Here's the truth: almost no one hated the prequels before the Internet told them to.

@Vincent 2099 The fact that you think my comment is ridiculous makes it obvious you're one of those who got swept up in the prequel hate hype. You just jumped on a train. If you genuinely hate the prequels, that's totally fine. You're entitled to your opinion, just make sure it's your own. But I remember when these movies came out...there was no mainstream hate for these movies until years after their premieres. And even then, the Internet sensationalized the hate to make you think there was much more of it than there actually was. Go and look up the reviews for all three of these movies. None of them are bad by any means. In fact, compared to most movies, they're good and Revenge of the Sith has excellent ratings, by both audiences and critics. But if you listened to the Internet about these movies, you would think they had anywhere from 0% - 30% ratings. Again, you don't like them, fine, but don't delude yourself into thinking these movies are universally hated because they're not...in fact, more people like them than not.

No, it's not face blindness. Their own mothers couldn't tell Keira Knightly and Natalie Portman apart when they were in full costume and makeup.

I'm pretty sure I've heard Keira or Natalie say in an interview they themselves couldn't tell which one was on screen.
According to online trivia, when Portman and Knightley had the full makeup applied, even their own mothers could not tell who was who, which cemented the casting choice. It's not you ;)
I honestly don't get how people can't tell them apart... their teeth are different, same as their eyes, eyebrows, noses and face shape. They look alike, but not to an extinct that I can't distiguish them... when I first saw the film I immediatly knew they were two people...
I didn't know that was Kira Knightly, but yeah, its clear she's not Portman.

@Jack Handy Actually, they confirmed themselves that one day after shooting, one of their mum's came to pick them up and nearly took the wrong girl home. I can't remember which one it was (think it was Keira) but the clip of her saying on Graham Norton is on youtube.
I watched this as a kid so I was really confused when it was revealed that the Queen had a double that dressed up for her. I thought that meant she had a clone running around.
I don’t understand why people hate this movie so much. I loved it as a kid and still do as an adult.

From what I can make out the major reasons people hate the Phantom Menace in particular is the poor acting, the political talks and Jar Jar.
I admit the acting isn't perfect but it personally doesn't bother me that much.
I agree the political talks aren't the most exciting part of the movie but they do show us how the Republic is growing corrupt and how Palpatine is manipulating events from behind the scenes.
Yeah, I really can't stand Jar Jar at all, he's not very funny and his voice is really annoying.
Other than that I love this movie, it's got stunning visuals, a great score and one of the best lightsaber duels in the entire star wars canon!

everyone has their own type of humor. For you the film would have been better (or not, we can't tell) without him, for me maybe not.
i think for a lot of people, especially the kids who grew up on the OT in the 80s & 90s, and who formed the core of the PT cinema audience when it released, they were comparing their rose tinted memories of the original trilogy, seen though a childs eyes, with a more objective, adult view on the PT, and they had almost impossible standards for those flims to reach.
its intresting how much better they are viewed now, after the sequel triolgy, as people who grew up on the PT are now seeing their beloved star wars getting "Ruined" by new directors.
I see the flaws in the prequels but I don’t think they’re as bad as people are making it out to be.

They have their problems but are definetely enjoyable and worth watching. Most of them are actually much better upon closer inspection, but not everyone is watching these movies looking for the good. Lots of people look for the bad and it ruins the experience.

I love all three trilogies, and while the Prequels are objectively (i.e. referring to commonly accepted standards of good storytelling, acting, etc) the weakest of the bunch, I don't think they're anywhere near as bad as the "George Lucas ruined my childhood" crowd make them out to be. And subjectively, I adore them for how magical they were when I was a child.
Lucas told Ian McDermid "Think of your actual face as the mask that Palpatine always wears." That's just perfect directorial advice.
To add another possible win, I'd like to point out one scene of 'realism' displayed in this film, and it's one of my favorite parts in world building.
Shortly after the brief encounter with Maul on Naboo, someone asks Young Skywalker if he is ok, and his response is "...I'm cold."
This may not mean much to alot of people, but the kid literally spent his entire life, till this point, on a desert planet with two suns...this is his FIRST time being in space...and the kid is cold.
And metaphorically, it's the first time he's been so far apart from the warmth of his mother.
Try to remember how cold a desert night can be. It may not have been his first experience with the cold.
It COULD also be because of his encounter of Darth Maul.Kind of unlikely but it happens to others when they encounter Sith.

