After shooting with the A7II for a month in Spain and Portugal along with the DX100m3 my wife and I came home to
California a found your two part review of the former both entertaining and educational, confirming some of our
observations as well as explaining some of the mystery that remained after our experience, other reviews and the
less than bare bones Sony documentation. Thanks for doing such detailed, organized and exemplary work - and by that
I mean showing examples through the lens and menu selections point by point. What a nice change from the talking head
reviews and tutorials almost everywhere else. Also, the music was not disruptive, it was quite nice.... really about the best
rendition for the stunning visual tutorial. The comment about the music was abusive and rude IMHO. Last, I agree that
there needs to be constant improvement in the usability and firmware but that is what Sony and the other great companies
pioneering the all digital camera market are so good at. I and they also benefit by the judgement and effort shown in your thoughtful,
thorough and generous reviews.
No one does such detailed reviews like Maarten, watching his videos is a pure joy.
Valère that's very kind, thank you for commenting.
Damn. Probably the best review I've seen on this camera. Comprehensive, and taught me a little about it! I have been trying to decide what to purchase, and seeing this helped significantly! Thanks!
It's a pleasure to read your kind words, thanks for taking the time to comment.
did u bought the camera :-\?
One again the most extensive review of a camera on the web, the amount of detail and specs you cover in 20min is astonishing. The story board and images/video you share are very nice…..Clearly the leading camera reviewer on the web today from my perspective. Keep up the good work.
Peter Ratsch I value your opinion highly, so I'm very appreciative of your kind words - thanks for viewing and thanks for commenting.
You conduct the best camera reviews I have ever had the pleasure of watching. Thank you for your professionalism as well as the temper of your presentation.
I greatly appreciate your kind words, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Very detailed, bar none best review I've seen on RUclips. Why are you not more popular?
Chaoticlimbs You're making me blush. Thanks for the kind words.
Thank you so much for this amazing review Mr. Heilbron! I can't believe that I've never come across your videos before - you are by far the best reviewer I've ever come across and I will soon be purchasing an A7II!
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words.
Hey, some reviewer make a kind of "show" out of the review business, but your review is just so full of valuable information and so well done. Thank your for your effort!
+Bernhard Ess Thank you, I certainly appreciate your kind comment - that's nice to hear.
I have fallen in love with my a7II all over again after watching your review. Thank you so much.
That's very nice to hear, thanks for commenting - and enjoy.
That's probably the best RUclips camera review i've ever seen. Well done. I've owned this camera for a few months now and I learned a few new things I never knew about. I would love to see you do a review on the just released A7RII
Cheyne Wallace Wow, that's very nice of you to say. I'm flattered. I would also love to see me to that review, I've asked to be put on the review list.
What a great review. You make everything easy to understand even for beginners. Keep up the good work!
***** What a kind thing to say - thank you very much! (It's kind of like show and tell in grade school.)
Even though i have no interest in cameras... These are good, full, indepth reviews and you deserve more subscribers.
Mikebahuado That's very kind, thanks for your comment.
Hello Maarten, this is one of the best review I have seen for Sony A7ii,
I just bought Sony A7ii with Zeus’s 24-70mm F4, and learning from guys like you, so thank you for the great work.
That's kind of you to say, thanks very much.
I'm glad you take the time to make these videos. Feels great to learn something new.
AlmightyNoah It's really my pleasure - both to make the video and to read your comment. Thanks.
Maarten, as usual another exceptionally well done review. I've had my A7M2 for a few weeks now and I find you're right on point with your comments, good job.
Now, you must get hold of the A7Rm2 for a review ASAP!
Kenneth Preston Thanks for your kind words. I've let Sony know that I'm interested in reviewing this model.
The quality of this review is outstanding! Subscribed!
Austin Burgin Thank you very much, that's kind of you to say.
