The fourth stack of the Titanic doesn't smoke because it was added as a decoration of the her design. The way she was built, the White Star Line wanted the ship to look far more superior with luxury, despite how they claimed her unsinkable.
Quite an amazing set it is! I used to be all over the Titanic disaster, and I've read a bit too much about it. I love the fact Oxford did just enough research to know about the fourth stack and how it was used to make the ship look more powerful, and more like her sister ship, the RMS Olympic.I'll personally be on the lookout for this toy, and, if nothing goes right, I can just save up and buy it from Amazon. Great review, Leo.
The final funnel wasn't used because it was decoration. True some smoke did come out but that was from kitchens etc but not the engines. The designers thought it looked strange with 3 funnels so added a fourth to even it out. Yes I'm a bit of a titanic fanboy :p
Wow, never knew the kitchen smoke was fed up to that 4th funnel. You learn something new every day! Nothing wrong with being a Titanic fanboy, it's a fabulous piece of modern history.
Because the more funnels a ship had the more well regarded it was. A German ship in the 1870s set a trend for four funnels. The Cunard Lines ships had three so to compete White Star added and extra to the Titanic and Brittanic. These extra funnels did not need to be functional so they were basically like a prop. The funnels were also tilted to make it look speedier.
For those who do not know about oxford toys, i can say they are pretty good. Comparing LEGO city and oxford town, Oxford town sets are very detailed unlike the lego city building have. Also, Oxford cost way cheaper than Lego. In my country, Lego city square cost $309 while a oxford toysrus shop cost only $129, and is very detailed with 1510 pieces. Tbh, i prefer oxford if its for buildings. I dont recommend folks to buy sets with mainly vehicles because the wheels are hard to move after a long time. But most importantly, oxford bricks can fit into lego pretty good.
I'm very impressed by the box itself...for one they got the funnels right. the No. 4 stack on the Titanic was a dummy: put on to make the ship appear grander (IE on par with the RMS Lusitania and its sister) so only funnels 1-3 actually smoked when the ship was under way. You'd be surprised how many get that wrong even today!
Always had a passing interest in the Titanic (my ancestors on my father's side would be spinning in their graves though, they worked as officers on Cunard ships!) The reason for no smoke coming out of the 4th funnel? It was actually a false funnel. At this time in history it was thought by companies such as White Star that passengers associated the number of funnels a ship had with how fast and grand a ship was. In theory Titanic (along with sister ships Olympic and Britannic) were actually three funnel steamers, with an extra one added on to make them appeal more to the public. An early 1900s version of 'go faster stripes', if you will! Inside the 4th funnel was a series of ladders and staircases for inspection purposes. If memory serves me right there's an account of three crew members who used these as a means of escape during the early stages of the sinking, though I could be getting my facts mixed up!
Very nice comment related to the 4th funnel. It was the era of making a big impression by looking like the biggest. Just too sad the number of life rafts did not count in that equation of being grand compared to other ships of the time.
Indeed. It's interesting though to compare it with images of Titanic's sister ship Britannic, showing just how quickly the rule of 'there must be a seat for every person' on the lifeboats'. The derricks capable of handling two lifeboats at a time are rather impressive!
You are right about how people like to cash in on the Titanic there is a really well know knock off Transformer that turns into the Titanic, I saw it once when I in Paris I didn't by it dow. It's also funny to me that you talked about brick tanks when the latest brick set I have preceashed is a Halo Mega Bloks Scorpion tank set.
This pop up shop at Westfield Hornsby is now gone, maybe the website link in the info area will show Oxford bricks selling in Australia. Put it this way these people seem to have prices well below the prices I see from online sellers based overseas.
I know so many people have commented this but I will anyway because it bugs me not to say it's the 4th funnel on the real life titanic was a funnel that was not used for exhaust but for ventilation and the designer thought the ship would look grander with the 4th stack.
I am still shocked at the price of Lego. But it is the dogs nuts of connectable blocks. This set is also really cool. I used to be obsessed with the Titanic when I was younger. Great video Leo.
I've seen that set (along with the mini set of it) for £39.99 at Smyths toy stores (though originally it went for £34.99). Am curious to getting it, though I worry it maybe too big. So I may resort to the mini set at £9.99. While people have explained it already, I may as well say it. The 4th funnel is a fake, as in that area is the engine room and not another boiler room, but the reason it was added was to make the ship look impressive that she had the strength and power of the other large liners.