Also something I picked up on as a win is when Obi-Wan and Qui Gon bow to the council after their meeting, Obi-Wan bows quite deeply, whereas Qui Gon barely nods. Just another detail emphasising your win of how the two view the council.
What about when they're fighting in the forcefield room and Obi-Wan redeploys his lightsaber before the forcefields lower while Quai Gon continues to kneel. Just a demonstration of patience showing that Obi-Wan does have more to learn.
To be fair, Obi-Wan is a Padawan and Qui-Gon is a Master; their bows wouldn't be equally low regardless of their politics.
one of the most ridiculous things about when I actually saw The Phantom Menace in theaters is that everybody was clapping and cheering when the movie was over and it wasn't because they were excited than we was over, but it was actually because they thought the movie was actually good. Just all of a sudden after that people decide to just hate the movie and then everybody decide to hate the movie because that was the popular thing to do.
I don't think the phantom menace is great, but I have to say I am quite entertained by the movie.

Absolutely. This happened when I went too. Everybody was going nuts over it. (This happened with Green Lantern too. Yes, it has flaws, but people were extremely excited by it, then it came out and some really popular internet personality talked about how horrible it was, and no one has taken it seriously since). I still think it's great stuff.

I wish Qui Gon had a longer role in star wars. He is the only jedi who didnt agree with the jedi all the wayv(he is also my favourite green lightsaber yielding jedi)

Watch the Clone Wars cartoon, season 6. He's actually the key figure in the deepest spiritual realization that the Jedi have had in countless generations. IMHO, despite it being layered with his own sense of failure and depression, Luke is philosophically a follower of Qui Gon in TLJ.

"i know he comes back in some non-canon stuff" his return in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars tv series is canon and he becomes a very important character in the mythos.
Not to mention Rebels, which is canon and even ties into Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

I actually really like the story being about trade, it grounds the Starwars universe in reality as fighting wars over taxes and trade routes is absolutely something we would do and have done on earth; so it makes sense these basic issues any advanced society would be dealing with would carry over into the entire galaxy.
The line about Darth Maul returning in non-canon stuff hurts. I know he's well aware of it by now, but The Clone Wars is not only canon, but goddamn spectacular. I think it's my favorite thing I've seen from the franchise so far, though obviously it's not alone at the top.
I always thought it was interesting how everyone seems to miss the part when they say that "there haven't been any sith in a 1000 years". Seems meaningless until you consider that the oldest jedi at the time is Yoda who is only around 900 years old. This means that nobody in the prequels had any real life experience or encounters with the sith. The sith were essentially looked at by most like a scary myth. like a boogie man used to keep younglings from misbehaving. The equivalent would be us talking about vampires or rasputin and their legends aren't even 1000 years old yet.

I agree to an extent, but remember that the Jedi fought numerous bloody and prolonged wars against the Sith; they were sworn enemies, and when the Jedi finally triumphed, it was a huge deal for the entire Galaxy. Yes, the Sith and much of their lore fell into legend in the thousand years that followed, but the Jedi Temple contained many surviving Sith artefacts and forbidden knowledge, so it's not like the Jedi were completely ignorant of them. Rather, over the centuries they became complacent and arrogant, thinking the Sith were extinct and that they couldn't return without them knowing. They underestimated their ancient adversary and paid the ultimate price.

TimmyNoThumbz That may be true, but it's not genuine combat experience against someone else of comparable caliber. Killing regular thugs who aren't force users is different from a genuine sith Lord like Darth Maul who has been learning combat and force use since the cradle.

