Also I just want to explain something that I think is confusing to a lot of fans. And that’s the difference between the Lisan al-gaib, and the Kwisatz Haderach. The KH is the real chosen one title. That is the “chosen one” of the Bene Gesserit. The first male Bene Gesserit, who can see both past and future. (On top of that Paul has been groomed to be a political leader and warrior all his life as well). It’s the result of their centuries long breeding program. The water of life is the final thing that unlocks his power. It allows him to see past memories, and crystal clear potential futures. He is the leader that the Bene Gesserit want in power so that he can steer the Imperium in a better direction (they hope to control him as well). The Lisan al-gaib is the fable that the BG planted on Arrakis thousands of years ago (they do this on many planets). It is a made up story that BG’s can use to their benefit if they ever need to. It’s a narrative that they planted to use as a tool to manipulate the Fremen. That’s why Jessica knows exactly what the gameplan is for manipulating them into believing the prophecy.

I don't know why this is so complicated for so many people to understand that prophecy isn't a real thing when it's made apparent so many times throughout both films that it's all manipulation... The Bene Gesserit planted superstitious beliefs on primitive worlds based on what they knew the Kwisatz Haderach would be capable of (prescience, surviving the poison, knowing the weirding way, etc.) in order to be able to have their full servitude when their genetically designed ultimate being comes along. This was entirely meant to make the point about religion being a mean of control. Of course, Jessica threw a wrench in their plan by having a son instead of a daughter and precipitated events out of the Bene Gesserit's control. Still, in the end, Paul subjugates the Fremen to his will knowing that it's wrong to accomplish his revenge and give the Fremen victory in this one moment in time, yes, and that may seem like a fair trade... but long term, this is a great loss for them and Arrakis. The terraforming of Arrakis into a "green paradise" will have dire consequences and, with the struggle of survival removed, the Fremen culture will never be the same.

Chani was specifically upset about Paul leaning into the role of Messiah because she knows her people are vulnerable to that sort of rhetoric and she has expressed as much toward Paul. Even the Bene Gesserit traits and the Spice quirks are all within a sci-fi realm of tangibility. For all we know everything that is happening has been created by design by people with great premonition abilities. People who have evolved to the year 10190+ may have significantly more powerful abilities from genetic cultivation in combination with the sandworm's excretions and its impact on the human biology.

Paul literally mentioned that the poison can be negated as his own mother was trained to resist the poison. His mother literally mention he's not dead unlike what the scriptures say. While in the eyes of fundamentalists, it did confirm it.

Aside from the minor omissions and stuff not entirely clarify from the novel, there is *2 major changes from the novels, and not entirely bad or without good reason.* Chani has a major character change because in the book she is quite on-board with the idea of messiah. *But the change is good,* mainly because to the author dismay, most people even while reading the book, didn't realized that Paul wasn't the 'hero' of the story, he was suppose to be the 'warning' regarding charismatic leaders. So the author made it clearer in later books, but if they didn't make future movies, there would be no counter-message. And the change also gave Chani a lot more agency.
*The 2nd major change was Paul's sister, Alia of the Knife.* She was suppose to be 2 years old during the final battle (which took longer to happen) and she was the one who kill her grandfather. Because she was a 'pre-born' (a mostly very bad thing in the Dune universal), you will end up with a 2 year old running around wielding knives (the reason she got her name), cutting down people. Which would be difficult to make happen even with the best CGI. But the change creates another problem... since aside from "What have we done" from the dying Holy Mother, it was never made clear that 'pre-born' aka Abomination, is a bad thing. So foolish conservatives seem to think the movie has a 'pro-life' message (because the fetus speaks), it does not. What happen to the fetus was something Bene Gesserit are suppose to avoid, without going into why, what Jessica did was terrible. Most of them a terrible people and are suppose to be terrible people.

As a conservative who has talked about the pro-life argument regarding the film with my peers, I can say that most conservatives do not think the film had a deliberate pro-life message. More so we were just glad that the film acknowledged that a fetus was a human being. The tragedy that befalls Alia while she was still a fetus is distinctly different from the clear fact that, as a fetus, she is still her own human being. That may seem to many a dumb thing to be glad about, but frankly, there are still many people who do not view a fetus as a human being. Thusly, the depiction of the humanity of Alia (even before she became an abomination) was a positive thing to see with a pro-life bend, even if the message was unintentional.

@@mikedawg45 That's kind of the thing. How many of your circles of peers can there be, so it is hardly 'most'. But more importantly, conservative media circles, including those on youtube, love advocating how pro-conservatives it is. And as far as US politics goes... the narrative matters, more people are sway by ridiculous narratives then you think. To be honest, the 'pro-life' movement aren't strong in most developed or developing countries precisely because the narrative is the strongest in the US. Also... the reason Abominations are so bad is precisely because the normal fetus isn't suppose to have that level of mental function, whether anyone think them human being or otherwise, Bene Gesserit certainly don't, only those who pass the Gom Jabbar are human. While the water of life changes that, the fetus is elevated without a developed personality, therefore easily overwritten... the elevated new conscious practically relies entirely on ancestral knowledge to function at all. The only reason Alia and other abominations gets to 'develop' a personality of their own is because the other ancestral personality have to fight it out.

