  • 5 week old piglets (Ossabaw Island x Duroc) being weaned, trained to an electric fence, and rototilling our vegetable garden, all at once. They scuttled around in a stressed out little herd for the first day or so, but soon settled down to eating weeds and loosening up the soil for us.

Cute piglets! Funny I came across your video! Was researching how to use electric fencing, trying to keep squirrels out of our garden. God bless!

Haha! The break-out was hilarious! This is what happens when you do sloppy, inproper work on fencing! Cute piglets, though!

@anthony patterson I once had 4 rejected lambs that broke out because of sloppy fencing so I know what I'm talking about. I'm not a smartass, I am experienced. No videos, though. Btw, YOU have now proved yourself to be a smartass. Congrats.

I heard that this was around 10000 -20000 volts.

TheLapisMinecrafter The one on our farm is 18000. But an electric fence is about the farthest thing possible from a power line, or household current. Electric fences charge capacitors (in english, super fast batteries with very little storage) to their voltage, 10k to 20k, then discharge them in one 'burst'. That way, extremely limited amperage is available, so in principal it's similar to a static shock (from scrubbing socks on a carpet and touching a door handle, about 1,200v) and it won't cause permanent damage. Voltage alone doesn't dictate the lethality/danger of electricity. Lightning is millions of volts, and people have survived that. But as low as 50V AC can kill you.
Note: there is an emerging technology called 'sureshock' that keeps the line powered all the time, but it just keeps the capacitors charged and doesn't discharge in bursts, only when something touches the fence. They are more effective, since the animal doesn't have to touch the fence at the same time as a burst, but are severely hindered by grass touching the line.

Pigs get a bad rap. If you feed them slop, they'll eat the slop. If you feed the clean hay, veggies etc. that's what they'll eat. Usually you see movies of pigs dirty, eating disgusting slop but that's what they were given to eat.