Extra Wins: The little signs of Anakin's arc
- His angry response to Padme calling him a slave
- His vindictive responses to Sebulba demeaning him for being a slave
- His talk about dreams indicating both his power fantasy of being a Jedi and his compassion for the other slaves
- His strong attachment to Padme and his mother because they are beautiful, kind things in his world of sand and slavery
- His desire to explore, because he's been stationary for most of his life, hearing stories from those who aren't
- His reverence of Jedi, which will be challenged as the movies go on (Kinda like 'Last Jedi')
- His 'feel, don't think' wins in both the pod race and the space battle
- The lingering question of whether or not he's motivated by compassion for others or the selfish desire to protect what makes his own life better
The Pied Bagpiper For a long time I saw his - although justified - hatred for Sebulba as a very early sign of what he would become and I was never taken seriously. I’m in peace now.

I'm old enough to have seen RotJ on theater (and marked me for EVER), and when TPM came out I went all happy to see it. And dude, I LOVED IT. Every time I hear the starting notes of Duel Of The Fates I get goose bumps. :D
I remember when I was 12, I saw the trailer for the revenge of the Sith on TV. That trailer was stuck in my mind 3 years later I watched ep 1,2 and 3 and was blow away. I lived in a small town in India, with limited access to foreign films, luckily I never knew the entire hate for the prequels. All I can see is it was made by people who loved their characters and story.
Liam Neesen is always a win. Ewan McGregor is always a win. Frank Oz is always a win.

Say what you want about the prequels, as a '91 millenial scumbag, Episode 1 made me a Star Wars fan. I never would have watched the original trilogy if it wasn't for Episode 1.

As a '93 millennial I agree, until I saw this with my mom and younger brother I only remember briefly seeing the training scene on the Falcon from A New Hope when it was on TV either because from the VHS or it was aired, but never thought much about the movie or the rest of the franchise until I saw the prequels. After seeing The Phantom Menace my parents bought a lego set, the visual dictionary, a poster, and a lightsaber for my brother and I. The only reason that I got interested in Star Wars at 5, making it a lifelong love was because of Episode I.
I'm in a bit of a weird spot. I was born in 91 myself, but the original trilogy made me a star wars fan before the special editions even came out.
Born in 95 and grew up with the prequel trilogy. I only saw the originals like 10 years later. The prequels have major problems, but a lot of the hate is by much older people viewing the prequels with nostalgia goggles

Exactly! That’s the point! Does every single character of a movie have to be important to be good? Of course not!
When I watched this for the first time with my sister on TV we had trouble remembering each character's name so each got a nickname. Obi-wan was "the youngster" and Kui-gon was "the hairy one" but my favourite is Darth Maul's. We called him "Devil's cousin" and laughed each time he appeared, just because of this nickname!
Um, Maul coming back is canon, Clone Wars is totally canon. :)

Maul's return is 100% canon. Clone wars really improved the prequel era quite a bit. It even made me like medichlorians.
I like hearing someone say what you said about Lucas in the end. I feel like people give him too much of a hard time.
What I remember of the Phantom Menace was theaters full of cheering fans both before and after the film. All this "It ruined the series" nonsense didn't start up until the Internet hate machine began churning.
Was Phantom Menace the best movie ever? Hell no.
But it was fun. And it added so much world building to the Star Wars Universe.
If anything I've always considered Attack of the Clones to be the worst one.... and thats mostly because it feels like Anakin's plot is too rushed. The detective Obi-Wan plot is excellent.
Midichlorians were never that bad to begin with. They don't explain the force, just what makes Jedi force sensitive while everyone else isn't.

Theres an arc with Yoda in the last season of Clone Wars that delve further into the medichlorian mythos that makes it a cool blend of magic and microbiology.

The Maul duel is one of the best scenes ANY movie has ever had. The editing and long cuts make it far superior to most fight scenes today. Nowadays you need to slow down a film to see half of what happens in the super fast cutting. The choreography maybe the best in any fight scene ever. The music (duel of the fates) is BEYOND EPIC! The tension when Obi Wan is trapped beyond the laser wall, skyrockets. The middle of the fight when Qui-Gon kneels to meditate. The second the wall opens, he attacks Maul like a lion. It's truly epic, all of it.
The Last Jedi had the worst lightsaber battle ever in contrast. You coukd see the bad guys/ stuntmen waiting to attack in the throne room. Many more problems with that movie but the fight scene was terrible.

