I _loved_ that Matt decided all goliaths have cockney accents because of Travis' Grog voice.

Aidan Wedgbury that 47 stealth was from a Druid instead of a rouge though, so that’s interesting. If Vax roles a 47 people would hardly care.

it's absolutely impossible to roll 47... especially on this lvl without items that gives you bonuses to stealth... lvl 12 = +4 proficiency. Vax's dex is 20 = +5 modifier roll 20 + 5 + 8(I'm assuming he has expertise which doubles the proficiency he gets on rolls) + 10 (pass without trace) = 43 at the very max... even if he's lvl 13 which changes his proficiency to +5, maximum score he'd get is 45 when he rolls natural 20... I actually notice that very frequently that they get some insane numbers on rolls which makes it weird as hell.

All someone actually had to do was ask for names. Then as Grog was naming them off, use those fancy fingers to keep a count. Even if he didn't know everyone's name, he'd probably be like, "And there's that pricks mom, the one I told you cried like a baby when I smacked him? And her husband, who could drink anyone under the table...."

A small little detail that I found very sweet: when Vex goes up to Scanlan's room and asks him for help with the broom, he immediately lays off on the charm and gives her problem his full attention. It just goes to show how much they trust each other, despite their quirks.
SonofOrion42 I thought exactly the same thing. Scanlan can be crass and loves a laugh, but he really does care for his friends. I liked the previous conversation between Vax and Scanlan where he explains his attitude towards life. So good!

He does immediately make her confess, which is a fun dichotomy between his irreverent behaviour and his morale code.
Also when Grog doesn't want to go into the city so Scanlan volunteers to stay with him. He's a good guy.
@@Digbonicle to be fair he's been trying to change since kira. He only goes full scanlan silk sheets when he thinks Vex randomly asked to sleep with him.

How dramatic would it have been if Vax, when he heard Vex say that, pushed her off the broom and snapped it in half. It would've been perfect for his character to overly protect her after she died. Plus karmic retribution would've just been perfect
@@Dannydarko27 It would have been a dick move as a player though. A gamemate gets the ability to do something they love (flying), and someone else just takes it away because "my character would do that". Would not have been cool :/

Can we all just take a minute appreciate how the current story arc is simply a masterpiece? Matt has simultaneously created a huge, worldwide threat while tying together threads from throughout Vox Machina's entire history and personal backstories. He's filling in details that perhaps even the players didn't know while also connecting known things, tracing information and NPCs back and linking them to the current crisis, and really making the worldwide threat bring the world together. The story line is so intricate and perfect that it could easily be a professional video game, yet this is a bunch of nerdy ass voice actors having fun in their spare time (I know they're paid but still, it's definitely not their main job)! It's just incredible. I'm extremely excited for when Vox Machina (hopefully) defeats the Chroma Conclave and what enemy will arise afterward. Once Matt delves into the realm of Gods and Demons, I have no idea what he'll be able to come up with. Keep it up, guys

I so want Matt to write books.
But the thing I see is that Matt is the world-builder, but the players are the ones who've worked out the nuances of intra-party relationships.
He seems similar to me. I can come up with a ten-thousand year history for a world, a dozen different factions, five different cultures, and myriad unique organizations, systems of magic and alchemy, and secret cults. Yet I just can't quite nail down interpersonal relationships.
Evan Turner I'm 100% hoping that when Critical Role ends (because of course it will eventually, just hopefully not for at least 1-2 years!), Matt can work with Wizards of the Coast to make a pre-written world and a bunch of adventures within it. It'd be a lot of work, but I would happily pay $100+ for my copy

Sam is very subtle at actually playing the game, because Scanlan's otherwise such a boisterous and silly character, but he's probably the best player in the group at both combat (in terms of understanding his class and abilities) AND roleplay.

Grog may be a killing machine but I find it kind of sweet he has someone like Pike to anchor him to do what is right. It really adds to his character. And besides I REALLY WANT ASHLEY TO BE THERE FOR GROG'S MOMENT!
Also despite being the comedy duo, Grog and Scanlan had alot of character development here.
+John Wong Travis plays Grog to the absolute T. He is so aware that Grog is not the smartest, and when Grog does come up with something clever, he always has a way to mask it as something lucky, or stumbled upon. AND he's funny too! What's not to like! :)

I like Travis but people are a tad grabbing at straw because he plays reserved and is more the action fun guy.
Isn't it interesting that Fourth tends to criticize the women, the men when they show emotional traits, and is all proud of grog thee burliest of men? Like, he's downright abusive towards Keyleth. It's disheartening to see that people still think it's okay to talk about others that way.

