    So, this was fun, Chris!
As soon as I saw the notification for this video, I determined to play along; I jumped to my pen cases to grab my WS 3008s (I have the 3008 and 3008A models, in gold-toned and chrome finishes). As you went along, I saw the Lanbitou 3059, so I grabbed a couple of those as well. Since I fancy myself the Queen of the Cheap Chinese pen, I've got a bit of a collection! LOL!
I'm very fond of all of these pens; both nib styles that I have write well ( I did some very minor smoothing on one of them) and they don't give me any problems.
I purchased all of mine in sets from Amazon, 'cause: I'm also Queen of Instant Gratification, and I believe in havig backups and backups of the backups!
Glad to see that *disassembly* is easy, though I haven't done that yet.
I keep *wanting* to purchase a TWSBI Diamond 580 AL, just for comparison's sake, but the Cheap Chinese pen lady in my head simply never allows this to happen....**sigh**...
Enjoy the holiday and thank you for the surprise pen review!

Sister Sun I find it exciting to have 10 pens for the price of one TWSBI too. He he. Have ordered 3 so far. Let’s hope I hit the jackpot before I hit the limit (price of one TWSBI).

I noticed that my first 3008 (which may or may not be an A) differs from the batch of 4 received from Amazon and sold as an A. All were sold as new and bought in a stock configuration. The first visually resembles the nib on my Lamy Safari. On the new batch of four the nib visually resembles a Pilot or similar. I'm a newbie so this is all guesswork based purely on failing eyesight and without any Pilots in my collection for a proper comparison, but there seems to be a variation in nibs shipped as stock on the 3008/3008A, which is interesting. They all seem to write flawlessly, whatever they are!

@@PolyMathWannaBe62 so timely is your question, as I’ve used two of the Lanbitou pens in my version of September’s 30 inks in 30 days. I hadn’t used either of them since last YEAR around this time! (I’d moved offices and a group of my pens were misplaced (or in the Alternate Universe: you choose!)
Still inked, when found, and though the FEEDS were dry, a twisting of the piston flooded them with (old) fresh ink ✍️ and we were off to the races!
I’m using them as accent colors in some of my research notes, and they’ve not failed me. Maybe I’m just fortunate. I’m here for that! Lololol

My very favorite Chinese pen is Jinhaao X750. Thank you - I miss her very much and I was blessed to learn a lot from her and enjoyed writing letters back and forth.

  • @bikkies

A few thoughts. The 3008A with the Pilot style nib has a locking feature that helps to secure the filler knob if you continue to turn it clockwise once the piston is fully up, whereas the standard one does not. This comes in useful for those who post the pen, since the cap posts onto the filler knob & turning the posted cap actuates the piston. Lately there are a variety of supposed 3008s sold as Wing Sung but with different features, making me think Wing Sung might be licensing the design to other manufacturers. Some have a contoured tripod grip and some don't. Some have a smooth barrel and some (the ones I like most) have a kind of facetting to the barrel that feels nice in the hand. Check out the Wing Sung 3011 for an interesting variant with a Pilot style nib, tripod grip, locking filler knob but with dimensions and styling comparable to the Pilot 78G/78G+. The Wing Sung 3009 is interesting too, available in nibbed and brush pen variants. For the Lanbitou 3059 the biggest issue many have found is that the nib dries out terribly. The hack is to get a Jinhao 599 (available for a handful of loose pocket change), remove the inner cap liner and then fit it inside the Lanbitou cap. Result: a Frankentou 3599 with zero drying out or flow issues. Win!

Great review, thank you. I only discovered this pen recently and now have five. The latch at the top can be a little temperamental but these are so cheap and - here in the UK at least - a replacement could be here the next working day. For something so cost-effective, you really can't go wrong. On a separate note, I was sorry to hear about your departed friend. It's obvious that you cared a lot for her and treasured her friendship. I have no doubt she felt the same.

@@ChrisSaenz13 Thanks for the reply. I'm very much a lazy person with appalling handwriting. I like pens that I can just throw in a box or bag, use and abuse. I doubt I'll be particularly gentle and loving with these (though I really should try). It seems these will be able to withstand a little rough treatment. One other thought. Unless you've latched the top, if you post these then any turns on the cap will actuate the piston and dump ink. I normally post my pens but on this model it may be best to avoid doing that. Otherwise a good all-round workhorse.

OH that's such a bummer on your pens that won't write -- I've been there with a few pens myself & I know it's not a fun predicament to be in!!!! Hi Chris, thanks for the thorough review. I have a Wing Sung 3008 too and really like it. I may have imagined it but I thought I saw a tiny spot of ink on the exterior one day. Maybe... Anyway, I disassembled it (very easy, as you show) and treated all the joints to a little smear of silicon grease, stocked to keep my eye droppers ink-tight. And, hey presto!, there's been no discernible ink egress since. Maybe I didn't need to but it can only help, is how I see it.