I was 6 years old when this film came out and I loved it. To this day, people have always laughed when I say I love the Phantom Menace so thank you for this positive perspective. I feel validated and so does 6 year old me 🥲
People can hate on The Phantom Menace and all the prequels, but they should not criticize Lucas for wanting to have artistic freedom with his own creation
What? He gave nobody else in his entire production studio creative freedom. Only himself. He oversaw ever aspect of production & gave nobody else a say so. Today Lucasfilm is more free & allows everyone to share their artistic vision & not just one man in charge.
Jesus, there's a ton of evidence that his team changed his mind a lot of the times (The yoda vs clone troopers in Ep.III being one that comes to mind). Please, please, next time, before making a claim, do some research. And that about Lucasfilm being more free, I guess the original director of IX and the first cut of Rogue One disagree with you.

Lucas allowed loads of creative freedom and actors and artists changed his mind many times.

I very much agree. Also the way that the trade federation arent "bad guys", just a major faction in politics with a lot of power, and the war isnt just "there", it escalates from a set of disagreements and skirmishes.
They are made even better when you watch the animated series (which is canon) because you get to see each and every step that the chancellor makes in order to obtain more power

It was the first Star Wars movie I ever saw. I was 2 or something and I was amazed by it. And it was where my love for Star Wars began. Now 20 years later and I still love it.
I don't hate The Phantom Menace. I don't necessarily like it, but I don't think it's nearly as bad as a lot of people make it out to be.

I think the issue people had with the prequels are that they were hyped for them as the first Star Wars films in almost 20 years, so when they ended up being slightly less good than the originals people became disappointed, a feeling which stewed inside them and made them remember their viewing experience as being worse than it actually was and cementing their mind's view of the films as awful.
I'm watching the films in chronological order at the moment and I've really enjoyed the prequels.

I still think they overdid Jar-Jar in Phantom Menace, plus the whole Anakin/Padme subtle romance in AOTC was really full of cheesy dialogue. Beyond that though the Prequels weren't terrible at all
TPM is a warm hug to me, and the Prequel I truly enjoy.

I'll be honest the whole political side of the prequels made the Universe seem so much more expansive and interesting the political side doesn't make it interesting but it makes it feel bigger and more like a grand universe. that's why I like the Prequels the universe seems so much bigger than the original trilogy
And I think that putting little focus on It was the right move because it kept that feeling of vastness while also keeping us interested 😁
You know how people should view it. An example...look at the space ships in the prequels compared to the OT. They are all polished and new while in the OT they look old. That references that in the prequels the industry was better. While when Vader was created everything began to fall down. That's why we don't see much politics in the OT, because politics don't exist anymore as much as before. Lucas knew what he was doing, sadly people can't figure out simple things like that. I also like to mention that the dialogue between Padme and Anakin is cringy for a purpose. The prequels were not represented as modern times, but rather classical times. Hundreds of years ago people who were in love were talking kind of cringy. Also being first time in love and in a relationship after never actually learning about those things is the result of being "cringy". The dialogue is just honest telling of feelings and that's it.
A very popular youtube movie pundit once said who cares about the politics about this movie. He couldn t see that it helped explain the state of things in the originals. I guess he ll enjoy the rehash of the new trilogy where the "rebellion" has become the " resistance". Almost 0 progress in the storytelling after 30 years.
I look at the political stuff as the set-up for Palpatine's arc. Also, world building.
I really missed this in the new trilogy. We know how the republic failed and the empire was born. Some 30 years after the OT, there's apparently a new republic, and some dudes trying to overthrow it. Why? What happened? How did we get from having an empire to having another republic, and why didn't this one work out?

Episode two some EPIC moments though. It had that cool 'zero sound effect' sound effect with those Slave-1 bombs, Anakin's dual wielding lightsaber battle and THE most visually epic lightsaber battle in the franchise to date...Yoda VS Dooku

I've also always enjoyed Maul opening the door behind him by using the force to smash the control panel with debris.