Will be getting an A7II at the end of this month. It's still relevant to me, as I shoot adapted vintage glass exclusively. After viewing this, I'm confident it will provide a welcome step up in IQ and features over my venerable NEX 6. Thanks so much for all your hard work preparing such an entertaining and informative review. It's easily the best and most comprehensive on the web. Cheers from Vancouver, BC!
Hello Vancouver. Say hi to my brother. And thank for your kind words, they are appreciated.
You are rock! At this age you can works on not only photography but also comments and video cuts for folks like us. Thank you and please keep your works up. I substituted already.
How kind of you to say, thanks for taking the time to comment, and for subscribing.
Great camera and great review Maarten!
DarGadgetZ I appreciate your kind words, thanks for watching and commenting.
I hardly know a thing about cameras but you are a great reviewer! You should continue doing reviews!
frankiefusion Thanks, I do try to keep the information at a level that provides value to both beginners and enthusiasts. I'll keep doing them as long as the camera manufacturers are willing to lend me gear to review.
This is an incredibly well done review. Definitely have my subscription.
Best review on RUclips, just like always.
It was a pleasure to read your kind words. Thanks!
Always enjoy your work, I see more Sony videos in your future since Sony today announced 3 updated cameras, RX100 IV, RX10II, a7RII, all with 4k video internally, even the pocketable one, amazing. I know it takes some time, I'll be looking out for your notifications, have a great day.
sski66 I know, right? Sony is certainly keeping me busy. Sony Canada hasn't even announced these yet, but I'll contact them today to see what their time frame might be for these models.
***** Sounds great!
Such a great review ... thank you! I just purchased the A7ii, and coming over from Canon, have been relying on reviews more than I typically do, in order to get familiar with an unfamiliar layout. This helped tremendously!
Only been a couple of days, but I'm loving the camera so far!
Thank you for commenting, it's always nice to hear that my videos have been useful.
Your pictures make me miss Toronto where I lived for a year a few years ago. Great review btw, helped me a lot for choosing this camera.
Thanks for the kind words, always appreciated- let’s go for coffee when you’re in Toronto.
Great review, and amazing pictures. I appreciate all the info you provide, not only to the actually functionality of the camera, but also in regard to the "feel" of the camera. Very useful! Thanks, and keep it up!
David Anderson Thanks for the kind words. I'm very concerned with usability - if I were starting my career today, I would certainly be working in the area of customer experience. There are lots of technical and quality analysis reviews, and although I don't want to overlook those aspects, I try to concentrate try on how easy it is to use, and how useful the features/functions are.
The best review for this camera ever!
+Iago Seara That's very kind of you to say - thanks!
Extremely helpful even after 5 years .. saw a big discount on the camera and therefore bought it hope to receive it in few days.
Glad it helped, always nice to read that viewers appreciate my videos.
Oh, another terrific review MH! Just Monday I noted on one of your previous Post that I had not heard from ya in a while. Well the wait was worth it! I have an A6000, thinking about moving up to the A7MII or to the Nikon D750, I have old glass for both bodies. And by the way, I was in Ottawa for the first time for the Tulip festival, t'was fantastic. Maarten, your reviews are entertaining, the honesty and quality of your research comes over in spades. Thank ya!
Rick Mentore That's very kind, thank you! It does take time to prepare these as I both learn the camera and then identify scenes and opportunities to field test the various features. This review (now in 3 parts) took over two weeks to edit. I'd really love to do more cameras, and I've tried to be faster, but it doesn't work. Sorry I missed you in Ottawa. Next year?
Thank you for the kind words, always appreciated.
Great reviews! It definitely shows you put a great deal of time and effort into your videos! Keep up the good work!
PD663 I appreciate your kind words, and you're right, it's a lot of time and effort. I'll do my best to continue to earn your praise.
THANK YOU SIR! YOU'RE AWESOME! Had my camera for like 4 months now and I've learned so many things that I had no clue what it can do :D
I'm always happy to hear that a viewer has found good information in my video. Thanks for writing - appreciate the kind words.