In the novel, Chani and Jessica are allies supporting Paul as he leads the Fremen. However, Denis Villeneuve decided that the warning against messianic figures was not strong enough, so he rewrote the part. One of the best scenes in the novel is when Jessica and Chani discuss the necessity of a political marriage between Paul and Irulan. He then tells her that though the two of them will be remembered historically as concubines, they were each the true love of their man (Leto and Paul).

    A few interesting theological references:
In Islamic theology, Jesus spoke in the cradle in a very similar fashion as Paul's sister. Even more similar to the book version. It was the first miracle he performed and it was used as proof for Mary's virgin birth claim.
The title of Mehdi is also found in Islamic theology. During the end times, while the anti-Christ is roaming the world, there will be a religious figure referred to as Mehdi fighting against him with his army. The second coming of Jesus will then occur and the defeat of the anti-Christ by Jesus himself.
Al-Ghaib is an arabic/Islamic term that refers to the unseen world. God, heaven, hell, djinns, etc.
I'm sure there are tons more but these are the ones I can remember off the top of my head.

it's not really about Chani having a "broken heart." Paul is a false messiah. He's a plant of the Bene Gesserit in order to take power. She is mad because her people are following a false messiah. He says in Part One that he has to marry the emporor's daughter in order to get close and get his revenge. It's all a ploy, they spend the entire movie trying to con the "sand people" lol, in order to get power. Paul is reluctant but embraces the dark siide. Paul becomes Darth Vader. Chani is mad cause her people are now following a power hungry guy cause they are desparate for freedom from. Chani is convinced the Fremen need to free themselves otherwise they are just slaves to the Atreides leader now.

Paul knows the golden path is full of death and tyranny for millennia but a better future forward, he won't have the courage eventually, so the God Emperor (his son has to do his dirty work for him.) Same concept as FOundation. Seldon plan. A few thousand years to avoid many more thousand years of bad time.

Except in the books, the only reason Paul rises to power among the Fremen is because Chani is the daughter of the former leader. Her devout support is what allowed him to establish his power over all the people who didnt believe in the prophecy, of which there were many among the Fremen. Not to mention she killed Paul's opponents on her own without even him telling her to. Movie Chani is just a caricature of some third party moral arbiter. Her character would have made more sense in this direction if they made her never fall in love with him in the movies.
Also, the Fremen are tired of living on a harsh desert planet and long for a "green paradise" Paul gives them that when the planet is mostly terraformed except for a small part that serves as a worm reservation. The Fremen helping to make Paul Atreides emperor got their greatest wish made into reality. Theres no false messiah in that regard. Not to mention the whole preventing the extinction of humanity.

    • @SteveNathn

I don’t think you could say he’s a “false messiah”. The Bene Gesserit set up that religion precisely for the scenario Paul is in, only that the Bene Gesserit never expected the Lisan Al Gaib to ALSO be the Kwisatz Hederach. The only way he’s a “false messiah” is by saying it’s a false religion, but hey, most of them are anyway 😉 But yeah Chani is mad because she realizes they are being manipulated and following a power hungry fella, like you said (even though you could argue he didn’t really have a choice, and billions would die with or without him, once he got connected with the fremen)

The way I saw that scene where he's at the Southern Tribe is that they already believe in his potential as the prophet but him doing what he did at the council was a power move on his part to make sure there's absolutely no doubt in the Fremen. After his exposure to the water of life he realized he needed to lean into his role as the prophet (even though he was hesitant before and Chani did not want him to). His visions at this point are guiding him more than his emotions.

On the Water of Life and Paul: I have a reasonable theory about the duality of his prophecy and the Bene Gesserit manipulation.
People often forget, he is a male Bene Gesserit, and has received a lot of training from his mother of the Weirding Ways (Bene Gesserit stuff). He himself in the movie said that advanced Bene Gesserit can transmute toxins in the body to be non-lethal. The Water of Life is also the purest form of spice melange you can get, and Paul is sensitive to, and has been exposed to spice for a long time at this point.
Aside from being symbolic, I don't think it mattered that it was Chani's tears. He already was capable of surviving it, and a tiny bit of the Water of Life was enough to shock therapy him from Coma.
Jessica was just being manipulative, and knowing that Chani is part of the prophecy via her precognition, she just used her to affirm everyone, even the viewers of the movie and the reader that Paul is the one.
The jigsaw puzzles have aligned but people forgot that jigsaw puzzles are manufactured, and it's up to the player to complete the puzzle.

16:29 It is explained in more detail in the book. To avoid a nuclear war, it is forbidden to use nuclear weapons against people. If Paul had used atomic weapons against the Harkonnen or the Emperor, the other houses would be obliged by law to respond by attacking Paul with their own atomics. That is why he only uses them to destroy the mountain that surrounds the city, allowing the worms to pass through.
27:40 The Fremen religion is an invention of the Bene Gesserit. They have been crossing genetic lines for centuries to obtain the Kwisatz Haderach, a man capable of using the abilities of the Bene Gesserit, but much more powerful, and their ultimate goal is to put him on the throne (although obviously under their influence. Paul, despite being the Kwisatz Haderach, is not controlled by the BG, that's why they want to get rid of him). To ensure that everywhere in the Universe the Kwisatz Haderach is accepted as ruler, they have been creating messianic religions among the native populations of the different planets so that when he arrives, he will be accepted as their savior. Paul takes advantage of these beliefs established by the Bene Gesserit to manipulate the Fremen and make them follow him.