This was the first SW film I saw, I remember it, when I was like 6 or 7 years old. Then I saw the OT, with the childish illusion of see what had happened to Anakin, then I remember when I went to the cinema (my first or second time) to watch AOTC. For me this movie will always be the my first Star war. I fell in love with the podracer competition, I shared Anakin´s feelings with Padme, I cried when Qui-Gon died, I shouted out loud when Obi-Wan cut Darth Maul in half, I´m still getting goose bumps on that word: PEACE. The Phantom Menance will always have a special place inside my heart.

This movie was so underrated. Darth Sidious was a great villain, and the visuals were great. The lightsaber duel was awesome and the music was epic.

It’s why I hated Poe in TLJ. He got 50 people killed in the opening for his own selfish reasons and it’s even more annoying that no one cares other than Leia.

I think this was the first video (four years ago) I ever saw speaking positively about Episode I. I always loved it (first SW movie I ever saw) and it felt great to not feel so alone or silly in enjoying this movie!
I was a kid when the prequels came out and yes I enjoyed them. Padme is still my favourite character from this trilogy and she can be seen as a strong female role model, like Leia before. I like what Cinema wins has done, pointed out more analysis and depth to what kids see as an action movie, which I can now appreciate as an adult

That show was dumbest pre disney move of Star Wars. They destroyed Jedi lore making Anakin having Ahsoka as student although he was no master, they destroyed sith lore making more sith although only two should be. Not Ventress, Savage or other crap. They destroyed Maul because in TPM he was sith who lost because of arrogance and they shouldnt bring him back. Looks of characters is moronic with larger heads and voices sound nothing like those from movies. Clones without helmets looks nothing like those in movies and lightsaber duels are so idiotic with such unrealistic movements that this show should be burned. Only version from 2003 was needed and this is shitfest.

I have so many great memories of the prequels, and iconing scenes from the Phantom menace that I enjoy watching over and over again over the years. Lucas dared to reinvent himself and made another giant leap in the field of CGI. Despite all the bashing, it will be remembered as a milestone in movie history, unlike the already forgotten sequels…

It was an excellent movie, so it's not really that hard.
Another thing to add about your comment on Obi Wan's last battle with Maul is that, if you notice his movements, he actually is enraged at Qui Gon's death. If you noticed before, his swings were smooth and graceful, while here, they're a lot more sharp and snappy. Plus, if you pay close enough attention to his face, Obi Wan looks incredibly pissed off. He may be a Jedi, but he's out for blood, which could be one of the reasons he nearly fell down the shaft.
His usual lightsaber style is one of defensive supremacy. He completely abandons it with Maul and is nearly defeated. The fact that he bested Maul after all is a testament to how skillful he truly was.
In the visual dictionary for tpm there was a note saying obiwan tapped into force rage to win which was a dark side ability in a lot of older games but the dictionaries are always of questionable canon
I grew up watching the first 6 films since I was born, and this is the one I have the most good memories of. Because as a baby I wasnt exactly focused on story nuances and tone, I just wanted to watch the ones with the prettiest colors. Even if I know its not for the best reason, I still hold this movie close to my heart.
Now this seems like a nice way to celebrate Star Wars Day, I think. Watching the whole playlist.

I watched The Phantom Menace at a midnight showing on release day and unashamedly enjoyed most of it from start to finish. Since then, I've found many issues with the film, some of which are unresolvable, but as a film that just rattles along at pace and sows many seeds without ever taking itself too seriously, it still holds together as enjoyable. I can totally understand why people love this movie. I can, unfortunately, see why a lot of people hate it too. But for 2 hours in 1999 it was the first new Star Wars for nearly a generation and for that reason alone it was brilliant.
I was 9 when I went to see this. I always wanted to watch this thing called “Star Wars” as a kid but my parents never rented the OT movies for me. Then TPM came out in theatres, It was the first Star Wars movie I saw and I was in love. I loved this movie as a child and still do as an adult. I’ll always remember the first time I saw it. I went on to see all the other movies and I love the OT and like the current sequel trilogy enough but the prequels will always be my favorite. The prequels had their flaws for sure, but I never understood the hate they got. They have their merits and are a great set of movies, especially with shows like Clone Wars.

