Tsunami warning for American Samoa due to volcanic activity in Tonga; no threat to Hawaii

- The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) reported a tsunami warning for American Samoa that was generated by volcanic activity in Tonga. There is currently no tsunami threat to Hawaii.

We heard a loud BANG!! in Fiji and also had heavy rain that lasted for about half hour.. some places in fiji have flooded...prayers going out to our Tongan and samoan families who are affected by this disaster GOD BLESS YOU ALL❤❤

We are in Nadi, Fiji now holiday 🇫🇯 and we heard the banging noise for around 30 - 1 hour in our villa, it’s s actually move like earth quake, like the door and other things, our villa just 20 metre from the sea. Last week the whole week it’s raining and cyclone 🌀 twice . And the ocean water really high. It’s really scary

Sad, Tonga the main country of interest is almost non-existent in this report. Weatherman doesn't even seem to know where Tonga is on that map! And Tongan's be like, "Oh yeaaah, we fine, thanks fo asking".

The volcano had been erupting for a while until the other day which exploded tremendously, then there was a tsunami warning for Tonga

Wish the report can explain a bit that 2 feet Tsunami comparing to "Wave of 2 feet" is a day and night difference. Tsunami is a Mass of water surge above sea level at depth and can get even higher when it gets slow down by the ascending sea floor as it reaches land or harbor.

Does your meteorologist know anything? Tsunamis such as this one can be generated by the force of the explosion of volcanic material exploding, and/or falling into the water. Landslides, rockfalls, and the breaking of ice into water can also cause tsunamis. It is important to know that tsunamis aren't always caused by earthquakes, as real warnings can be issued without an earthquake. I hope that everyone in the Pacific and surrounds are save, and that the ash cloud doesn't being a volcanic winter - that's the last thing we need for 2022.
Based on his lack of understanding of how weather satellite imagery works (see "...popped up and went away." above) I would say I doubt he paid much attention during Business Administration classes that covered the module on pyroclastic shock events. 🤦♂️

Tsunami waves are different from a usual ground swell, the speed and depth of the wave can create a much bigger wave when it hits shallow water and can surge a long way inland

We do have vulcanologists, though, and they don't use the earthquake magnitude to categorize volcanic events whose pyroclastic shock waves below sea level cause tsunamis.

I was surprised that Hawaii wasn't considered to be at risk given all the stories of how the tsunami hit everywhere else, even going as far as Peru. Could some local Hawaiians tell me why this was the case? There were plenty of vids that captured the waves from the Japan earthquake, but none from this 1.

You know this is a serious situation in terms of people’s lives, but this has to be the funniest thing I seen, I mean a volcano generated 7.6 earthquake, the hell does that even mean. The cause was actually that the volcano erupted and caused a tsunami, it wasnt an earthquake, it was a volcanic eruption that caused the tsunami.

In the middle of the ocean (deep water), a buoy reading a 2 feet tsunami is big. Once it hits shallower waters, it will get significantly higher
More about the surge. This not like a 2ft shore break, more equivalent to 2 ft sea level rise for a period of time. Massive energy and potential spread of damage depending on elevation.
