Every city has nightclubs - social venues where people can mingle with strangers, dance with friends, and escape the monotony of life in an environment of darkness, music, and chaos. As businesses, all nightclubs face the same challenge every week. If you’re a club owner, how do you make your nightclub desirable? How can you make your nightclub pop on a regular Thursday, Friday, or Saturday without headliners?
The answer is promoters. Promoters are the invisible men and women who work tirelessly to turn clubs from slow, empty venues into packed, exciting destinations every week. Cities are defined by their nightlife and Chicago is home to some of the best clubs in the world.
In this Modern MBA exclusive, we’re diving deep into the secret world of nightclubs and club promoters. We’ll ride along with 3 of the city’s leading promoters in Derrick, Jay, and Eric, observe their hustle, and learn the strategies that they use to throw the hottest parties in Chicago.

Thumbnail got me thinking it's a VICE video lol
Going to comment the same thing 😅😂
Same
The font for the subtitles are the same as well
God i miss old vice and viceland

Can’t wait for the wendover collab on the logistics of supply chain of girls to clubs lol
Lmaoooo
Only if private jets are involved.
Damn Modern MBA pulling out the disclaimer for this one
Was thinkin the same thing lol. Like damn this finna be real af.
Because there will be someone complaining about the content if there wasn't one.
It was nice having you brother, you are welcome in the chi anytime ☝🏻
Can I build your house in Melbourne in return to skip the line and green room?
I think I was most impressed by you my man, whatever the field, professionalism is respectable.
How do I get a job as a bouncer do you have any recommendations
Jay is professional but Eric is a true craftsman
He is . He’s very good at what he does. He been doing it longer than anyone in Chicago.
that's like saying people who go to work, go to work. he is WORKING at these venues to ensure money keeps rolling in. you expected him to partake in these activities? this is not free time
Thanks for having me! Love working with you and plan on working with you in the future.
super admire your professionalism man
@ModernMBA Great video and awesome experience my guy. Glad you were able to see our world behind the scenes. Really appreciate working with you, thanks for everything! See you in May!
Ay yo, I'm super impressed with the hustle and the level of thought and involvement you put in. Props man!
@@sammitraTYSM! What’s left out is that I book a lot of young dj’s and manage them to bring in ppl to help fill the party which gives them experience and lands them other gigs in the scene as well. Also my 2 assistants kya and jazz are just as important as me, entertaining everyone when I’m not. My goal is to interact with every single person that walks through our doors. It’s not just a job, it’s my passion, my life. Along with emphasizing that mental health is first. Balance. The nightlife industry is not for everyone!
@@ericbosschicago Mad props man. I do cocktail events in NYC would love to collab but really just wanna say how you were talking about giving people a good experience is exactly why I started as well. As a bartender I've always loved peoples' curiosity and fascination with cocktails and in private events I always look to feed peoples' imagination and give them the attention they don't usually get in a typical bar. much love from NYC ❤
Sorry to blow up your phone just that little bit more, but I've gotta say, you are absolutely awesome! Hope you have a good one, man!
you are a legend. where is the club?@@ericbosschicago
The professionalism from these promoters surprised me, but it really shouldn’t have. I’m sure the scummy ones get weeded out fast, while the ones who take it seriously make good money for years
What would make you so sure about that?
I'd wager that most are scummy, and these are the exception.
uh this is a JOB, not his backyard or bedroom. he is at WORK inside of the club, to expect him to party along with the guests makes no sense. his job is not to party, it is to setup and setup and setup and keep the income rolling.
they usually own a percentage of the venue or multiple
These guys are scummy too. What makes you think otherwise?
@@raphaeldwain7834if you’re scummy, your business will never, ever last long
One of the most unique business case study. The quality is off charts.
Loved this format! It’s not theoretical breakdowns and spreadsheets which is great on its own but this is on the ground and gives real perspective. And draws parallels to other businesses which is genius. This channel is doing the work for real!
Would be interesting to look at the macro of nightlife as a business as the newer generation is reportedly not going out as much.
The club scene is so far removed from what I like. Going to a club is sounds like an absolute nightmare...but this video is so fascinating.
it can be fun with friends
I actually LOVE this format. Seeing multiple different people and the ways that they work and accomplish the goals required by the industry in their own ways is so illuminating, and I really hope we get to see and meet more people this way. And kudos to everyone featured on their hard work and their future successes. :-)
I’ve watched nearly the entire Modern MBA catalogue, and this might just be the best video yet. Interesting topic, interesting angle-almost journalistic in nature. I’d love to see more deep-dive content like this!
Love to see Eric Boss getting his due. I’ve had the pleasure of DJing house and sushi a few times and the energy is always unmatched. He’s good people
TYSM brother! Been a minute! Greatly appreciate you and the work we’ve done together. Let me know if you ever want to run it back!