If I purchased it from Smyths the postage would basically double the price. Seeing the Oxford brand in a shop fro sale was a real treat. I thought it would never happen.
The reason why the Titanic doesn't have the 4th smoke stack functional , the ship in design originally had 3 , but they wanted to make the ship more grand so they added a 4th.
Thanks for the shout out Leo. I paid $65 AUD delivered for the Panther tank a few years ago. I have a new supplier now who I buy them for $45-55 AUD delivered. When you weighed the sets I found that very interesting. I wonder how much of that weight is made up in the LEGO instructions, which are usually very thick and heavy. I think you hit the gold mine with your pop up store. I'm a massive titanic nerd. That fourth funnel was fake. It was was purely for majestic reasons to make the ship look grander. It did vent some exhaust (from the turbines) but not from the coal fires. Thanks for sharing this video with RUclips. I hope more people give brick brands other than LEGO a go.
Wow, that makes my $33 Oxford tanks a real bargain. It will be curious to see how long their stocks last. The store is only there for 4 weeks, I was literally their first customer. They have a web site but it's very under-developed. I think deep down everyone is a Titanic nerd. I remember as a child being told these three disaster stories. 1 Titanic, 2 German ship Bismarck and 3 Hindenberg. All three have lessons for everyone, all 3 have mystery surrounding their disastrous ends. But it's Titanic that has the biggest emotional pull, artifacts related to that ship pull the biggest prices.
I think the reason behind the 4th smoke stack is when they where building the ship they didn't want it to look disproportionate but I don't know that for sure
Hey Leo, I think your Cobi Panther is an older version. I have a Cobi Jagdpanther, and it has a more realistic drive sprocket. And the Tiger in the background on the Cobi Panther's box is the earliest Cobi Tiger model. The newest Cobi models look amazing and realistic.
Great review! I can't believe the discount you got in store vs online. I actually have the Cobi Titanic set, but seeing this Oxford set, I'm super jealous!
Just one more quick thing then I'll bugger off...the Oxford tanks look amazing. I kind of consider myself an amateur military historian (although considering Im getting my degree in archival studies I think that may not be "amateur" for much longer!). Part of the thing that can make or break something like this is how a set looks. German armor from WWII had a very distinctive look. the Cobi set, at first, actually reminded me of the horrible mock-ups done in the past where they used old Russian T-34 tank hulls and tracks to build facsimiles of Tigers and Panthers for movies--IE, they look nothing like the real deal. whereas with the Oxford ones, I knew instantly what I was looking at just by the artwork. The boxy lines of the Tiger were there, and the turret shape was as close as you can get with lego-style brick builds to a Panther's. That speaks volumes about the quality of the sets (to me anyway).
the titanic's forth funnle was for backing in to the dock and for decoration but it was used and you are so lucky I have always liked titanic and always wanted the Lego version or the model you could drive and yes you are right it is at a good price
That's an AMAZING price! I wonder if they're selling it for a loss or if the other sellers are really overpricing it. Interesting about the weight, though branded sets tend to be worse value than the no brand ones when looking at price/part. Hmm, can you sink the Titanic R/C one... :P Those instructions are good, but the lack of numbered bags will be a bit of a headache when sorting for parts!
One thing about Oxford is that they're really trying their best to be better than LEGO. In addition to creating original lines and sets, they do rip off some concepts from LEGO- For example "baby and BeBe" is derived from LEGO Baby. They've even gone on to clone obscure themes, like LEGO Muji with "Block x Paper".
the fourth funnel was a dummy on the real titanic, it was used for some ventilation for the the engine room and it was also used as an allusion for more speed
OMG, look at the AWESOME Oxford bricks 90's Games Room www.oxfordtoy.co.kr/pro/detailox.asp?m_code=16531&p_code=10 The pop up shop has sold out of Titanic and the Tanks. I have their website in the more info of this video, give them some time to get it together and hopefully they will be a great place to buy Oxford bricks in Australia.
No one’s gonna say Lego stole the idea from Oxford as Oxford released the titanic before Lego, but if it was the other way around, all hell breaks loose!! Lol
Great video as always. Interesting to see how it was very cheap but more expensive online. Maybe that gives us an insight towards Ebay and online shopping? I really want you to look at Airfix or scale modeling. It is a recent hobby I've gotten into and I think scale modeling would key in quite well with model trains you frequently bring up. Best thing to do with Airfix kits is to take a couple shots with an airgun I tell ya ;)
It's surprising how expensive online shopping can be, the weird thing is if I typed into the online shops this Titanic model without filtering the search the more expensive sellers get higher listings. Hmmmm, now is that by clever design? Remember the online sites take a cut from the sales. You need to really shop around and buy carefully when shopping anywhere.
the fourth funnel was a dummy funnel when the ship was original built it only needed three but Bruce ismay wanted a fourth funnel so it would compete with the Cunard liners Mauritania and Lusitania they did find a use for the fourth funnel though they stored extra deck chairs in it
Have you heard about Finding Dory? By the way, I've been interested in Titanic for a long time, it was an ocean liner during the time George V was the king of the British Empire.