I got a problem. Can you please help me, for some reason I can't click the Creative style on my camera. It always says "This operation or setting not available as follows Shoot mode/Intelligent Mode" ....How should the settings be so I can disable those buttons? I can't either click the picture effect or the ISO button.
Turn the dial on top to "P".
***** oh thank you so much! Took me like an hour searching on the internet about it!
Always my pleasure.
Excellent review -- applicable to real life situations and clearly not completely for or against the camera just based on brand name. Subscribed!
Thanks for the kind words, and your subscription, both are appreciated.
i love using my Sony A6000 with one of those soviet Jupiter 37A portrait lens. perfect combination i say and even a helios 44-3 is lovely. nice review, infact the best review on a7ii i say. i was about to upgrade to a7ii and i needed to know more so very informative of you
Thanks for your comments and your kind words - always nice to hear from my viewers.
I'm undecided whether to buy this camera now or wait for the next upgrade, which hopefully, will address some of the shortcomings you mentioned. However, your review has been very informative and really helpful. Thank you so much!
Thanks for taking the time to comment, I appreciate the kind words. I hope so too.

Great reviews. Keep it up Maarten!
Jake Jo Jo Thanks for the kind words.
Love you reviews keep making them!!
preston porter Thanks, I intend to keep making them. Trouble is, it takes time ... but hopefully two weeks to the next one.
Other reviews should consider this review as a guidance for making reviews.
I really like this video :) its details, filming, editing etc...

this is great, have been looking into the A711. seems like a great camera
fozzarz It's a workhorse, with the right lens and accessories, great for all kinds of still and video projects.
Wow, really really good review. Great Job!
I appreciate the kind words.
This is much more than a review...it’s a tutorial really. 🙏
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words.
Great review, keep up the good work.
Fantastic reviews.. subscribed
JWitt30 That's kind of you to say, and I hope I live up to your expectations.
+Maarten Heilbron I come from a small village near Heilbronn, BW, Germany. Do your ancestors come from there? Maarten sounds Dutch to me.
+Dick Brett Somehow there must be a connection, but it's been lost in history. My family is from the north east of Holland, quite near the German border, I was born in Amsterdam but now live in Toronto.
Great review, and very informative. Thanks for sharing
+David Nicoll I appreciate your kind words, thanks.
This was a NICE review!
Your kind words are appreciated.
Excellent review. So professional and a joy to watch. Contrasts markedly with another so-called respected reviewer, who was negative and struck an unpleasant note in his dismissive, and arrogant review of this camera.
Thank you for your kind words.
You have great videos. Keep up the good work.
***** That's very generous of you to say, thanks - I will keep up the good work.
nice video! you really put some effort in your videos and it paid off imo!
ill sub you and im looking forward to see more reviews in this quality ;)
This is like a show.. nice quality review
Popsiclestick27 That's very kind of you to say, thanks.
Great review! Thanks for the video.
Very kind of you to say, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Fantastic review, my friend!
ScusemuaGaming With those kind words, thanks for counting me among your friends.
Great review, in fact best review of the A7II I've seen. I bought one in 2015 wanting a full frame sensor in a more compact body. While this camera is a truly great all-rounder, I'm somewhat disappointed by the zoom lens options. I was drawn to the quality in a smaller size idea and find that only prime lenses (such as the 28mm you mention, the f/2.8 35mm, etc.) are keeping the whole package small. The kit zoom lens (you mention in passing) while light, just doesn't keep up with the camera's sensor. I'm hoping for something like the A6000's 16-50mm small lens, but full frame. That would make a truly perfect full frame package for me. However until then I'm really enjoying this camera with its small prime lenses.
+John Roberts That's so kind of you to say, thanks for taking the time to comment. Maybe the 24-70 doesn't have the range you'd like (24-105 would be ideal), but I've been very pleased with that as a walkabout. The primes are all exceptional, but I'm always nervous changing lenses as the sensor seems to attract dirt and doesn't have the "protection" that a DSLR with a mirror does. There have been several articles recently about the fact that physics keeps the overall size of the system (lens plus camera) about the same as cameras with mirrors.
i have an Olympus e-420. i think it's time i trade mine in for one of these badboys. good review.
