I may try to glue felt over my picks that I don’t like or use because I like the sound the felt has. Makes me want to test one out on my guitar. Adrian, that’s so sweet. I’m sure your young daughters will love you for that! There are some felt picks on Amazon and I just bought them. I’ll be releasing a review on those sometime this week... but for now the felt picks on this diy video will hold ya ;)
Nice idea. I make my picks out of leather belts which I get very cheaply from charity shops. Soft floppy leather gives a nice gentle note and I use a hard leather one for instances where we do ukulele meets heavy metal. Ah, the fun we have. Also whenever I order any equipment I always say, " are you willing to throw in a couple of leather picks". It nearly always works. Ken
Darrell Williams . You would be surprised at some of the things that I have purchased including several Victorian outfits that I wear at Tatton Park when I am with the Living History group. I see several guitars but I have yet to see a ukulele at a charity shop. Ken
Darrell Williams .Well done. Let know if and when you find a decent ukulele in a charity shop.I am always looking for them but have yet to come across even one. I rather think that you'll bet me to it. Ken
Hi, my special new friend. I'm an almost 76 year old recent widow with metastatic breast cancer to the bone. I commented on another of your programs, that you are so special to me, that now I have a new spice to my life - my new ukulele!!! I've had it long enough to have pretty good healed blisters on myfingers. You are so new to me that I dont where to look for needed knowledge. I want to locate printed tabs and cords. Where can I find them? Do you have a store? Please let me one if you read this.
I personally dont think I have felt so I used a small drawstring cloth baggy and it sounded really good! I already have problems playing ukulele because my fingers are sensitive and I have short fingers and finding a way to help me play was amazing! I never thought of using a pick for some reason
I have another suggestion for a stronger felt pick without wrapping hard plastic. If you iron Pellon 808 Craft-Fuse Fusible Interfacing between two layers of felt, and then cut out your picks, I think you'd be very happy to try it. It costs about $2.50 per yard and you can buy it at any fabric store or craft store. Frankly, wherever you purchased your felt, you can buy a whole assortment of fusible interfacing. The one I suggested is the stiffest. In order to protect your iron, I suggest cutting the fusible produce a half inch smaller on each side. That way, the border of felt on both sides will not allow the heat set adhesive affect your iron. It means wasting a little felt but it's so inexpensive, that you will be happy. Remember cut out the picks AFTER you fuse a sheet between two layers of felt. Maybe let it cool a bit first, so that your scissors won't get the hot adhesive on the cut edges. Once the fabric "sandwich" has cooled, there won't be an issue with the scissors.
Great idea thanks a lot, i made one and sprayed it with hair spray and let it dry to make it stiff and it works good so far, when it gets flimsy i'll spray it again.
+tylenol josephine yes, I understand. My students’ hands hurt after playing for a while. Some people in the comments say they like the ones made out of leather. I’ve never tried them, but it’s good to know there are options that won’t hurt the body of the ukulele. Hope this works for you! But remember to continue playing with fingers too so that you build up the endurance ;)

Hello~I am enjoying your tutorials using guitar pick for my ukulele. I found out that string is difficult. Is the plastic guitar pick will gonna damage my ukulele string?😉
I love soft picks, so your tip about buying felt and cutting them out is great and also saves me money! I don't care for hard picks as I sound like I'm whaling away at my uke with a shovel. 😄
Leather pics are great as you can have soft and hard leather. My most favorite is a bamboo pic, because although it is hard but gives a loud soft tone on the uke unlike many other hard pics. Wooden pics are awesome, good to experiment with dark woods and lighter colored woods, these make the uke quite loud.
I love me a DIY project (even though I never make anything) :D Fantastic video as usual. I loved the second one. Mild and soft and not too loud. Just like a nylon string should sound :D
Hmm... I wonder if I could make some sort of felt pick for use on Elixir Polyweb guitar strings, something that is soft won't eat through the coating they have on them, yet still sound bright if it has a more solid centre like a bit of plastic. Thanks for the inspiration.
@@BernadetteTeachesMusic take a piece of paper and fold it like you would fold a flag. That is to say, fold it in half, the long way. Fold it in half again, the same way. Bring the corner up to the side, making a triangle. Fold the triangle up. Continue the triangle fold up the length of paper until there isn’t enough paper to continue. There should be a very small length of paper left outside the triangle fold. Tuck that remaining paper INTO the triangle fold, which keeps it from coming undone. This makes a reasonably thick triangle of paper. It’s sturdy enough to be used as a pick, but being made of paper, it falls apart pretty quickly.
You can buy a Pic Punch. I was given one as a Christmas gift. Now all old credit cards, hotel keys and other flat, light plastics get turned into cheap pics. Then a couple of layers of light felt and there you go.
Thank you so much my neighbors were probably wanting to kill me at night for playing ukulele and I always search for a diy before buying things and pick #1 was like, nothing to make but helped a lot!
First I love your videos and how you teach!! Second, could you possibly do a video with how to strum with the pick? I’m having trouble holding the pick and practicing my strumming patterns.
Hellooooo. Really good idea. I actually made leather picks, but I only had my leather shoes, my socks get a bit wet now but Ukulele picking much easier.👞👞 C
I find my high heels uncomfortable now I'm older, I'll send you the leather ones to salvage picks from 👠👠 😋 C . Also I like your excitement when you use pick three, reminded me of Scooby Doo! 😁
I'm way late to this video, but thought I'd put in a cost saving suggestion. Instead of a credit card, maybe try using the cutting mats they sell at dollar stores in the kitchen area. It's a milky clear plastic easily cut with scissors. Slightly more flimsy than a Visa, but it comes with two 11"x14" sheets for a dollar. With your 25 cent felt it would make a lot of picks cheaply.
So I made my own felt pick and shared it with you on Instagram did you get to see it? I really like the heart shape is more secure to handle for me. Thanks for this awesome idea I had been curious about felt picks for some time.
I really cant figure out how to play the Ukulele using a pick, but i think i will try and make one of these with a credit card inside and give it another try :) thanks for the idea
I like leather.... guy at a music store cut one out of a piece of an old briefcase. I cut one from the end of a belt---it was harder and sounded like my medium Wedgie rubber pick. The slightly thinner and softer leather sounded more like my thumb. I like felt and I like DIY.
Hi Joshua! Over time you could damage the top of your ukulele (where the pick strikes your uke). Some people like that, as it shows the instrument is being used but others don't like that. It's a personal choice :)

In a pinch, I've used a paper football as a pick. Not the best (it falls apart fast) but for a quick and dirty pick it's ok.
A paper football?
@@BernadetteTeachesMusic take a piece of paper and fold it like you would fold a flag.

I have a question: Is it bad that I use a plastic guitar pick for my ukulele?
Hi Joshua!
Over time you could damage the top of your ukulele (where the pick strikes your uke). Some people like that, as it shows the instrument is being used but others don't like that. It's a personal choice :)
I always thought it would damaged the strings.
How was the first one so thick tho
I love DIYS

will these picks work on guitar?
No because uke strings are made of nylon. They are soft. Guitar strings are of steel they need harder pick so a plastic one will be best for guitar
PS : I am aware of nylon strings in guitar and about nylon being strong polymer. If you have nylon strings it might work out for you. I have steel ones

Felt picks are a great idea. Because you don't want to use a plastic one and ruin the pattern/artwork on the uke.
yes, exactly. And music teachers have to make a class set of ukuleles last for years, so it's a good option to have!
the glue makes the 2 layer pick harder