Send me your address as a PM and I will send you the Oxford tank ;). Easy for me to do and thanks for that Cobi tank. I do wonder how much does that cobi set sell for?
+leokimvideo Hi Leo, I will send you a PM a bit later today :). Thank you for your generosity. I also posted a separate comment with the costs of the COBI tanks and the titanic funnel. (Sorry for multiple comments, I'm replying on my phone which is not something I normally do). I'd love to show you my COBI collection someday. Thanks again. :)
Thats ok, the extra comments did get caught by the spam filter and I let them appear. I think the Cobi Tanks are the premium war tanks but Oxford may be pretty close. I know you sent me that Cobi tank a long time ago, magic does happen eventually. It's funny how something put on the shelf will have a purpose eventually. I have stopped collecting Lego Minifigures. The Disney series set was a good reason to stop. Just too much baby branding in that one for me.
leokimvideo The hysteria around the Disney figures is baffling. They are sold out everywhere and fetching high prices on eBay and Gumtree. It's getting mad out there!
Went to my local Myer. All 4 boxes in storeroom purchased by one person, sold out in all stores. Dare say there will be a Mr Gold Mickey Mouse Minifigure next...you heard it here first.
Leokimvideo as a Titanic expert I know this fact like the back of my hand ( Dont mean to brag sorry if ofended. Also my spelng is amasing ) so anyway the 4th funnel had no smoke because it was a dummy funnel and was used for storeage and ventilation and white star line put it there because it made the ship look bigger hope this helped :)
Lego did do a Toy Story war theme set. I showed that and spoke about that set in the argument that Lego have done war sets. I bought it in the bargain bin because it was not popular. Some of the Indiana Jones sets were also hovering close to war themes. I dare say those Indiana jones sets are worth big bucks now.
My model of the TITANIC still looks cooler. It doesn't have the distortion I see in more popular models such as this one here. Quick question: Does it break into two pieces between the two central funnels? That's a key feature in the famous disaster.
When you're done with the brick TITANIC, show us the sinking. That'll be fun. >:) The reason why (13:01) is that the fourth funnel was just a vent; it was only added to make the ship more elegant.
Leo Your lucky to get the rc titanic for 40 dollar I'm trying to find one but there to expensive including the Oxford titanic I can't find a cheap version like yours I am a big fan of the titanic the reason why there is no smoke of the 4th funnel was that it was a display it didn't work the white store light which is the creator of the titanic they thought only 3 funnels looked weird so they added a fake one by the way the titanic sank on April 15 1912
It was Titanic that sunk not Olympic, although they where the same class of ship, they where built to different designs, Titanic was slightly longer the Olympic
at 2:20 am she sank by an iceberg she split in half, tons of people died mostly men because " women and children first". and there wasn't enough lifeboats.
There was 3 ships all sisters olymic , titanic and Britannic and olymic was the first one to be built and then titanic and the last one to be Britannic and as for why olymic don't help the titanic was she was in dry dock under going repairs form a run in with a ship
I've never seen anything like this in the toy stores. It's mostly Lego or mega blocks. I wonder why Lego would not create a set like this for customers.
TheNw1218 Oxford toys are AMAZING! They are not a rip off to buy nor have any copyrights from LEGO. What i like is that they cost really cheap, but the quality is like lego, and able to fit into LEGO bricks! But one thing i do not like is that the vehicles are kind of hard to move.
The titanic sunk because they were trying to find the key to lock the unsinkable part of the boat they could not find the key so they hit the iceberg and it sunk
The fourth stack of the Titanic doesn't smoke because it was added as a decoration of the her design. The way she was built, the White Star Line wanted the ship to look far more superior with luxury, despite how they claimed her unsinkable.

And the 4th funnel was added to look the same as its sister ship olymic
It was used to make it look bigger. The third funnel was actually a functioning ventilation for the men working in the boiler rooms.
Wow, never knew the kitchen smoke was fed up to that 4th funnel. You learn something new every day!
