Maybe they both had it done at the same time, because look at Michelle now! (Yes, I know she's a different actress, but for the story's purposes, it'd fit!)
Terrible what they did to Pauline in the last few months. The Pauline that lied to Martin about having a brain tumour is like a completely different character compared to the one who was sticking by Mark when Peggy banned him from the Vic for having ‘AIDS’, or the one who confronted Dirty Den for getting her 16 year old daughter pregnant.
I can see it, her being so desperate not to be alone she starts coming up with demented things to guilt and manipulate. Not a proud thing, but people do desperate things when backed into a corner. Just like her marrying that fool because she thought he could be a replacement Arthur. Its sad, because it's not so much butchering a character, but tormenting one who's had a hard life until they start getting cold and twisted. You know Pauline is a character, but it feels like an almost abusive relationship between Pauline and the writers, until she breaks.
@@nrlsan36_34 ''Just like her marrying that fool because she thought he could be a replacement Arthur.'' Joe wasn't a bad man though, he was no worse than saint Arthur.
It feels like they planned this death for years, an iconic character dying on Christmas Day in the middle of the Square as it was snowing. So when Wendy Richards decided to leave, only Pauline Fowler, the matriarch of the original central family of the show could pull it off.
Rest in peace Wendy Richards you were great in your appearances on dad's army, your role in every episode of are you being served and are you being served again, and in eastenders. You left the earthly plain too soon.
I think Eastenders does a great job with scenes like this, yep it's depressing but it makes you value family members more. I'd literally fall to pieces if any of my parents died, or my siblings, same with my niece, nephew and grandparents their my world. Family first
It's true she did die of cancer, but she quit the show because she hated the idea of Pauline marrying again. She felt Pauline should always be married to Arthur Fowler.
i actually remember reading an interview with richards after her exit and she also said she regretted not leaving the show years earlier as she did not like how the show had lost its traditional values over the years and she criticised how it had all gone in a different direction from its original premise.

she had a fight with her husband joe sand he hit her on the head leading to a brain haemorrhage. Ironically Arthur died in almost identical circumstances ten years before this.
I mean, she was absolutely unbearable toward the end and I wasn't sad to see Pauline go, but they did Wendy dirty by giving her the duff duffs and not that slow sad piano music everyone else gets when they leave.
In my opinion, Den's death at the hands of Chrissie was even worse because he like Pauline was one of the best characters in the show, I wanted him to live on to even encounter Grant Mitchell (as well as Phil) and later die (either of a fatal injury or an illness) perhaps with Dennis or Sharon at his side, his death just seemed lame to me when his head was smashed by Chrissie.