@@ericbosschicagoi have friends in chicago, after seeing how much hardwork and love you put into these you've earned my respect. When i come to visit Chicago we'll definitely come to one of your parties if you'll have us ❤
Just curious, what is stopping you from opening your own night club? @@ericbosschicago
@@zellazenith8797 greatly appreciate that! Where are you located?
What I was impressed with Eric's party was that the partygoers do not look like traditionally club going people. Their race and profiles seem to be out of normal crowds attracted to clubs, and his events expands the horizons for the people themselves and the club expands the clientele on behalf of the industry. Eric is really doing a phenomenal job, from what's shown in the video.
Eric's parties seem so cool. If I wasn't introverted, a normal weekday 9-to-5 worker, and not anywhere close to Chicago, I'd check them out lol
I really love this particular episode because the industry isn't as transparent as others. Please make more similar videos about industries that operate and exist right under our noses!!
Dude you're giving away the game! Lol 20+ years of learning nightlife in a 30ish minute video. Crazy. Great stuff
I haven’t been in a night club in like 15 years but it’s so cool to learn more about how they operate. I always assumed they were sketchy and manipulative. But now I seeing that last promoter Derrick just trying to bring the party and help people have fun on a Wednesday night, I can tell it’s hard work and he takes pride in it.
This! Great video that really cleared up some misconceptions for me.
I think Derrick was the first promoter and Eric the last one, right? (Not trying to be a dick with this correction lol)
@@iterativegrowth Haha yeah thanks for correcting me. it may have been Eric. The third guy in the video.
The CodeGoat himself!
I mean it is sketchy
This is a new video for you and me. I never thought about the business side of these party scenes.
I was never popular enough to get invited anywhere as a kid so I never went to nightclubs as an adult
Flying low is more of a privilege than you think...
This is so out of left field but I clicked immediately and ain't leaving
i feel like i need to take a shower again after watching this. lol
The promoter business is so lame when you realise what it is... apart from the sex they would get from dumb ladies
true, I'm not one for clubs/nightlife and this video just reinforced that. All this club stuff looked cringe
@@shampoable good thing I wasn't the only one. All of these vapid fake thots with their dumbass plastic talons.
yeah the way they talk about women makes my skin crawl a little..
these guys are professionals, but that guy who made the club popping in a Wednesday, that's an art.
Love this. Such a high level of thinking in a business of informalities
So informal. No handbook. Just chaos lol.
I'm a former clubber in Chicago!
There was/is so much discrimination when clubbing in Chicago while Black, my friends and I were turned away so many times during our 20s.
It wasn't cuz you were black baby girl they discriminate in looks.
Considering the demographics of this city, this is wild to hear! (But not unbelievable). I hope things have gotten better, but the shallow take on prioritizing 9s/10s/12s etc means they probably still get away with a lot. (Especially up north of the river, which is where I imagine a lot of these clubs are?)
I get it, gotta sell tables, but it's why I've never gotten into the scene. I don't even wear makeup - give me a chill open mic bar any night. Sorry to gravedig a month old comment, but really do hope things are going well for you. Chicago is an incredible city, I feel like it shouldn't be rare to see positive things about it on here, but it is. This was a nice change
I haven't watched Vice in years.
I haven't watched it in days.
This is honestly the best Modern MBA video. It’s so high quality, amazing content.
Love this video! Three different promoters, 3 different marketing strategies!
Derik - selling exclusivity within the nightclub's prime real estate / traditional word of mouth branding/venue aimed at younger crowd between the ages of 21 - 26
Jay - 2-person team leveraging technology for scalability & hospitable hosting / bringing in as many guests he can for scale / letting the club's reputation do the branding with known local DJ & headliner artist
Eric - bringing young professionals & older demographic to relive the party days / using props to create a fun atmosphere to liven up the crowd / bringing consistent businesses to the venue that would otherwise close on a typical weeknight
This is so humbling as a girl, I went to mami with my friends and I was the only one not let in the club. It was so humiliating, we came from Chicago all the way down for my friend’s 21st birthday. Safe to say I was never invited out again 😢
wait so even if u offer to pay to get in they wont let u if they dont think u r pretty ? or did u not bother to try again bc i know i wouldnt tbh
What did your friends do? As someone who now lives in Chicago who also knows Miami well it’s not surprising it was Miami but definitely odd they wouldn’t let you in at all or your friends wouldn’t stick up for you? Mind sharing the details of what happened?
@@adeptsaxophonist all Latinas and I’m a dark skin black girl. It’s crazy bc I’m also an exotic dancer… I get hired at hard clubs to get into. So I know I’m beautiful, well just as beautiful as them.
