Rita Tinina also Known as Ntanina Yiapan, was a veteran Kenyan Journalist and a prominent news anchor. The celebrated journalist was the Output Producer, Broadcast Platforms at the Nation Media Group. Tinina worked at the Nation Media Group before joining KTN News in 2012 where she worked as a senior reporter before re turning to NTV in October 2023.The prominent journalist was reported dead on Sunday 17th March, 2024.
Tina died aged 46 years old and a mother of an eight-year-old daughter, Mia Malaik. She hails from the Maasai community and had an older sister, Helen Silau Njaga. The journalist graduated from the University of Nairobi with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Media Studies.
Tinina made a significant and meaningful contribution to the field of journalism. Rita is known for her professionalism coupled with her golden voice which made her a household name and endeared to many Kenyans. Tinina left the greatest impact on many including colleagues as she embodied simplicity, kindness, grace, humility to an extraordinary degree as well as impeccable organisation and unimpeachable integrity plus a rock-solid reliability.
The journalist was found dead inside her house at Brooklyn apartment in Kileleshwa, Nairobi, on Sunday, March 17, 2024. She was found unconscious on her bed inside her bedroom at her home in Kileleshwa . She was later confirmed dead by paramedics who visited her house in Kileleshwa. A report, which quoted the deceased's sister, indicated that until her death, Tinina was epileptic and had experienced a severe five-day-old fever.
The news of her untimely death on Sunday, 17th March 2024 shocked Kenyans and dozens of journalists flocked on social media to express their sadness over her demise.
Eulogising her as a 'Gentle Giant' Nation Media Group Editor-in-Chief Joe Agehyo and Colleagues in the Media industry described her as humble person. In spite of her impressive professional achievements and profile, Rita kept her feet firmly on the ground, and her life free of drama. She took every new task with greater enthusiasm. During her professional career, she mentored younger journalists with a gentle nudge and expressed her displeasure with a smile. She eschewed office politics and delivered on her tasks with purpose and dignity. Tinina is remembered as one of the journalists who covered the historic Kenyan cases at The Hague. Rita Tinina was a consummate professional who played by the rules but never lost a moment to enjoy what she did. In her moments as a co-host, Tinina added a splash of colour to every she co-hosted.
In conclusion, Rita Tinina’s story has been written. She bravely lived her life as she manoeuvred past life’s challenges, fame and professional obligation. She left an impact on many while building her legacy and carving her own path to success both in and outside the media industry. The Media fraternity, her family and loved ones in Kenya and the world at large bid her farewell as they mourn her untimely death.