I then ordered a batch of no-branded replacements from AliExpress which were even better that I ended up changing all Lamys and Wing-Sung for them 😅 Regards

I love my Wing Sung 3008, they are a superb writer. I agree with you on the comfort over Twsbi 580. I rarely use it because of the weight, even though it’s a wonderful writer. I have 4 Wing Sung and I enjoy italic or broader nibs, I have tried putting my Lamy nibs on them and they all fall down, they are loose. Did you alter your Lamy nibs to fit them? I would love to use a 1.1 stub nib on them.

    • @ChrisSaenz13
      @ChrisSaenz13  Месяц назад

Hi @UARELOVE1010 - I didn't alter my 3008s ... the Lamy nibs fit slightly loose on mine but I keep my eye on them and the only thing I make sure -- is to take them off before I clean the pen so that I don't lose the nib by accident in the sink! My 3008s are old and from maybe some of the first waves of them I think ... the later ones I got a few were too loose also like you described. Have you tried the Jinhao 80s? They are one of the pens I most like putting Lamy nibs onto. I did some reviews of how to do it too because those have the opposite issue: it's a bear getting the stock nib off and the Lamy nibs fit very tightly ... the pen body resembles the Lamy 2000/Lamy Studio but it is a cartridge converter pen!

Thanks Chris! That was quite an in-depth review of the Wing Sung 3008. I remember this was something of a revelation when it appeared; i.e. to get a piston-filling fountain pen at this price point. The 3008 is still fantastic value and can be found on eBay for less than the price of a coffee. What I like about the pen is how comfortable it feels in my hand. As far as dislikes; the piston knob seems to have too much play and feels a bit loose. Nevertheless it all works well and for the money you really can't do much better.

The point of zinc plating is to discourage corrosion so those screws you bought should suffice. I understand from another pen-o-phile recently that newer stocks of the 3008 have a corrosion-resistant cap screw from new. Seems later variants also got a positive 'click' mechanism on the piston actuating knob, so it should get to the closed position and stay there (hopefully!)

Hi Vanilla -- oh gosh I'm sorry to hear one would not write at all that's depressing! The only other thing I know to try is putting a Lamy nib on it ... that has really been amazing with mine but there could be some defect I'm not aware of with the pen you got. I always suspect the nib first in any pen not writing situation ... however I don't have that many years experience and I don't know if maybe feeds can be defective? Do you have a Lamy nib you could try on the pen. If that works then it's most likely nib related and possible that some tuning will help it. I use brass shim material I buy at Goulet pens to open up nibs sometimes and I also use their micro-mesh -- I watch nib smoothing videos from The Pen Habit and from I think Troy LaPlante to learn more about how to do that.

I got one for even cheaper ($1.25) than the wing sung. It has a different clip but no brand on it. It is really good. The EF nib writes similar to my Pilot Kakuno nib. The nib varies line width a bit over time like the steel is not as hardened on the cheaper pen. Which is okay because of the price. I also can't figure out how to take the piston end off of it even after watching you do so. I don't want to break the pen so I will just leave it as it is. Mine posts but at first it was difficult and I didn't think it did.
I have been trying to figure out the grade of stainless steel that goes into modern pens and how they are hardened. I think it would make a good "how it's made" movie.

At the time, I didn't know that it had a Lamy style nib, but later found out when I briefly tried a Lamy Vista (returned it as I had my doubts if it was authentic!) and was able to swap the Lamy medium for the Wing Sung fine nib. Everything worked fine with both pens. The only thing that bothers me on the Wing Sung 3008 is the loose knob on the piston filler. Is that normal? I hope it's much better on the TWSBI models such as the TWSBI Eco? Hope you had a wonderful 4th of July and my condolences to your pen friend. Mahalo, Thomas

My Watch Later list just keeps on growing, lol. Between you, chrisrap52, waskisquirrel, pens and tea, plus some travel vloggers I've got so much! I'm not complaining. There's always something to watch while working on my BuJo or eating lunch.
I've researched the Ahab quite extensively. Watched lots of videos, read reviews and decided that it wasn't for me because of its foul odor. My sense of smell became more sensitive after getting pleurisy a couple of years ago. If there was a way to get rid of the smell completely I would be buying at least a couple of their pens. I think the Noodler's pens are some of the prettiest pens, and their prices are wonderful. Glad you had a good 4th.

Basically, wing sung 3008 appears to be copying the 580's and the ws 6359 mimics the lamy al star's. Not hating, just saying.

Hi No: Six - welcome! Oh yes definitely some copying going on with the Chinese pens! In a few cases I wish it worked in reverse too! :)

Evening. Do you mind telling me if there is a locking mechanism for the piston twisting portion. My concern is that it would accidentally turn in my pocket and spill the ink somehow.

Hi Duhizy - I have noticed that it just has a little bit of "play" in it (the piston knob) but it has never accidentally spilled ink on me ... that being said, I don't ever post the pen. I have to be honest and say I don't really know if it has a locking mechanism or not. I will try to find out.
