Gotta love how the American police love NOT solving mysteries SO much that they are willing to put their failures on Netflix.
dan wheeler this was more than just an embarrassing failure.. you see the facial expressions that Jerry Clark who was one of the lead FBI investigators on the case.. I mean he’s really embarrassed but doesn’t even care
It's like they intentionally withheld evidence from each other to make the other department look bad. They mentioned a power struggle between the departments to be in charge.
And to the fact that those investigators confessed that they had been manipulated all along. It's like a chess game that the government officials were Pawns and the murderers and co., were the Horse, Bishop, King, and Queen all along.
What a turn around. I LOVE AMERICA!

While watching the documentary my boyfriend and I realized that Brian is burried at cemetery we take walks at often, tonight we took a walk and found his grave to pay our respects. So very sad and tragic that this happened to a guy like him.

i just finished watching the documentary i feel so bad for Brian wells and his family , he never got justice , and i dont care if he was involved in the heist or not no one deserves to die in this way , he seem like a very innocent guy

He was in on it. 1 specific reason... Him and a conspirator both said black guys jumped and put the collar on him. If he wasn't involved why lie about who put the collar on him at the point of police presence? He could easily told the truth and said who actually put it on him. Why lie if you're not involved? Brian Wells was not a victim. I believe he didn't think the bomb was real and that they'd outsmart the police
I cannot figure out why he didn't use the shotgun/cane to force them to take it off if he was totally innocent? Plus, why he didn't just drive straight to the police station and ask for the bomb squad??

I watched it yes with so called law enforcement squabbling over jurisdiction info not given at the right time and before anything else they should brought in the bomb squad when the call came in .
I felt like they accept every snitches to close the case..Snitches in prison are willingly say anything to get their time reduce.
As someone who lives in Erie, let me tell you, this shit got NUTS the more the case unfolded.

This case got crazy as it unfolded no matter where you live. Living in Erie doesn't make you more informed or effected than anyone any where else in the country. Sowell killed so many women here where I live don't mean I have inside Intel more than anyone else in the country.

His situation being so helpless even sorrounded by the authority who kept pointing gun on him even tho he was fully cooperating.😔😔😔 Also there was media. i really feel sorry for this man whether he is used or completely innocent. no one could save you in times like that.

I think that the same thing happened in Zodiac murders. Police investigation focused on the same thing for too long, didn't shared evidences and compete between each others. It take someone to look from outside and start the process again, with another point of vue.

Superb and mind blowing. I feel so sorry for Wells and his family. No matter whether he was involved in the heist or not. He was killed in cold blood and no one did anything to help him. The FBI and the ATF were as usual completely useless. Bunch of idiots.
Wells himself didn't believe the bomb was real. The tone in his voice didn't come off as someone who was fearing for their life, he actually thought they had placed a fake. He got double-crossed to kill off as many witnesses as they could. Seems like that's what actually went down.

Jacky J I live in Erie. I was here when this happened. I remember the live news showing the bomber in a close up. He kept saying, "You gotta get it off me! It's a BOMB! I don't have the key! I DON'T HAVE A KEY!!! IT'S GONNA GO OFF!!!!"
After watching the whole series I think William Rothstein was someone like Walter white(Breaking Bad). Probably after knowing that he had Cancer, he and Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong might have decided to do the heist. They wanted to do it not for money but for other reasons, they wanted to show the world how smart they are. Marjorie already had a history of getting away with a murder, and on top of that, she made money out of a murder that she commited, from this she learned that she can outsmart the juditiary system and get away with anything. And she enjoyed getting attention and she wanted to be famous. Thats must be reason why William called 911 to report on Marjorie as planned by Marjorie and him. So that they would have the control of the whole situation before Police reaches them, they knew that Police would come for them sooner or later. They dint want both to be in jail. Marjorie wanted William to be outside since his days were comming to and end. She on the otherhand, at jail enjoyed manupulating Police, juditiary system as well as the public. They both recruited the others by convincing them that it was a real heist. They are the victims here. Brian Wells acted cool at the bank since he thought that the bomb was fake and he believed in the couple. He only realised the facts in his final moments. Marjorie has always been confident only because William is the only person otherthan her who knows about the real plan and she trusted William 100% and William also had that samr trust. Like William's brother said, William and Marjorie was in a psych realationship. They committed those murders together and planned the heist and executed it for their own reasons. Finally, she told the inmates about the details of heist since she wanted the world to know that she was the mastermind. Amf the system cannot make her accountable for that. She always presented herself as evil. In her own words she said she is not somekind of evil genius. But the fact is she herself considered her as an evil genius. She and william were indeed evil genius. Keeping her in jail and his cancer must have saved many lives which would have lost if they were together outside. The take away from the whole tragedy is the flaws in the system which exists now. This is totaly just my point of view after watching the series.
Agree with you 100%. I'm now watching this docuseries and I found it strange that brian wells was too cool in the bank, taking a lollipop from the bowl and not panicking. Even the detective said he was calm until the bomb started ticking and believed up until that moment, wells thought the bomb was fake. He was in on it, just didn't know the masterminds had no intention of sharing the loot and because of the distance he had to drive back with the loot, he would have been killed anyway. It's sad how things unfolded but it also showed that there are consequences for one's actions. He should have never agreed to be a part of this heist.

