    Looks to have been an error in the rendering where the video states "Emerald Banjk" instead of Emerald Bank, unfortunately this doesn't look to be something I can fix as the spelling is correct in the project but only is incorrect in rendered video.

    They have done a superb job, considering the locomotive had to be regauged as well.
    The SAR used 2' gauge to run these on, as does the Welsh Highland Railway, but the Puffing Billy Railway is 2'6".
    They certainly had to widen the frames to do so.
    I have a general drawing and this shows that there isn't enough clearance between the wheels and the frames in their original spacing for the additional 3" each side.
    However there was enough space between the frames and the outside cranks to move the frames out a couple of inches each side, and there was enough clearance within the pony truck frames to move the wheels out.
    So with a 2-3 inch extra spacer fitted to each side of the original frame spacers the job could be done, without having to make changes to the cylinders or motion, as the outside cranks could be kept in their original position.
    I guess new axles had to be turned as the original axles had a boss on which the wheels were fitted spaced for the 2' gauge.

    At the 6:11 point something about the light conditions has the locomotives appearing to be painted a dark olive green instead of the black which they generally look to be.

      Indeed, NG129 is technically the same class as the ones at the WHR, but NG129 & NG199 Were Reguaged For The Victorian Narrow Gauge

    from the 1960s until the 1990s it was just a fantasy to get G42 going, let alone the static Menzies creek museum piece SAR garret, but here they are

      It’s so that if the train derails, it won’t fall off the bridge. Or at least that’s what I learned. 🙂

    Just a query if what I am told it took approx 3 million dollars to restore the African Garrett to steam. Then how does the railway hope to redeem even a fraction of this cost considering there is another NNG 16 at Menzies creek museum. Is that there for spares or is long term restoration the aim. Does the railway get some kind of tourist grant from the government?? I just can’t see how you intend to recrude the overall cost.
    It’s a fine achievement to repair it but also very expensive

      The operation runs most days of the year with multiple trips each day. It is mainly run by volunteers. I have no idea what the running cost of a return trip is but assuming ~$1500-$2500 (inclusive of wages, track maintenance and all rolling stock) then I feel the organization is more than capable capable of costing its own tickets since it has been running for some time now. Additionally I assert the ticket cost has generated enough surplus income to be able to afford to undertake new projects. That'd be my guess. Shouldn't be too hard to understand - surely?

      Some of these railroads also use sponsorship, this isn't something you get into if you want to make a profit.

    I'm surprised they actually ran the train given it was 40 odd degrees. Shouldn't that mean they're not allowed to run the steam locos?

      The railway decides about running steam locos or not based off of if there is a Total Fire Ban in Victoria, if the fire ban is enforced then no steam engines would operate that day. The actual temperature has no effect on wether the engines run or not (to a point), but it seemed to have been fine to run the garratts that day.

      I would be more concerned with the track expansion and potential buckling.

      @@rvnmedic1968 track is fishplates together, so expansion is less of an issue. Continuously welded track, like that used on the suburban rail is a lot more prone to buckling

      @@corndog-1 Well, I mentioned that based on my experience doing track repair on a short line RR. If we had to replace a track section (stick), we would do it very early in the day as it would be difficult later when the temps are in the 90s (F). Then it would be difficult to insert the good rail due to the expansion of the adjoining plates. Cheers.
