Volcano Eruption Update; New Explosive Eruption at Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai

  • The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano in Tonga just produced a new eruption, sending a plume of ash 16,000 meters or 52,500 feet into the atmosphere. Although the eruption only lasted for several minutes on December 20th, there is a worry that more explosions will occur rather soon. This video will separate fact from fiction, and discuss what size and duration of volcanic activity is expected at Hunga Tonga. It is a very famous volcano as it has produced several spectacular island forming eruptions in the 21st century.

We are likely to see a spectacular "surtseyan" or "phreatic" eruption to continue over the next several days. I would caution against visiting near these islands by boat, but a distance of >5 kilometers is a rather safe distance.
    Two additional things to add:
    1. Due to today's unexpected eruption, the video which was planned for today (a volcano in South America) was moved to tomorrow.
    2. I was unable to find any photos which I was given permission to use of the eruption column. As a result, stock photos of a similarly natured eruption were used courtesy of Philippines AirAsia Captain Aljess Lasmarias.

@@pon2oon Your comment reminded me of a skit on the 1960s satyrical TV show, "That Was The Week That Was." In it, an actor portraying a newsman was reading the "news," describing a summit meeting of African leaders, with well-known but hard-to-pronounce African leaders' names, and saying that the U.S. president, Johnson at the time, would address the meeting. Meanwhile, Flip Wilson (Black actor and comedian) stood by, dressed as an African tribesman. At the end, he says, in his best Black American voice, "Lynden Baines Johnson! Man, dem westerners sho' do have funny names!"

I thought it was amazing that the eruption in 2016 connected both of the small islands, and then I was blown away when you said a very early eruption there destroyed a much larger island, of which the two smaller islands were tiny fragments. The eruption that destroyed the much larger island must've been cataclysmic!

The quantities of SO2 involved are tiny in relation to the world's climate. The greenhouse gasses releassded by the many volcanic eruptions that happen year in year out used to balance the amount of these gases removed from circulation by longterm storage or even subduction; there was a self balancing system. We (homo sapiens) are a new climatic factor, doing what no previous mammal species has been able to do before, alter global climates.

It would be very interesting to know if the initially expected high sulfur input into the atmosphere had led to the prediction of a longer and colder winter 2022/23 in Europe. If this had been the case, world politics since February 2022 would likely have unfolded differently - but the opposite occurred, and the winter of 2022/23 was unusually warm in Europe. Perhaps one day we will find out if this was an effect of the high water vapor input into the mesosphere caused by the volcanic eruption - and whether Russian scientists had predicted a cooling in Europe due to the eruption and, as a result, a significantly increased demand for natural gas.