Man, such a good insight to this world that I never knew existed. Much respect to the promoters out there, it's a grind and an art at the same time 👌
Weird. The viewcount for this video is significantly lower than other videos. This video didnt pop up in my subscriptions at all and I had to search for it. The algorithm does not like something here for sure.
Great video as always. Super informative to learn about these hidden in plain sight industries.
the thumbnail isn't like his others and his title is too specific to Chicago
He should have followed people Chicago, Vegas, NYC, LA, Miami, and London, Dubai for international. That would present a better representation of what it's like. In this video it's most Chicago natives who are coming into these clubs. But in other, more tourist centric cities, you have to somewhat change up your approach and the competition is bigger. The need to attract whales is bigger. I saw one video talking about promoters in Vegas catering to whales who spend $10-100k easy but these promoters have to find women and whatever the whale wants including drugs and sex workers (if the women are not on board). The hotels and clubs are often in on it as well.
Search atmosphere models and you should see videos about it
@@h1inc816that video would have taken so much more money and time to make. I think he painted a pretty good picture here. Not sure it's worth it
The editor used to work at VICE
Man, this ended up being far more interesting and less sleazy than I was expecting lol. I’m 31 and a native Chicagoan and while I never really got into clubbing, Chicago’s nightlife and clubbing scene is as good and fun as the best of them. There’s so many different and dynamic offerings here in the city if you’re into the nightlife and you can have some crazy fun experiences if you know which clubs to go to. This inside look at the logistics of how these places are ran was fascinating. I will say that while I didn’t really care for the two guys or their clubs, the last one looked more vibrant, chill, fun and I really liked the hard work and dedication of the last promoter. That club feels more inclusive and sexy and thrilling, with a diverse mix of people and would be a little more up my alley, even though I don’t generally go to clubs. I may actually consider hitting that one up sometime on my off days.
Overall, great work, MBA! This was one if your best yet and the cinematography used for the footage was impressive. I hope you got to experience even more of the Chi and enjoyed your time here. I’m looking forward to your next deep dive.
first 2 are where you spend money to impress & the people spending money are the ones who feel they need to do that, the last club is where you go to have fun in a fun environment - which, for me personally, is step 1 -- bc I am not spending >$1k in a night if I am not having fun first. I dont care who thinks I look cool or I got it lol
Great insights, really enjoyed this video. Have never seen a look into this world as close as this. Also very cool to see you guys experiment with this new video style! This is definitely something that I'm going to forward to friends/colleagues.
The last one honestly does feel like the best time. Not being judemental is the best way to have fun in life. The other two just feel worse.
Same, the heavy emphasis on gender ratios and such feels so weird and grating-bubble guns and sushi sounds a lot more fun.
Considering that it happens on a Thursday I imagine the club is willing to be more experimental/lax.
Thank you! What we do is different. I’m actually curating, coordinating operations, and hosting the party. I strive to make each one of my concepts an experience.
Fantastic episode. Really appreciate the extra mile you went on this. The footage, the characters, the nitty gritty. I hope the algorithm picks it up.
So glad this came across my feed, this is such a well put together and fascinating look into nightlife. Thank you for creating and sharing this!!!
im so glad you are leveling up your production, you provide great and informative content
This has been sitting in my watch later for a month. This is 10000% your best video. I'm sure these are massive labors of love and this has certainly been under appreciated but I think this would make your channel explode.
This was a great video. Reminds me of the book Very Important People by Ashley Mears who goes undercover in the NYC club scene to investigate the lives of promoters and how they operate.
One of the best videos you've put so far, great job!
Your content just keeps getting better and better. I hope you keep this up.
Love this format! Great change of pace from the other vids
Really great video, love this type of format, Something we all see and hear but never knew the insight behind. This can be a good niche for you and separate you from other 1000 of business breakdown channels
Some clubs do have paid models to make guys buy the most expensive bottles.
As someone that is a huge promotor in one of the top nightlife areas in the world (NEW ORLEANS ), this video hits almost every aspect of the behind the scenes work that doesn’t get acknowledged! My personal strategy with booking clubs and bar/clubs (they’re not the same) is mainly getting popular headliners that don’t break the bank. I do my largest events on Mon-Wednesday and have gotten over 10 million views just on Instagram for one party. This video saying it’s “challenging” to pack out a venue on a weekday is true but not impossible. I’ve done it successfully multiple times in last 6 months and I’m gonna do it again. If you want to get into this lifestyle it’s not for the faint of heart, competition is steep with 100’s of people trying to do the same as you in the same zip code. You have to deliver an impecable product that people want to spend their hard earned money on, basically on a weekly or biweekly basis. Good luck !
Do you sell drugs ?
My man! Keep it up!
Respect on this vid. Amazing work. I hope you can do more videos like this one about different niches in the business world.
this video was so much more interesting than i thought it would be! another banger
This was awesome! Thank you for putting in the effort. I was aware this existed but knew none of the details, and the details were hard to find.