Something that they couldn't explain in the movies, is that making any kind of technology that performs the function of the human mind, is completely forbidden by their religion. This because of a rebellion thousands of years before where humanity overthrew the Mechs that had enslaved us (this is still thousands of years before our current timeline). Which is why schools of humanity had to evolve to be able to perform those functions. The Bene Gesserit sisterhood have complete body control. Ovulating on demand, and being able to control every aspect of their body chemistry. This is the source of their powers.

One of the things to realize is that the Kwisatz Haderach wasn't supposed to be born yet in this generation. The carefully laid out breeding plan of the Bene Gesserit was geared towards producing him in the next generation. This is why they wanted Jessica to produce a daughter, whom they would train and then cross breed with Feyd Rautha Harkonnen to produce the real Kwisatz Haderach. Or at least that was one of the possible ways to produce the KH, as they also had other prospects in the waiting in the wing. But by having a son, Jessica threw a wrench in the BG's plans, which ultimately lead the BG to try and weed out this potential line, by having the emperor destroy the Atreides with the help of the Harkonnen.
In the book it is also shown (from Paul's point of view) that he has moments when he can't see the outcome of certain decisions, its described like he is bobbing on top of a wave, with the wave front sometimes obscuring the path the decision will lead to. This is further proof that his powers aren't fully where the KH should be.

Ok, So for those who haven't read the book (for context)
The are going to do DUNE: Messiah which is book 2 in the series. DUNE: Part 2 is not really a sequel. It's just the second half of the first book
1 - The marriage between Paul and Princess Irulan is a political one only. There is no love there. That marriage is just to solidify his ascendancy claim
2 - So Paul REALLY is the in-universe Kwisatz Haderach (the genetically engineered super being) who the Bene Gesserit have been attempting to create/control. This is why the sisters who are sent off to marry men within the great houses are instructed on what gender of child to bare. The Bene Gesserit are technically witches/Sorceres who created the voice and through genetics and training, hope to create the male version of a Bene Gesserit - The Kwisatz Haderach. The reverend Mothers who have taken the water of life can only see "the beyond" through the eyes/minds of matriarcal bloodlines. But the Kwisatz Haderach can see both matriarcal and patriarchal bloodlines. The KW would basically make the need for spice pointless
3 - What Paul may or may not be is the Lisan Al Gaib (The promised Fremen Messiah). Thousands of years ago, the Bene Gesserit sent out missionaries to various planets in the imperium and basically "planted" the prophecy and after several millennia, the prophecy took on a life of itself. By the time Paul Atredies shows up, he fits the prophecy perfectly. The thing is that he actually *IS* the Kwisatz Haderach and by proxy of what being the KH is, that inevitably makes him Lisan Al Gaib. This is what a lot of people never understood. The Bene Gesserit weren't outside of the prophecy of the Lisan Al Gaib, they were inside of it. In the books you don't really meet any non believing Fremen until the latter part of DUNE: Messiah. In fact Chani is his greatest supporter and believer in the book.

25:33 It's a revelation to Paul but it's his secret. Paul would not tell Chani or any Fremen because he's manipulating them into supporting them. So for the story it wouldn't really make sense to tell them.

It's good we're getting Dune Messiah, but if the movies ended here I'd be happy. Dune was originally intended to be an open-ended standalone book, and it succeeds at that (just like these two films).
Edit: The problem is that Dune Messiah was nowhere near as well received as Dune or the later books, so it may be an uphill battle to get a Children of Dune film.

    • @zoesumra9152
      @zoesumra9152 20 часов назад

The book of Messiah wasn't as well received because it punctured everyone's perception of Dune. Now many people know that in advance, and Villeneuve (through Chani) lampshades the issues Herbert had to bang so hard in Messiah. The film might be less unpopular than the book.

I was wondering if you view of Paul Atreides as a hero or a villain? Do you foresee Paul Atreides future actions as being better or worse for the universe as he embarks on his holy war? Did you pick up on the concepts of how a collective can lay the groundwork for future control of a people and/or their leaders? Do you have any viewpoints on the originators of a prophecy and those believe the prophecy even at the expense of their own freedom and autonomy? Are prophecies revealed or are they created? Do you think the film intends to show a difference between the way those who rule and those who are ruled go about planning for the future? Have you done any research on the author's concerns about the reception to the first book and how that influenced the 2nd book?

The date of these movies is 20 000 years in the future....A LOT happened in this universe since our time....read the books: there are 6 books from Frank Herbert (1963-1985), here the movies is the first book. His son Brian Herbert continues the story, with Kevin J. Anderson, 2 books finishing the story based on Frank's notes. They did also prequels and filling books. Total 22 books in the Dune saga.