Forty seven stealth is when you shoot a guard in the knee with an arrow in Skyrim and they spend a minute searching for you before chalking it up to the wind.
No. 47 stealth is shooting an adventurer in the knee and they go and join the guard..........

@@PrincessMeggala0913 That's hilarious and I hadn't actually connected it that way before. I read that "took an arrow to the knee" was an old expression that meant he got married which also made sense for the guard.

47 stealth is walking by a guard and them not realizing they'd been stabbed until 5 minutes after
43:30 - Scanlan says "We should do something to repay the debt," instead of saying they should give the broom back. Then a minute later he says that Vex should let him pick someone to help, and he has a crafty look in his eyes, and he even writes down the promise.
I think he had this whole thing mapped out in his head, and he wants to be able to ask Vex to look after his daughter in case of his death, like he presumably did in his secret note to Pike.
Lol or this was a long term prank in the making :)
Every time Craven Edge sighs in annoyance I get so excited for this plotline.

the more hours these guys play, it becomes so obvious how fucking incredible Travis is. he copes with the Grog's limitations nobly and without falter, while managing to exploit them for great storytelling and hilarity at every opportunity. the mastering of the wolf was about the most obvious example in recent episodes how he has the right idea about stuff and uses grog to enact it brilliantly. while all the others were being weak and condescending to this evidently powerful beast he gives it a show of strength and instantly gets results, even then the rest didn't properly get the idea of how this wolf needed to be treated. Grog was always set up to be a funny character but Travis plays him so well that he's the most interesting as well. Respect by the barrel.
got to give Sam and Scanlan a mention too, able to turn a mood in an instant in any direction.
Alex Luff Ditto. Later he gets to play a scheming Clasp member in a one-shot and it's a positive joy to watch him RP someone who isn't a moron.
Just watched that a few days ago, he was pretty great.
Honestly the weakest link is gone from the group. And besides his constant meta gaming and asshole tendencies tibs was a great character. I'm not the biggest pike fan tbh due to her refusal to rp or get an actual grasp on her character sometimes. And. Ot hating on ashley/pike she is still a far better player than myself and way more talented but i just get the feeling that everyone in the group loves her so much she will always be an integral part of their story as a unit.
3 years later and the same is mostly true with Fjord and Knott. They are just so good at they're roles, maybe Travis is a bit better at Grog I will admit.
IMO Travis is one of the best players, and Grog is one of the best characters. It evokes the idea of the fool in zen, he greets the whole world with wonder and reverence, he thinks very little of himself and his abilities, and so he has unlimited power.

Scanlan is lowkey the ultimate support character. He is armed with a lot of really usefull spells and a few heavy hitters items. He really turn tides in battle.

Just started watching CR, started from c1e1, and really early on I read a comment about Scanlan that really stuck with me: "Everyone in Vox Machina is ready and willing to face down a god. Scanlan, on the other hand, is ready to face down two."

He also supports everyone emotionally. One of my favourite moments is when Vex asks for his help with the broom. He starts off with his usual antics, but when he sees she actually wants/needs his help he gets to work. And when she asks what she owes him he says “Nothing. That’s what friends do.”

Hey do you guys remember when Keyleth gave a raven's skull as a present to Percy to remind him and Vox Machina about what they could've become? Well, take a look at Vax. There's now a new Raven Queen's champion because of Percy's action. That's some crazy foreshadowing Keyleth.
The Raven Queen is an actual Deity in D&D and was implemented in the campaign, long before the Skull mate. It was part of the worlds lore.

Wet Willy To be fair, I'm pretty sure Matt has elaborated somewhere that originally the Raven armor was meant for Percy and (spoilers) the dagger Whisper was meant for Vax. Then Vex died...and Vax made the deal...and everything got mixed up.
Now, Percy might not have been designated as the "champion of the Raven Queen" per se, but still he would have been its bearer, and thus the raven skull would have been even more fitting.
So vex cleric now?