Unfortunately I was far too young to watch the prequels (I think I was 1 when RotS was out) but I will never forget the moment I opened up a christmas present and seeing the entire DVD set for both the prequels and originals. THAT was when I first saw Star Wars and my love for it grew ever since. So you can imagine my excitement when I could watch TFA (hint: I was smiling the whole time lol)
I was kind of an idiot I guess when I was younger. I legit didn't know Palpatine was the Emperor until Episode 3. I saw little of the OG Trilogy beforehand.
If it makes you feel better, I forgot the emperor even existed when I was watching these.
I remember rewatching Attack of the Clones with my friend right around when Revenge of the Sith was going to come out and pointing out that Palpatine was obviously the Emperor. Both my friend and his dad were mind-blown by me calling it even though it was obvious to me. I should point out that my friend was the biggest Star Wars nerd I ever knew, so I felt very proud of myself when I realized he really had no idea.

I love/hate how much the impact of Qui-Gon's death reveals itself in later films: if he had lived he not only wouldve been a more secure teacher for Anakin, but he probably wouldve been able to keep the jedi council in moral check for the most part. This only adds to the tragedy of this trilogy.
Sometimes when I’m lonely, and working from home drives me a bit crazy, I queue up the EGA Star Wars playlist and listen to the familiar sounds of Star Wars with the general positivity and calming demeanor of CinemaWins Man. It soothes the soul. Feels like watching it with an older brother or something.

I always knew that Episodes IV-VI were something that never could be recreated, so I wasn't as disappointed by the prequels as so many others were. Also, whatever George got wrong with the prequels, he was trying to tell a new story, not just a version of the old one.
Unlike what Disney's doing now: Recycling the OT ad infinitum.
I have to defend Jar Jar a little - he's someone who was willing to sign away his life to Qui-gon out of respect for his tradition and for Qui-gon saving his life (so he's honorable), was willing to face execution for coming back to the Gungan city to help the Jedi, is constantly trying to converse with others or cheer people up and even has a heart to heart with the Queen on several occasions, and even fought in a war he could have easily died in just a diversion for the sake of his friends and the Naboo.
Jar Jar is written overly comedic and annoying in places, but let's not forget that the guy is a pretty stand up fellow.

I feel like the big "politics" problem of Star Wars Episode 1 & 2 specifically is that there was never really gonna be a way to avoid it.
Keep in mind, at the start in the Phantom Menace the galaxy is basically at peace, so there's no Galaxy-Wide Conflict to drive the plot until the second act of Episode 2 after Obi-Wan discovers the droid factory. Phantom Menace and the early Padme Assassination Attempt plots are really driven by the Jedi doing their duties as peacekeepers rather than Warriors out saving the Galaxy, and it does so real well.
The TL;DR summary of all this is that it's fine to not like Episode 1 & 2 for the slower, more politically driven parts of the plot cause some people just can't stand politics, but it helps show how the galaxy functions during times of peace and the responsibilities of the Jedi during those times.
And if you really hate the Prequels to the point of violent outbursts and twitter rants because Jar-Jar Binks EXISTS, he's barely in Episode 2, and he's mostly just a vocal tag-along during Episode 1, so there really isn't anything I can say to fix that strange fucked-up part of you.
I mean on the jar jar part, one of the most loved characters yoda says it best, “fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering.” The prequel haters true path
Is there really any story out there that can 100% avoid politics in a way? Our life truly depends on politics daily. I don't get how people even *dared* to expect no politics included in the prequels which tried to explain the hows and whys behind the Empire. You'll need politics to maintain a realm fam.

Original trilogy had bad and cheesy acting, inconsistencies and plot holes, Iand of course, those few characters which are in the movie, at times are so annoying, or just bland that it is funny, so i have no idea why people think that those movies are that good.
I dont know about what annoying subplots you are talking about, but all fits perfectly into the story and history of the SW world.