Haukenslush I thank you for your kind comment, appreciated.
Fantastic unbiased review, as I am on the fence as to go the sony route or upgrade to a full frame Nikon.
+Michael Powell I'm working on a review of the D750, so give me a few weeks. I'd say if you're shooting video, the Sony is the better choice. However, if you are a Nikon fan, have Nikon lenses and are familiar with DLSR operation - you may be happier with what you already know.
+Maarten Heilbron Thank you so much, yeah definitely on the fence as I have a Nikon D80 with four lenses (two of which are full frame) I shoot portrait, event, and lifestyle - however since the beginning of the year I've really gotten into hiking and climbing, so you guessed it, lots of landscape photography and was weighing out my options as far as something light weight - I am overdue to upgrade so just doing the research. Thank you again.
+Michael Powell Unless you're stuck on full frame, try the Sony A6000 - small, inexpensive, light, lots of the same features as the A7 series.ruclips.net/video/hkBnze9wUQU/видео.html
+rfe777 There are a lot of choices. If you're shooting video, take the A7M2, for stills it's harder to make the choice. Nikon D750 - hopefully next week.
+Maarten Heilbron Awesome looking forward to that review, at this point I'm leaning towards the Nikon as I have many lenses and know the system, now I'm looking into harnesses for when I take it out into the wild :)
Great video. Thanks for all the efford.
gustavo campos Thanks for the kind words, I had a lot of fun doing it.
Best review on SonyA7ii as of now. Now i am feeling good about buying SonyA7ii. Could you please let me know how to switch between AF and MF quickly ?
+Ravi Kumar That's very kind of you to say, thanks. By default, the C2 custom button selects Focus Mode - so press C2 then up (if you're in auto) or down (if you're in manual) to switch. You could also use the function menu but that require navigation to get to focus mode.
You are literally a fucking hero. I don't know why this video is so great. I love you. Subscribed
Joseph Schoeneman I appreciate your admiration and love. I wish you knew why it was great so I could emphasize that aspect in future reviews. Thanks for subscribing!
Can you please explain why a digital camera has a mechanical shutter? I only worked with 35mm and cheap digital camera. Thank you. Great review!
wilson solt I appreciate your kind words. Cameras with electronic shutters have a lag as the sensor is scanned from top to bottom creating distortion - it's worst on fast moving images at high shutter speeds. Test it yourself by snapping images of cars going by - the top of the object (the car) will be offset from the bottom. The mechanical shutter eliminates this effect. It's likely more pronounced on larger sensors at slower shutter speeds. A google search will provide some sample images.
I loved the video! I did think the background music got a little repetitive though.
guitarsilove Thanks for the kind comment. If you watch the other two videos related to this camera on my channel, they don't have music.
Excellent review for the camera and lenses. You put a lot of information into the video. Some great cameras released lately that can be long term purchases.Maybe you could find a lonely Leica Q for review!,Thank you.
Zawnguy Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate that. I'll put it on the to-do list.
Love your videos!
Amy Nicole Thank you very much!
Bedankt Maarten, but I have to agree w/ a previous comment that the 4 bars of guitar repeated ad nauseam became very hard to bear.
Stef Hendrik Niets te danken. I think you're being a bit harsh ... but I am rethinking my use of background music.
Hi Maarten, another fantastic review :-) Always look forward to your videos :-) I was wondering if you could do a review on Sony A7R II. I am really interested in getting one. Would love your take on it. Thanks
+Parminder Bedi Thank you for the kind words. I'd love to, and t's on my todo list, but it's becoming increasingly difficult to arrange for the loan of Sony models.
Great review many thanks..
Always my pleasure, thanks for the kind words.
Maybe is to late for saying but your review make me happy to buy this camera on lately of this 2018
Thank you for your kind words, appreciated,
I'm considering this camera... i have to try it first.