Nothing wrong with being a Titanic fanboy, it's a fabulous piece of modern history.
+leokimvideo dint think you'd actually reply! It's an honour :p
Taffington Toof maybe I'm 11 but I'm absolutely obsessed with the Titanic!

No smoke from the fourth chimney because the fourth chimney was only added for decoration. when I was 10-12 I was OBSESSED with TITANIC!
The final funnel wasnt used as an exhaust pipe for the boilers also the 4th funnel had another use as a part to hold the dog kennels
This pop up shop at Westfield Hornsby is now gone, maybe the website link in the info area will show Oxford bricks selling in Australia. Put it this way these people seem to have prices well below the prices I see from online sellers based overseas.
leokimvideo
The reson theres no smoke coming out of the 4th smokestack is the real 4th smokestack on Titanic was for the vents not steam.
leokimvideo it's because the 3-1 Is real smokestacks the 4th smokestack is fake it was just for look
I know so many people have commented this but I will anyway because it bugs me not to say it's the 4th funnel on the real life titanic was a funnel that was not used for exhaust but for ventilation and the designer thought the ship would look grander with the 4th stack.

leokimvideo I agree, they all have a large interest to the public. You're right, Titanic still draws the biggest emotional connection (and prices).
+leokimvideo just build the dam titanic already.
when I was just talking to you on Tuesday I'm getting the same titanic
the reason why the 4th funnel as no smoke coming out is because it's used for ventilation and to make the Olympic class ships look bigger.

Talk about the actual one that’s about as long as a man laid out flat
I was really thinking of the Missouri ship though
Just one more quick thing then I'll bugger off...the Oxford tanks look amazing. the forth funnel was used for decoration and i also think for ventilation
the secret to the smoke stacks is that the 4th one is a dummy it provided ventilation for the boiler room.
I love the Titanic! 😀
That's an AMAZING price! I wonder if they're selling it for a loss or if the other sellers are really overpricing it. Interesting about the weight, though branded sets tend to be worse value than the no brand ones when looking at price/part. I want this! Hobby lobby better have this.
hey leo will you show another mlp dark side video but with only g4 ponys
the Titanic's fourth funnel thing isn't smoking because it was for aesthetics
Titanic actually sank in 1912 after hitting an iceberg. The sunken ship was first found in 1985.
Yeah and to make the ship look grander
Slowly but surely, you're being dragged into the Titanic fandom. :)
hey Leo can you please do another Oxford set please
the 4th funnel was not used for an engine, it was a decoration.
OMG, look at the AWESOME Oxford bricks 90's Games Room www.oxfordtoy.co.kr/pro/detailox.asp?m_code=16531&p_code=10
The pop up shop has sold out of Titanic and the Tanks. I have their website in the more info of this video, give them some time to get it together and hopefully they will be a great place to buy Oxford bricks in Australia.
The fourth funnel was for ventilation
the 4th funnel was meant for the titanic to look better and for ventilation
the fourth one was for looks, and every boat finatic knows that ships have triple expansion engines, not quad expansion.
No one’s gonna say Lego stole the idea from Oxford as Oxford released the titanic before Lego, but if it was the other way around, all hell breaks loose!! Lol
I want to find where to get the rc titanic is there a site?
The fourth smoke stack was a spare if one got clogged
The 4th smoke stack isn't smoking because it's fake and it has a latter going down to the boiler room
Omg Leo where did u get that rc titanic for 7 years I've always dreamed about owning one but they're too expensive for me :(
the fourth funnel was a dummy funnel when the ship was original built it only needed three but Bruce ismay wanted a fourth funnel so it would compete with the Cunard liners Mauritania and Lusitania they did find a use for the fourth funnel though they stored extra deck chairs in it
Does the Oxford Brick Titanic float in water by any chance?
I'm so into titanic I made a drawing for my teacher about it, and have 18 books about it
The 4th funnel was a fake to make the ship more impressive and larger, the 4th funnel is not needn't on the ship. Only the first 3
I wonder how many people have this set in the world cause he’s making it out to be a rare set for most people
The word 'rare' is a very dangerous one in the toy realm. It's often used to inflate prices on eBay
Well, sorry for the compliment
Leo, The last funnel was a faker for decoration.
The shipbuilders thought it made it look better, thus no smoke.
The sad part that this model does not have the propellers
the ship that sank was not Titanic it was the Olympics but suopted the name around so Olympics was hit but with Titanic name plat on it
It's a conspiracy theory...