@@baseballjustin5 it was her own greed + percy's carelessness. She wasn't by him she was waiting for her brother to climb out the pit. Her greed made her leave Vax and run over to the coffin putting her within the curse's blast radius. If she had stayed waiting to help her brother it wouldn't have happened to her.

Laura even rolled for traps but didn't get to say anything because Percy took the armor. Jaffe is know for really high rolls so he was fine, Laura had a shitty roll. Vex didn't take the armor so it's not her fault. Its like saying a person getting run over on a sidewalk is at fault for moving slightly closer to the edge.
@@Teja63859 no your analogy is wrong. She went away from helping her brother solely because she wanted to see what Percy had found. Out of greed. She was not "on the sidewalk" she went from standing by her brother stuck in a well who needed help. (To fit your analogy) to a car with the trunk open in the middle of the road, to see what was inside. (Also to fit your analogy) and what was inside was a bomb. That she wouldn't have been hit by if she had stayed by her brother in the well. So yes Percy set off the pirverbial bomb. And that's why Vax was so angry with him.
She also recognized that her greed played a role in it. And that's probably part of why over time she became less greedy. I mean she said towards the end the amount of money it cost to save someone didn't matter. She gained perspective on what's more important. And her brother became the champion of the raven queen. His death later wasn't Vex's fault. He could have lived a long life still as the champion. But that's not how the story went. It was beautiful and sad. Because that's the reality we don't often see in other stories. The mistakes, the ego, the greed, the ignorance, of human nature. I was just thinking the same thing (just hit break). It would've been so easy for Travis to be like "yeah let's go check it out" and justify it as Grog wanting to see his uncle, or preparing for ass-kicking or any other reason. But he took the technically less convenient option and explained it in character so perfectly. It was really a great moment of depth for Grog, really showing that he doesn't just care about blood and revenge, but that honor is deeply ingrained in him. It's the same force that drove him to save Pike's grandfather all those years ago and set him on the path he's on today.
Wow, Travis did a great job on Grog's pride in this one. He looked like he would go and confront the Goliaths simply as an act of pride but really was scared to do so. The way he shot down Perry's suggestion about the hat was really well acted.

Travis’s interrogation was pure genius. Completely dodged persuasion rolls just by role playing knowing the guy
Though I love the team, Grog and Scanlan MAKE the show for me. Having a Grog-centric arc coming up is fantastic. Honestly, I wish the Grog arc would be as long as Percy's sidequest, because Grog and Scanlan are the perfect Marx Brothers duo.

I love how the character with the lowest intelligence is the one to talk through strategy most readily.
He's a warrior and strategy has a place in his mindset, especially when dealing with a superior foe sitting in a fortified position. Even wolves and other pack animals will use tactics to engage larger prey.

Scanlan and Craven Edge were basically just playing tug of war on Grog's mind.
Kind of like the devil and angel on each shoulder trope, except the angel smells strongly of booze and keeps thrusting suggestively.

I don't know if they mention it or not but am I the only one that thinks Travis was seeing if the cow bled not just because of Grog's intelligence being null but also the fact that if it bled he was hoping to be able to farm strength out of it with Craven Edge?

StretchyPlays Get the feeling those ghosts in particular had no stats/are completely NPC nonentities, as there was no AC worth mentioning or hitpoint value. Same for the cow, since it shares the same existence space. Can’t farm strength from nothing, but potentially in Grog’s mind, the cow was “more real” until he figured out otherwise?

I love how willing Percy is to do pretty much anything that Vex asks. I absolutely adore them
how does he do this?! seriously - the group decided where to go next in the midst of this episode and Matthew Mercer describes the whole layout of the town, what's going on, etc. This guy's DM skills are utterly amazing.
Doug Vehovec He has notes jotted down for all the major areas that he knows stuff will be happening and a few random places to be used as needed. He also adlibs a lot. He does DM tips videos as well where he discusses some of the things people have asked about.
He is seriously amazing. When they were in Whitestone the first time they could have gone literally anywhere, but he had a floor plan of where they eventually ended up. I think it's a cross between subtly leading and being massively over-prepared, he did say at the end of that episode he had designed the entire city just in case.
Doug Vehovec he does DOZENS OF HOURS of prep a week. He has entire cities already laid out.
Matt is like the Beholder of DM's he has plans upon plans, maps of maps, and he takes note of EVERYTHING. He never gets the chance to railroad his players because they railroad themselves.
He has the experience, and for sure he really is great, but the key point is: it's technically a job for him, so he has the time to prepare.

