  • This is a fine piano, in many aspects of design similar to Steinway, which prompted me to ask the question of why they can be so similar when Steinway seems to have so many patents. Any comments are most welcome!

Mason and Hamlin built inccredible instruments. I own this piano's younger sibling. 1926 RA #35172. It is a great piano.

Mason & Hamlin aren't known much here in the UK but their instruments in USA are first rank. Morley's knew what they were doing and anything associated with them can be relied upon to be first class. Superb instrument. With Steinways being made in the USA there would have been transfer of ideas and knowledge between the manufacturers.

Mason & Hamlin invented the Tension Resonator which preserves the shape of the wood frame and the soundboard. The newer ones also use a carbon-fiber action made by an outside company Wessell and Gross (if my memory serves me well).

Mini American pianists and performers prefer Mason in hamlet for their wonderful sound. They also have that unusual resonator under the soundboard which I believe makes the difference. I own a Steinway O fully restored . I may be downsizing in the next few years and I am asked my technician located here in New England to keep his eye out for Mason and Hamlin as I believe I prefer them. I thoroughly enjoy your videos and I’m always glad when there’s a new one. Thank you so much.

Glorious instrument quite nearly like the one my grandmother, a serious pianist & teacher, cherished for many years. To aid in her piano studies her father bought her one new in 1924 for her 16th. To this day, it sets the bar for excellence in tone and touch for my own ears and fingers. These instruments of this period are the finest works of art.

MH are a wonderful piano. I prefer them to the "S" brand which are wonderful pianos too!

Mason & hamlin is an American piano. Not sure but i am not sure how rare/common they are in the uk. Mason falls in the same line as the NY steinways with the American piano design; use of Hardrock Maple/ other hardwoods native to North America and the like.I am not sure about this but my guess is that the reason the Mason seems so similar to Steinway is due to the fact that the steinways (NY ones) are based of the traditional American design as I have elaborated above, (Charles R. Walter pianos fall in a similar vein) and as such follow a similar design philosophy to produce a similar tonal profile. my 2 cents. not a piano tech but a pianist.