That sounds like a great movie script.
+leokimvideo it does the only reason why the name suopted because of the instructions :-)
It really does, but you will need lots of tinfoil
Um pretty sure titanic sank
Wow this set looks great. I'm going to have to try and find one in QLD for that price :) $69 is a bargain!!!
Have you heard about Finding Dory? By the way, I've been interested in Titanic for a long time, it was an ocean liner during the time George V was the king of the British Empire.
The back funle is for Aer condishining in the engine room
I also can't believe you only paid $35 for this tanks. Wow!! Nice find Leo.
I have stopped collecting Lego Minifigures. leokimvideo The hysteria around the Disney figures is baffling. They are sold out everywhere and fetching high prices on eBay and Gumtree. It's getting mad out there!
Went to my local Myer. All 4 boxes in storeroom purchased by one person, sold out in all stores. Dare say there will be a Mr Gold Mickey Mouse Minifigure next...you heard it here first.
which is better cobi or Oxford?
In the UK at smyths toys it’s £30
Leokimvideo as a Titanic expert I know this fact like the back of my hand ( Dont mean to brag sorry if ofended. Also my spelng is amasing ) so anyway the 4th funnel had no smoke because it was a dummy funnel and was used for storeage and ventilation and white star line put it there because it made the ship look bigger hope this helped :)
Leo so do you know the movie
the titanic`s funnel was not steaming .because it was for smoke avowlation from the kitchens
I got the Oxford titanic set in smiths toys for 39.99
The reason the forth funnel has no smoke is the forth funnel was a dummy funnel look it up its true
Didn't LEGO produce a war themed set long long ago and they got in a bit of trouble?
Lego did do a Toy Story war theme set. I showed that and spoke about that set in the argument that Lego have done war sets. I bought it in the bargain bin because it was not popular. Some of the Indiana Jones sets were also hovering close to war themes. I dare say those Indiana jones sets are worth big bucks now.
Grandiose, Best Regards!
The final funnel was a hospital and kitchen STOP SAYING IT WAS DECORATION
The ship only needed 3 funnels the 4 one was just for show tho make its look bigger
It wasn't &40, I got $40 off $199 because I was stuffed around at the point of sale. Angry customers get big discounts.
+leokimvideo ya true angry customers get discount but still I want some thing like that a rc titanic
great job
i would pay $150 CAD maximum before taxes for this set
It was Titanic that sunk not Olympic, although they where the same class of ship, they where built to different designs, Titanic was slightly longer the Olympic
The fourth stack was a dummy cuz they just wanted the ship to look bigger and look better
the 4th funnel dosent have any engens under it
yes
No it was to make it look better
Dude... You can get it on aliexpress for 40 dollars.... The Titanic... Oxford.
Hey leo are you a fan of titanic ???? And have you seen the movie? And grate video
leo,i have that titanic now,and i built it aleardy
The 4th funnel was a fake model to make the ship look grander and better :D
for that price I would pay for if it was America and it would be perfect for me cause I'm a Titanic fan know everything about her and how she sank
DID YOU KNOW THAT THE TITANIC WAS MADE IN BELFAST YAY IM CLEVER
The fourth funnel was kinda fake it was use as ventilation and a ladder leading down to the boiler rooms.
at 2:20 am she sank by an iceberg she split in half, tons of people died mostly men because " women and children first". and there wasn't enough lifeboats.
Yes, if only they put more lifeboats on and less funnels. It was a time of trying to impress and being bigger and better than anything else.
There was 3 ships all sisters olymic , titanic and Britannic and olymic was the first one to be built and then titanic and the last one to be Britannic and as for why olymic don't help the titanic was she was in dry dock under going repairs form a run in with a ship
i gawt it for £40, which, when converted, is around $80
I LOVE IT
I've never seen anything like this in the toy stores.
TheNw1218 they are considered inappropriate.
The forth smoke stake is a dummy stake. The cigarette smoking room is under it thou.
The titanic sunk because they were trying to find the key to lock the unsinkable part of the boat they could not find the key so they hit the iceberg and it sunk
I saw the movie I am a fan of you
i love titanic because it make me sad
what about tugs?
That sank!
Oh ok
Oxford is big in South Korea
Yeah, big price from that South Korea ebay seller as well!
the last funnel is soposed to be like that
+leokimvideo the 4th funnel of the titanic was fake b'cuz they the people thought that 4 would look better than 3.
cool this is good
on aliexpress it is 37
