I love the Dior bar jackets. They're so elegant. Something about all the bright brass buttons on the Balmain blazer is a little bit too flashy for me. And I also think the Dior jacket would accommodate a greater range of body types, the Balmain looks very slim-fitting through the hip area. You look great in both, Sophie!

I just bought myself a blazer from & Other Stories today that has the same structure as the Dior ones, with the accentuated hips/waist. When I showed it to my mom she immediatly mentioned my love for the Dior 'New Look' silhouet, as it's my absolute favorite designer. And maybe one day I will own a beautiful piece from Dior myself, the bar jacket is absolutely stunning in my opinion!

Love Balmain always, but....I really love the Dior double breasted bar jacket.....maybe because the Balmain is more popular and therefore more visible and always there ...the Dior Bar jacket just oozes sophistication and class in a more nostalgic and classic way ...and it looks fab on you 💋

I would say the Bar Jacket is well know among people who are into fashion history (like I am), studied fashion at collage/uni (like I did), or are Dior fanatics (like I am). The Balmain blazer is more of a millennial social media driven garment.

Instead of waiting for our trip to London, I caved last year and purchased the Balmain in wool on line (yikes!). It was $1,700 plus a $600 store credit. I ended up wearing it everywhere!! Afraid to ruin it, I started looking for a good dupe, found one that really isn't bad. It's from Missguided just called their "military blazer". Cost plus shipping to the US right now is $43.40 (size up if you have larger twins). I so LOVE the Dior you showed but like you said if the weight goes up it's right there, on my hips, mocking me...like now, darn holiday cookies. Thanks so much Sophie! XOXO

Balmain all the way for me! It just fits so well. However, the Dior Bar jacket has really interesting cut, unfortunately I feel like it wouldn't complement my body shape. I feel like it would create the illusion of my hips to be even wider :D. Anyway, anything looks god on you Sophie! Love your style.

  • @kaceynm

I think that another vital component separating the Dior Bar Jacket and the Balmain blazer is proportion and body type. I for one would run screaming from the Balmain because as an inverted triangle the prominent shoulder pads would only make my already small hips look smaller. If you take the hourglass to be the “beauty standard” for women (whether that standard conforms to your style being another consideration of course), then the Balmain is a dream for pears as it would balance the volume on the bottom. Famous Balmain-wearer Kim K happens to be a pear. The feminized hips on the Dior add volume to the bottom, which is perfect for inverted triangles like myself. I think it’s important to not only look at clothing pieces aesthetically, but also in how they suit us as individuals. I for one will be looking for Dior Bar jacket dupes lol! Loved the video! 😘

I purchased my first Balmain blazer in a US store at end of holiday season. It was 50% off and they charged $75 for alterations (sleeve hem). Typically alterations are free but if it’s sale, they charge for it. To me, it was worth it to have done right. It is a tomato red but beautiful. I also got a white tshirt and knit skirt 1/2 off. I would love a Dior single-breasted jacket but not sure I can justify the price. Maybe someday and I’m sure it’s a great investment piece. Great tips and thank you!!

Enjoyed the video. My favourite is definitely the Balmain jacket. A real classic. Maybe because I'm now 70 but in the 1980s this was all the style. Double breasted, metal buttons etc. My style. To me the bar jacket looked nice but as you said a bit utility. A style my mother wore in the 1950s .

Touch choice as you look so beautiful in both - but the Balmain does it for me slightly more. I just purchased my first one and actually went into the Balmain Store in Harrods, any alterations you need, they do them for you free of charge, and if you get bored with the buttons, and want to change them to the different motif or from gold to silver, they will also arrange that for you - so thats nice to know. I was wary about going into a store as have read your other blogs - eeeek! but I was helped by a lovely SA called Olga and they honestly couldn't have made the experience nicer :) xx Keep being awesome Soph x

Love it! I have one balmain blazer in classic black wool with gold buttons that I purchased in Paris. I couldn’t find this particular classic combo on sale in my size (38). But I’m definitely on the hunt for a seasonal colour for a discount. To be honest, there aren’t many times I can wear it- in Toronto it’s boiling and humid in the summers. Winter is way too cold. So I’m only left with spring and fall which now tend to have unpredictable weather (rainy and cold). But I still love it. Looks amazing on with dresses and skirts on an evening out. I wore mine to the casino one night in the summer and got compliments from older men who said it looks so classy!
I got to try on the Dior bar jacket in Las Vegas. It was nice and I appreciated that they could tailor it to fit me like a glove. But the price was over $4000.00 USD which would be like $5000.00, so I was like “hmmmmm.... no” lol

I’m very impressed with your Dior knowledge of Savoir-Faire. Fabulous. Got the year right and the idea behind the design! I know this is jacket-centric but the skirt that went with The New Look was a huge issue for society because fabric was being rationed, etc. People saw it as an affront and a bit braggadocious! But the idea worked, everyone in Paris was talking about Christian Dior. Miss Dior, the perfume was sprayed so much during the first fashion show that people smelled of it months later on their coats, which also contributed to its early success.

The Bar jacket is my personal choice especially the double breasted. It looks more elegant and classic but like you said you can still dress them down and also make them look more edgy depending on how you style them. You can do that with Balmain but I think the bar jacket is more versatile. Besides Dior is one of my favorite designer brand and I hope someday I can purchase Dior.

I tried on the bar jacket in Hawaii last month. It’s definitely on my wishlist. The balmain jacket just screams Adam Ant to me. I would feel like I was going to an eighties costume party. I thought that the jackets should have all been a little longer waisted for you but the Balmain fits you better than the Dior. If I ever get the chance I would like to try on the linen jacket. It’s so hard to wear a suit when it is over 100 degrees here in LasVegas.

What a coincidence you are posting this now. I saw the video where you tried on the bar jackets a while ago and kept wondering whether the cut of the bar jacket probably is a bit short in the bodice part for your anatomy. It looks to me that if it only was a little longer from shoulder to waist than it actually is it would fit so much better aka more bar-jacket-like. As it is I have the impression the waistline comes a bit high on you and as a consequence the seam line is rather hig on you, too, so that the hip part sits a bit above your actual hip line.
The original 1947 bar jacket (and I´m coming from the point of view of a vintage clothes´ lover not a current designer clothes connoisseur´s ) used to be cut very accurately along the lines of the body (which on the other hand used to be optimized by rigid undergarments cinching the waist and padding the hips) and this really gave the perfect effect. I think the original jacket even was padded around the hips itself on the inside.
In my opinion the cut of the Balmain jackets fits your body better.
Nitpicking... you look stunning in both of course!

I do say that the Dior is a classic, it has been revolutionary at that time. Still very feminine. I think the Balmain is nice. I like it never the less I will like to have both: so I will not choose... :)

Funniest thing, I was just gagging over the Dior Spring '20 Ready to Wear photos. Seriously laughing at country bumpkins, Hula Dresses that look like they rolled through a haystack and pressed flower after school projects made into clothing. At that price point I'd rather go classic and smart. I really dont get it! There's no shape and the colors 🙄 I thought "I wonder what Sophie will say". Then you popped up talking about classic fitted blazers! 👏👏

This was extremely helpful because I love a good jacket with blue jeans I am 17 1/2 Across the shoulders. So I’m thinking of 44 or 46. That being said the softer silhouette of the Dior bar jacket appeals. The sharp Balmain shoulders might be too scary on a girl like me

I've got one in pink nude and love to wear it open, also didn't pay full price, they occasionally go on sale on Meiman or Saks. Sophie, you look great in all of them!Hugs❤ Show me how you deal with that slim Dior belt, I feel it's always tricky to close when I am in a hurry :(