Yes, it's good to hold it in your hand, to make sure it will work for you.
Great Review as always. Thanks. Will you recommend this or Fuji XT2 today if Landscape and Portraits is what I do.?
Both are good choices - it depends on your preferences and style.
Great video! I like it a lot! Thank you!
What a pleasure to read your kind words, thanks.
Wow you really are one serious shooter thanks
Thanks, I appreciate your kind words.
Hi, in your openion can i use this camara as good wedding camera. in compare with 5d mark 3....... thanks
+Kaleshkumar R If you already own a 5Dm3 I wouldn't trade it in. Otherwise, and particularly for shooting both video and stills, and assuming you're including the right portfolio of lenses (and other accessories like flash and battery grip) for a wedding shoot, the A7m2 is an excellent choice.
Thanks sir...
And one more dought sir...what about the quality of stills between mark 3 vs 7 ll
+Kaleshkumar R I haven't review the mark 3, so can't really say. I'd use either dpreview or dxomark to judge the specifics of that question.
Mr. Heilbron, could you suggest a camera in the sub 200$ price range? I am not very good at taking pictures and will mostly use it for family events. Great video by the way. Thank you.
Dave I'm sorry, I have no experience in that category. I pretty much assume that they're all the same. Go with a brand name and one you'll be happy to find on your bedside table in the morning.
Thank you for taking the time to respond. Your youtube videos are great.
Dave It's my pleasure, and please call me Maarten - and thank you so much for the kind words.
very good. your mention of '2 flavours of auto' - do /did you use these ?- in examples?
I'm a late adopter of theA7II, and I find s.auto superb - its image layering is a fast HDR bonus, it seems.using CIZ(ANOHER 'industry best', like its s.panorama mode. the feature set I wanted, in a compact format.. well done you and Sony!
Thanks for the kind words, appreciated. I did use them - but did not note which was used for which image. One of Sony's shortcomings is that the actual file name is not visible during image review.
is there eye AF in AFC mode or only in AFS. ? and will it Eye AF outside small frame - I think you said no Silent shooting
You always do great reviews
That was a while ago, if it's not in the review, I honestly don't remember.
Hello Maarten, I hate to bother you with questions but I sincerely value your opinions and expertise. I’m considering buying the 90mm f/2.8 macro lens (for the Sony A7-2) and I would like your opinion, it will be mainly for headshots and yes, to play with the macro taking photos of bugs (LOL). Since I’m not a professional and I only do this for fun after work and on the weekends, I have time to buy it, I heard that Sony is coming out with new lenses in the beginning of 2016. Should I wait, or just buy it. Thank you.
Rick.
+RickBSO Always happy to help, please ask away. I'm pretty sure that Sony will deliver on the rumoured lenses, so if there's one that better suits your purpose and you're not in a hurry, wait. I have no experience with that lens (check with dpreview or dxomark), but I am very happy with the 35mm crop e-series macro lens (I use it for the closeups of camera dials etc. in my videos) - which would give you the opportunity to play with macro at a lower price point. Of course, that would not provide the full frame resolution of the A7M2.
+Maarten Heilbron
Thanks again Maarten, you don’t know how lucky you are that you reside in Canada and I’m in south Florida, if you were my neighbor I would be constantly ringing your door bell asking questions (LOL).
Rick.
+RickBSO I know how lucky I am to reside in Canada, but I'd be happy to have you as a neighbour - ask away. And if you find yourself in Toronto let me know and we'll go for a photo walk and a coffee. ruclips.net/video/-Gl2zS90Ggg/видео.html
+Maarten Heilbron Thank you Marteen, for the invite and the advise, and the same here, if you ever decide to became a “snow bird” and visit Florida please let me know, it will be my pleasure to show around.
Rick.
+RickBSO That's very kind of you to offer - I'll keep that in mind.
What happen to the Pic's round about the 10min mark? Uhhh we call it "Augenkrebs".