I love how Matt delivered that revelation, giving half a hint and letting them make the connection on their own. It's always incredibly satisfying as a player to "figure something out", even if it will be fully revealed shortly after. That moment of realization, puzzle pieces clicking into place, is what makes deep story RPGs so fun, and Matt is brilliant at it.

They are, but they do tend to disappear into their own little world, which makes it annoying that they're talking when something important is happening, ESPECIALLY when Matt is describing something. I very much appreciate the shushers when something like that happens.
Also, it sort of lends explanation to those moments when Taliesin says a witty line that the others don't hear/listen. They're not used to having to hear from him, because he's usually speaking to Marisha and often at a volume that only she could hear, and perhaps Sam.
Just something I've noticed, and an answer to the thousand comments I see on every video going "omg why does nobody react to Percy's one-liners?!".
So, true story: Once upon a time, I was brand new to Twitch. I'd heard various friends, RUclipsrs, and such mention that they liked and/or were on Twitch, so I went to check it out. I was kind of lost for a few days, not sure what to watch, but then I noticed that Dungeons and Dragons was listed as a game. And I was like: Oh, I thought that this was more of a video game/computer game site... but I guess D&D is a game... I'd never played it myself, because I was a loser with no friends when I was young, but I'd heard about it and was curious. So I went to check it out, clicked on the one with the most viewers.
Turns out it was this episode of Critical Role, though I didn't know anything about it at the time. I watched until it finished, and thought it was interesting, but because I was brand new to Twitch and didn't know any better, I didn't really pay attention to important details like what channel it was on, what time and what day it was, what the name of the show was, etc. I figured that if I wanted to watch people play D&D again, I could just turn on Twitch at any time and if not this particular group, something similar would be there. What I didn't realize at the time is that this game is really hard to stream with good production quality, so there's a limited number of streams that are good enough to keep a newbie to D&D interested, like I was at the time, if you don't already know the people doing it. So when I went to look for more D&D, I was kind of disappointed by what I found - not that they were terrible, but I was hoping for something like this but was only finding amateur streamers.
And this particular episode really stuck with me, more than I realized except in hindsight. I had been so absorbed by the story that I could recall it in great detail even though this wasn't the most exciting episode, really - a lot of exposition, goofing around, minimal fighting, minimal danger, travel (though at least it wasn't a shopping episode). For months I periodically peeked at the D&D streams on Twitch hoping to find this again or at least something similar, but I guess that I never happened to randomly check on a Thursday evening. I eventually pretty much stopped trying to look for it.
Until I looked one more time, almost a year later - just seeing what was going on in the D&D games. I saw a stream with a ton of viewers, looked at it, and it was Critical Role, Episode 89! It took me a moment to figure it out, because the set was different, the overlay was different, but no those are the same people... I freaked out! Smarter this time, I actually paid attention to what channel I was on and the name of the show, found the website, and spent every spare moment of my freetime for the next couple of months binge watching the entire show from the beginning until I was caught up, and I now watch them every Thursday ever since.
I also attempted to get my best friends hooked on it, which only succeeded a little bit in that they didn't have enough time to watch it all but they did get interested in D&D. About nine months after finding Critical Role again, I started to DM a homebrew campaign with those friends, and we've been doing that regularly for two years now. And now I'm well on my way into watching the entire thing completely through a second time, partly for nostalgia, partly to catch all the things I missed the first time, and partly to help inspire me to DM better.
So because of all of the above, this episode holds a special place in my heart.

I love Sam's roleplay during this episode, especially during the sword scene. He never drops his classic Scanlan smile, but you can tell he shows genuine worry. When he was finally able to hold the sword, and when he gave it back to Grog, you could tell he was genuinely nervous about the unlike him pull he felt while wielding the sword. Best rp, 11/10

Fucking Grog man, I love this dude. And I love how Travis plays his character. Perfect roleplay and excellent strategic thinking from the player, because even though he's forced to play a low intelligence character, he roleplays intelligent decisions as instincts from his life as a warrior.
