Full cave certified in early 90's...no one in our class consistently was able to locate line, nor was able to follow line in many cases on lights out drill. It is much, much harder than it looks, but it gives you a chance!

This is one drill I am struggling with in my pursuit of getting through full cave. Great video to remind me what I need to do (up until 3:45, as the rest goes against my cave training). Thanks.

If this was lost line drill ( in black out- no visibility ) than it was hilarious ( directional marker, deploying non directional marker, writing note in no visibility and then giving up his back up light in no visibility???) , if it was "just lost line " than it will be acceptable ( however giving up back up light ???? )

I see this comment is 8 yrs. old but for what it's worth I had the same thought. Seems reckless to voluntarily leave your backup light.

Thank you, that is a tricky skill, especially if you miss the line by going under it and have to continue on the wall and the ceiling. The ending was unusual, however. Installing a light on the line IMHO belongs to the "lost diver" drill, not to the "lost line". The purpose is to make your buddy see the exit marker which you leave for him/her after you stop searching and leave the cave. The same goes for the message, which can be written on a page of your wetnotes. Secondly, if the bolt snap points to the presumed exit, why would you place an arrow and a REM on top of that? Two directional markers next to each other could be perceived by someone as a sign for a jump. REM is a directional marker, not merely a slate to write on.

Downside is when communicating with buddy , you blind them.

May I ask: What is a REM?

A bit late, but for future interest a referencing exit marker or REM is a marker designed to be used as an arrow by the diver placing it and a cookie (non-directional marker) by others.
It includes personal or team identification on one side and a small slate on the other to write on.