I think Hayden Christensen is literally the best person who could have played Anakin, and he did a great job of it. The problem was the beyond terrible script he was forced to read. And Obi-Wan from 2 and 3 is my single favourite character in the series, just as fun as Han or anyone else.
But Padme was terrible, and every interaction between characters who don't kill each other felt so bland and forced. So much of the movies (especially episode 1) was completely pointless and just didn't live up to the originals.
They're NOT bad movies, they're just not as good as the originals, whether you think those are amazing or not.

The taxation of trade routes thing is so important. At the center of it all is palpatine using it to manipulate the galactic government. Pushing them into desperate situations so bad that in episode three the give him total power.
Thank you!!! It may not be the most engaging of plot elements, however it all ties into Palpatine's eventual use to power and subsequent rearrangement of the republic into the empire, so it does make perfect sense for it to be explored in the prequels.

I actually love that Qui-Gon was very much the focus of the movie. One of my favorite pieces of star wars media when I was a kid was a series of books called Jedi Apprentice about Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon, they were a great way to really build on their relationship and show the flaws of the Jedi system as at one point Obi-Wan actually leaves the Jedi Order to follow the woman he loves, we see the council ignore reports of genocide, and the temple is even inflated by an apprentice turned bad

Anyway I think that Sequels started all wrong without Skywalkers. Star Wars is not what it should be and in legends there are many Skywalkers and lineage goes on.

I liked the prequels. They built up the groundwork for amazing Expanded Universe. Also, I feel like the CG holds up wonderfully
It looks a little PS2 cut-scene-ish in Episode II, but yeah, the CGI is better than some of the stuff you see today. I legitimately think Jar Jar and Watto look better than Maz and Snoke.
And Attack of the Clones proved, without a shadow of a doubt, that everyone in the original trilogy who fought with a lightsaber was a frickin amateur (obviously due to lack of training/practice)

That's what made the sequel trilogy feel a little hollow to me, because we had no framework of the political machinations there was no scope. As an adult I can appreciate the senate scenes in this three movies as they build a bigger world and I understand the size, scale, and stakes.
@@TheLowBrassDude If they wanted it, they could have innovated. There is plenty of material all around about the chaos and power struggles among military cliques, after the death of Sheev. The way they built cannon SW made it be physically impossible. I mean, how the greatest armada of like, ever, was defeated by rebel-scale forces in a couple years?
Also, with all the backlash of the prequels, I'm sure Disney was afraid to bring up politics again in the sequels. Honestly, if anything, that's what's wrong with Star Wars and why the movies seem to be getting worse (though they really aren't). People complain about something that shouldn't be complained about and the script for future movies get affected since now those complaints want to be avoided. Some good plot points are avoided (like the thing with Darth Jar Jar I guess?) and we have movies trying to erase what previous movies did.

Yep, in that case it would be a good call to make future movies significantly different than the original, so Star Wars would provide something new, since it can't outdo the originals. Also, it makes little sense for a movie to "ruin" Star Wars, since, as CinemaWins puts it, the OT isn't going away any time soon. You can still go back and watch them.

I loved the prequels as well. It makes me so sad to think of all the hatred these movies get. Bizarrely, the OT also gets a lot of negative comments. Those tend to be focused on ROTJ, though. Seriously, at what point did people start hating the Ewoks? I only really started hearing about that since the rise of the internet, particularly RUclips.
But with the release of TFA last year, I understood what people's problems with the PT were: they just wanted the OT again, but got something new and different. People didn't like the change. They weren't in touch with the spirit of what Star Wars was, they just wanted what they'd *seen* before.
I for one think, particularly with the PT, Lucas did a brilliant job recreating a classic SF serial for the modern age.
well even phantom menace borrowed alot from new hope, stop me if youve heard this one before, old jedi master rescues female royalty from an evil army of identical looking soilders with the help of a young human from a desert planet while fighting a bad guy with a red lazer sword dressed in all black lead by a misterious figure, the bad guys are then ultimatly defeted by a single piolt shooting proton tropedos at the main reactor of a large gry space ship which then ends in a award ceremony. thats litterally the plot of 3 of the 8 live action star wars movies, people didnt not like phantom menace because it wasnt similer to the ot because it was basicly new hope again (same as force awakens) . people didnt like phantom menace because of the bland action, bland acting, bland enviroments (gungan village is an exception), terrible child acting and the fact it breaks cannon in certian areas.
joshua powell How can you say the action in TPM "bland"? It was the most impressive action ever seen in a Star Wars movie. George Lucas often used the poetry analogy. In a lot of poetry, there are structural similarities between stanzas, and quite often rhymes. TPM (and as well as most of the films in the franchise) has this rhyming going on. TFA to me went beyond rhyming, with what seemed like a simple copy-pasting of the "first" verse.
And breaks canon? TPM expanded the universe as we understand it. In what ways do you think the film breaks canon?

