- 1 Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
let me hide myself in thee;
let the water and the blood,
from thy wounded side which flowed,
be of sin the double cure;
save from wrath and make me pure.
2 Not the labors of my hands
can fulfill thy law's demands;
could my zeal no respite know,
could my tears forever flow,
all for sin could not atone;
thou must save, and thou alone.
3 Nothing in my hand I bring,
simply to the cross I cling;
naked, come to thee for dress;
helpless, look to thee for grace;
foul, I to the fountain fly;
wash me, Savior, or I die.
4 While I draw this fleeting breath,
when mine eyes shall close in death,
when I soar to worlds unknown,
see thee on thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
let me hide myself in thee.
"Rock of Ages" is a classic Christian hymn that has a rich history. The lyrics were written by Augustus Montague Toplady in 1763, and the hymn was first published in The Gospel Magazine in 1775. The hymn's lyrics are often associated with themes of salvation and the grace of God.
The story behind the hymn is quite interesting. Toplady, an Anglican cleric, was inspired to write "Rock of Ages" during a storm in the Mendip Hills in England. Legend has it that he found shelter in a cleft of a rock, and this experience inspired the metaphor used in the hymn. The lyrics emphasize the sufficiency of Christ's sacrifice and the believer's complete dependence on God's grace.
The hymn has been set to various tunes over the years, with the most popular being the melody composed by Thomas Hastings in 1830. "Rock of Ages" has been widely used in Christian worship services and remains a beloved hymn in many denominations.
