"A learner with books on the table, a well-trained, highly-motivated, and well-paid teacher in front of them, teaching a curriculum carefully curated to their needs. At sa gitna nito, ang sentro ng ating pagsisikap, isang batang natututo," President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said as he affirmed his commitment and called for collective support for the Department of Education’s (DepEd) Agenda presented by Vice President and concurrent Education Secretary Sara Z. Duterte during the Basic Education Report (BER) 2024 at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila in Pasay City on January 25, 2024.
In a clear nod to his Administration's achievements, President Marcos Jr. praised the BER 2024 for its candidness and comprehensive approach. He conveyed his gratitude to Vice President Duterte for her leadership in managing the educational sector, particularly in addressing the challenges posed by the pandemic, curriculum retooling and systemic reforms.
"We are cognizant that VP Sara and the whole of DepEd family are pulling out all the stops for the betterment of our basic education by focusing on ensuring our teachers’ teaching quality, competency, and well-being; improving our learners’ capacities and nutrition; and building better and more facilities to aid both teaching and learning," he said.
A key focus of the President's speech was the introduction of a new K to 10 curriculum, which is currently in its pilot phase across various regions. This move aligns with the Administration's goal of decongesting the curriculum and emphasizing foundational skills.
The Chief Executive acknowledged the substantial investment in educational infrastructure, including a PhP11.7 billion allocation for various projects, emphasizing the need for more classrooms, laboratories and schools built to withstand natural disasters.
In a tech-forward approach, President Marcos Jr. expressed satisfaction with the DepEd's procurement of information and communications technology (ICT) equipment to expand wi-fi services in schools. He emphasized the importance of modernizing educational resources to meet future demands.
The Administration's commitment extends to inclusive education, with plans to provide for resources for students with special needs and non-traditional programs for diverse groups such as indigenous peoples (IPs) and Muslim children.
As the nation moves forward under President Marcos Jr.'s leadership, the commitment to a reformed and enhanced educational system remains a cornerstone of his Administration's agenda, paving the way for a brighter future for the Filipino youth.
The President's vision for a ‘Bagong Pilipinas’ includes a robust educational system that underpins a modern, vibrant and peaceful country.
"I thus call on everyone to join us in this daunting but extremely rewarding endeavor under a Bagong Pilipinas, marked by a MATATAG educational system that paves the way for a more empowered, secure and progressive future," the Chief Executive concluded in his speech.
