It's why they do what they do.
This is an odd but popular nitpick with humans. Look, there's a lot of bad shot that comes from the screen, but the same could be said about offscreen (nature in general) I've had more enjoyable experience on screen then off and I don't see that realistically as a bad thing. I don't see nature being any better than human nature and our nature to have technological advancements. I wish I was high right now
@nauseousqueasy I've heard Pet Sounds and it sounds nothing like Panda Bear. Besides, that album is ancient and does not count for Brian Wilson as an individual.
