My family ancestors, the Donaldsons moved from Coldstream in Northumbria to work in the mines though I believe one of the two brothers became a railwayman. They first settled in Lackenby then Normanby but I with my siblings grew up in Lazenby during the 60s and enjoyed exploring the woods and hills at our door step. You, by this video answered a lot of questions I've always had. Thank you. PS As a young boy I heard rumours that there used to be two Armoured Tanks sited on the side of the hills and we spent a lot of time looking for them. The ones you show are Crusader Tanks fitted with a 2 Pounder gun. Well used in North Africa. Its a shame I missed them by a few years. The SS Castle was always a spooky place, it felt that the birds stopped singing when it came in sight as we walked the old tramway.
A real delight to see and hear this man's memories. Perhaps we should all pay attention to what's around us and save what we can for future generations. I used to play in these areas in the late '70's and '80's. Might come back with the camera to capture what remains.
Hope this guy is still going strong ,if so I would like to say "i spent all my small life climbing Eston hills I have lived in eston all my life I'm now 33 and love the memories that eston hills give me ,just wish the houses where still standing at pit top .....you mentioned ss castle I still visit it and I have had so many good days as a child and a adult looking around the castle .....I love all the old stories ...if you have any more pictures then I would like to see them please upload to RUclips I will subscribe ...
i love your videos charley! got me into exploring mines...I believe it is blocked and completely flooded. the water has risen by about 5 inchs in just over a year since my first visit here. I will be going back there with something to get further in than i did on my recent video. but from what i saw it turned slightly to the left and looked to have been back filled
This is the last comment I promise there is so much that I don't know about the mines could you possible send me a copy of that map .i would like to fine out more I though I was quite educated on eston hill but I will admit I know very little after watching your video ...really good I'm going to watch the next one 👌👌👌👍👍👍👍
@30.40 ruclips.net/video/Qq8ZChj6l6I/видео.html. The mine entrance was there? Thats pretty close to the power magazine #acenturyinstone - edit - 12mins 56secs not 30.40 :)

Hi,
Not sure if you're interested sir, but I believe those tanks are Crusaders, thanks :)
My great uncle Richard Yaxley was killed working the trucks at the mines aged 17.
Does anyone know how far the drift goes down the ss castle? Someone told me once it goes down for atleast a mile, really creepy but interesting
I think its blocked off? I couldnt see anything except a wall. I was completely terrified at the time though!
@@rohanjones1000 It's blocked off. As kids we often tried to get through without success.
@@Charlyfarly2 Thanks Charly, a scary and vibrant memory. I bet theres been some parties there too when it wasnt such a tip.
The tip now has a people's home on it .they always said you could never build on the tip due to uneven ground .what money can do eh
those are the earliest pics of the ss ive seen..
My Dad used to live in the old miners cottages (The Square) in Eston.
