    I will soon be 70 years old and I have been growing vegetables my whole life with my family and I've never grown asparagus. And I've been thinking about this a lot and wanting to do it. I would love a video about how to start

      Asparagus is a perennial. You plant it once and you have asparagus for almost a lifetime. It typically grows back year after year for about 20 years. It's smart to grow your own. It can be pricy in the store, of course.

      Can someone please share his/her knowledge with me about growing asparagus from seeds. I was told that it only grows from bulbs, so I am a bit confused. Thanks.

    When you mentioned noticing seed heads, you were holding a spear. The seeds don't come from the spear tips, the seeds come from female asparagus plants. They grow small seed pods on the fern part of the female plants. The male plants have flowers too, and sometimes have the berries or seed pods, but not often. Most people only grow the male plants because they have larger spears because they spend less energy on producing seeds. The male flowers have orange/yellow inside and the female plants have flowers with green inside. That green turns into the seed pod that will turn red as they ripen.

    So you're supposed to cut it in spring? I didn't know that! Would love an in depth asparagus video.

  • @marschlosser4540

    We always stripped berries from stalks because plants will spend all it's energy making seeds, not storing food. We had a market garden. Asparagus was easy. Planted it with plenty of rotted cow manure in the trench, covered with good soil and a thick mulch. Every fall, the tops were cut and hauled away (because of a chance of pests). 6 inches of manure covered the bed and mulch. The bed was a very heavy producer. One woman I know would put down thick mulch after she stopped cutting and 'planted' mushroom spore in the straw.

    • @rotcaka
      @rotcaka 5 месяцев назад

      Yeah, the logic doesn't make sense on this video. Why would the plant be storing energy and making seeds. It would make sense that if you kept cutting it it will keep producing, therefore exhaust roots. Also I think he's trying to say that if it wants to bolt and go to seed quickly, then it probably needs nutrients and shouldn't try and get a lot of productivity and further exhaust the roots ...

      Keeping the stalks from seeing the light of day is more trouble than the casual home gardener usually wants to deal with. It can be done with various methods, but most people are happy and used to the taste of green stalks, so why make it difficult?

      It's not known exactly why some people seem unable to digest it, but it is known that the degree of Post-Asparagus Stinky-Urine Disorder (PASUD) is related to your genealogy. Fewer than half of Britons suffer from it, while almost 100% of the French do.