There was little hate for the Ewoks in the mid 80s and ANH still reigned far-and-away as most peoples' favorite episode. IMO, it wasn't until the late 90s that there seems to have been a more significant adult-centric distaste of Ewoks and a darkened delight for favoring ESB.
I feel like I am one of the only persons who actually was never bothered by the Medi-chlorians. This is story takes place in a highly civilized world with very advanced technology, so of course there would have been studies about the force to figure out how some is able to use it while others aren't. And as you said in this video it was established in the original trilogy that the force is genetic, Vader could even sense Luke was strong in the force at the battle of Yavin, despite Luke at that point only had been practicing it for couple of hours in the Falcon. The Medi-Chlorians fit perfectly into Star Wars as story is a story about seeing things from a certain point of view. The Medi-Chlorians is just the scientific point of view, it doesn't rob the force of its mystery as we through the all the movies and the clone wars learn more and more about the force and that there are manifistations of the force. Even Yoda learned more about the force that he didn't understand before.
I think "midichlorians" would have been more acceptable if they had been a sort of benign genetic marker, a mutation in the individual's body, perhaps one that alters the body chemistry slightly. Something internal that makes them more resonant with the Force, rather than what amounts to an external galactic sized swarm infesting a few hosts here and there. We have photoreceptors in our eyes to receive light and interpret visual information, the midichlorians should have just been Force-receptors somewhere in our brain.
Don't try and explain the Force, but I think it would have been ok to explain how someone is _connected_ to the Force.

That opening, panning, shot of that ship I love! It's a seemingly nondescript beginning to a stunning story and series of films! (ending with Return Of The Jedi)
Clone wars is cannon and maul is insane in it so I’m not mad that he “died” in this movie
Is years since this came out, and a couple of days ago, when i was watching this with my father, i notice how Darth Mauls is always trying to mantain Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon behind each other, and in the moment they surround him he move away from them, is a wonderful way to display not only the skill of Maul, but his cunning as warrior because no matter how good you are, you don't want to be sorrounded.
(Probably is much less that and more "look cool in that way" but, come on, headcanon born for this)

aMAX Animations Cinemasins are assholes (and they acknowledge this frequently), which is what makes them so popular, because most of the internet are also assholes. Personally I prefer this channel

I'm glad I found these videos, very good points. I have seen SW chronologically so I didn't experience the vast difference of styles between the two eras but what made me love the franchise was how the story progressed and the characters were unique and interesting (discounting the obvious comic reliefs). Sadly once Disney came aboard they felt they needed to copy the more successful era and delivered something too familiar to surprise and entertain viewers who saw all the previous films more than once.
Maul is one of my favorite villains of all time..like in general. So when he came back in the Clone Wars Series I almost lost my mind. He is just so interesting and his hate for Obi Wan (who is my favorite Jedi) makes it all the better. I wish he has more screen time in this movie but what happened to him made those few Clone Wars Episodes AMAZING!
Another cool detail in the film: at the ending, the song being played during the victory parade is actually Palpatine's theme in a different key, which makes the ending much more sinister as it shows that Palpatine has successfully made his first move towards becoming the Emperor
Rebels also did this for the Imperial March and turned it into a parade celebration theme