Sir Marteen, awesome review. All my gears are nikon and I shoot portraits, basketball games and lanscapes. I am planning explore wildlife during my next vacation, I love the flexibility and features of sony a7ii but only worry is will if keep up the AF against nikon d750? Kindly let me know
Bobby Mathiwathanan I've not reviewed the D750, so can't compRe directly, but I did fed the autofocus on the A7M2 to be fast and capable, with a god range of focus options.
Great vid explanation!! Actually, where did you get the orange strap? Thank you!!
I appreciate the kind words, thanks. I found it in a bargain bin at Vistek. It's since disappeared, so I can't even tell you the brand. Sorry.
Hi Maarten, I been a follower of your for a couple years now, and I must say - you do an exceptional job on reviews. I do have a question this time, with the US price dropped to $998.00 with kit lens I was wondering if you would choose this above D5600 with 18-140 kit, Canon M5 or M50 with Kit and 22mm f2.0 for the same prices? Let me throw in the fact that I have the Sony 85mm f1.8 FE lens as I got it from a friend for cheap and was looking to resale it or use it on the A7ii for portraits of my toddler. Cheers and Thanks
With the lens, the decision seems easy. Not sure that the others offer more or better quality or functionality.
Again kudos for review
+Pier Giorgio Zuccaro Very kind of you to say.
I'm not a photographer, not even an amatuer photographer. I really like your review, Is there any Bridge camera that you have been reviewed (I like bridge camera since it's easy to use and can do a little or more than point-and-shoot type, but not too hard learn)? I can't find anywhere in your channel. Would love your though on a good bridge camera. Thanks in advance.
ChuangJ I'm not totally sold on the concept of bridge cameras, or really feel that they deserve a separate designation. Which models are you thinking about - maybe I could add them to my todo list, although I'll warn you that I don't work terribly quickly. :-(
What "bridge" represents for me is an auto mode that works well for occasions when you don't want to be bothered, yet provides control when you do. The following cameras all have great auto modes, and can be used in full manual mode when needed. I'd recommend the Sony A3000, which I feel is an excellent starter camera in the DSLR style, Nikon 1 series cameras, Sony RX100 models, the Panasonic LX100 or the Canon G7X. Fuji also makes some interesting models, but unless you're about to be passionate about photography, or love the design (count me in on both) they may not be as accessible. I hope this helps.
Thanks a lot for your reply and suggestion. I guess I will have to do more research on this then. Your recommend looks really great.
What I want to know is the review for these kind of cameras, Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ70 16.1.
I just saw a few videos where they show the power zoom with this type of cameras. With that powerzoom, it can allow me to shoot some nice photos with some new perspectives. (not sure if you understand or not). I love hiking and I like the idea of carrying a single camera where you can capture flowers/bee/insects and also at the same time be able to zoom in at the birds on that branch of the oak tree.
ChuangJ Sadly, another category (superzooms) where I'm not very familiar. My friend who is a superzoom aficionado loves the Nikons, and has for several years - he's tried others but ends up back with the latest Nikon.
***** Thank you, I will keep that in mind.
Hi Maarten, I found your channel very interesting and your reviews very precise!!!
My question is: I have a Fujifilm x100s, what is the best camera to upgrade, the Sony A7mii or the fujifilm x100t?
thanks a lot, and cheers from Argentina!!!
Leonel Saya Between those two I would suggest the Sony is the more flexible, capable choice. However, the right camera for you is the one that makes you proud to own it, happy to be seen with it and you'll never leave at home. Both are high quality devices that take great photos - let your heart be your guide.
***** Thanks a lot, I guess the sony being Full frame should deliver best image quality photographs, and interchangeable lenses is a plus too...
Thanks a lot Maarten!!!
Leonel Saya All good factors to consider, although I would not be overly swayed by full frame.
In this video there are a number of pictures of some Dutch festival. Which festival is it?
Yuhan Shao The pictures of people were at the Dutch Liberation Festival held on May 2nd in Toronto. The pictures of the tulips are from the Ottawa Tulip Festival May 15/16. More details at maartech.com.