Really cool documentary! Never thought I'd find this topic interesting, yet here I am. Keep up the great content💪
thats great. I'm still not setting foot in Illinois
😂 Best comment yet lol
What a fire video! Insane format! Loved it 🎉
It's a good day when ModernMBA uploads a video
This was extremely interesting and enlightening. I appreciate the respect you gave each of these men as they worked their craft and created value and great memories for their marketplace and target customers. I feel like a lot of people would look down on these promoters, which is too bad. All I see is extremely astute businessmen who know their product, market, and niche and who go out every weekend and create real memories for the people they work with. A lot of respect for these guys working hard, and for you the content creator showing us the business of clubbing with no judgement. I never thought about the economics of a night club but they are fascinating. You have a new subscriber
banger of a video. Most high-effort business channel on yt, by far.
Great video!
That was unexpectedly fascinating. I had no idea there was so much complexity behind clubs
What an amazing video. A great look at a side of an industry I don't really know much about. The amount of work and connections that they make really blows my mind.
You've a talent of making a complicated thing sound so professional and clear. Thank you for this video!
A lot different than your usual style but I actually really liked it. Good to see you branching out.
new Modern MBA video, it's a good day today :)
Phenominal job on the new style. Really did a great thing here
Production Quality is very good! The insight you gave us into this industry is unprecedented.
Incredible documentary. Well shot, edited, and directed. I was interested from start to finish.
Excellent video. Shout out to these fellas working magic to keep the nightlife lit. I definitely may be working with them
Very interesting video. I love yau'll usual content, but this is a really neat change of pace. Looking forward to what else yau'll bust out in the future!
Wow ModernMBA came to my city! 😍😍😍
Love your videos bro! ❤
wow, great video!
I watch every video but I found this video especially fascinating. Ironically I'm not much of a clubber. It feels like a rich man's game and I'm far from rich. But the logistics of it, how much work goes into making it an memorable experience is really cool to see. I like bars and I like getting to know the staff and i don't live in a major city, so this was an interesting step up.
I planned a friend's birthday and wound up doing similar work to a promoter (for a party of like 7-8 lol), and that was a task. Can't even imagine trying to fill an entire nightclub in a major city, I don't have the social battery for that lol.
That Eric guy is a genius imo lol I wanna go to one of his parties.
thanks for this. really cool perspective
Complete master class. Thanks for the video
What a great channel.. discovered through this video and I love the concept. 10/10
Watching this from River North, Chicago!
Sooo cooool great video man
This newer style of “documentary” video is awesome, I’d love to see more!
This was great, love your content 🙏🥰
Man this is such a unique and well researched and presented video essay. I feel bad it’s not getting enough views, think maybe the algorithm is hindering because not as “family friendly”
This was different and awesome!
Wow amazing documentary
This was a fresh take. Thanks for making the video!
enjoyed that alot, informative
I want to know more about jay! A math teacher who hustles people into clubs is a fascinating career
😂
This is the best video you have made to date.
Does this seem like a lot of work for low margins?
It is. If I wanted less work and more money I would’ve stayed an it recruiter lol. I love what I do. Grateful for that 🙏
@@ericbosschicago as a software engineer, I know why you got out of that line of work lol. God I am grateful I am not on the job hunt atm.
this channel is so fantastic
Excellent documentary. I got all the party I needed out of my system and it's just so much better financially
$400-800 pretax for the night sounds kind of low. I’m assuming 8 hours of work at the club per day and another 20-30 hours of work planning everything before the club, sounds close to $20-30 per hour
The first guy? I dont think he puts in more than 2hs planning per week, its just managing his network and answering texts
You're missing the fact that he's getting paid to have fun (this is subjective of course), hang out with beautiful women and drink... Most people PAY to do these things, he's getting paid, regardless of whether it's 30 bucks an hour or not.
love the content switch up
This is a great vid. I like the change up
Great video. Sorry the algorithm didn't pick it up. I thought this was a vice video at first until I read that you made it.
This is quite literally my biggest hobby for the past few months. Going to different venues fridays and saturdays. Living next to Toronto is a dream, tons and tons of spots to check out.
Fascinating video. For the club the tables are inventory, for the promoters the women are the inventory. I like the way Jay uses social media and dating apps, Tinder and Instagram, to get new inventory, sort them out in different packages and assign them to clubs. And of course as with any product, the parento principle reigns, a few women will be on the top list and account for 80% of the referrals. Would be interesting to see what Chris Williamson of Modern Wisdom thinks of this video
Great vid
Excellent video. Incredibly informative
Inclusive and non-pretensious parties- Man I love Eric.

Chicago doesn't even need this. Chicago is the launching pad for House Music.
All they have to do is book an old school house music DJ. just as they did 40 years ago.