The cops waited way too long when Brian wells told them someone strapped a live bomb to him. They didn’t believe him and watched as the poor guys head was blown away
Nothing they could do... The bomb was constructed to be hard to remove even by a expert and was rigged even if it was removed. Wells had no chance of living once it was locked to his neck. There were 4 key holes and a 3 digit combination lock, on top of fake wires, a cell phone taped inside the bomb also fake to trick someone trying to defuse it and only a 20 minute timer. By the time the first cop arrived on seen he probably had like 10 minutes left and the bomb squad was 15 mins away.
chris james but it wasn’t set to go off from tampering from what I remember. If they REALLY wanted to go 100% and saw it off of his neck there’s guys in the bomb units that are trained for that. It’s a tough situation overall I just hated seeing the poor pizza guy get obliterated for no reason

Typically I would agree with you, however, this was not the case here. These people definitely spent a good amount of time coming up with this. They thought of everything. Law enforcement would have never figured this out if Rothstein would have never called the cops about the guy in the freezer.

It was a good show. I enjoyed it. But I disagree with the so called hightened intelligence of the people involved. I think the reason they skated by for so long was the lack of shared knowledge between the different law enforcement departments.

This documentary was absolutely one of the best I've seen in a long time. I'm glad I watched it because it was fascinating and moving in so many ways. I'm still processing it so I don't really know how to properly explain it so I'll just say this:

These people weren't geniuses if they thought they could get a quarter million from a bank teller
The weird thing is, I don't even think the money was the main motive. I think it was Marjorie wanting to get back at the bank for letting her father take the valuables that she deemed hers as an inheritance. Remember, she was not all there, but like a sick master chess player, was able to plan many steps ahead and hide her true motives. She was also a deranged narcissist it seems. Anyway, ultimately, I think in this case, she wanted to have her father murdered and have the bank get robbed. Think about this, if they knew that the bomb that Brian Wells had on his neck would explode AND they sent him on an impossible scavenger hunt, then did they think they would ever get the money? Maybe they thought they would find Brian's body at the first clue and their scavenger hunt, and that is why Bill Rothstein's blue van was seen by the black officer. Rothstein and Armstrong were coming to get the money off Well's corpse. So maybe they did think they would get some money, but to me the main motive of Majorie Armstrong was revenge, and she used the money as leverage to manipulate Bill Rothstein, who needed the money. The whole thing is truly bizarre, but remember, it all is funneled through the twisted, narcissistic mind of Armstrong. (Also another crazy thing is remember that I think it was Brian's mom said he was very good at scavenger hunts and enjoyed participating in them. Well...what better way to build Brian's confidence than to tell him that to get the bomb off his neck, he would just have to participate in a scavenger hunt? This could also be why he might have seemed relaxed in the bank. He might have even thought the bomb was fake. )
@@BrianKiddDevDesign I agree, I think it was just a manipulative element used to get more partners in, and to confused the police even more, dont forget that they freezed the body for no reason when they could have just thrown it away somewhere, and going back to point zero....why did bill for real call the police by then? it was the final straw to start this all, he may have wanted to bring revenge on marge since she rejected him since he knew he is going to die anyways at the end, I dont think he wanted the money either on his house, since quarter of a million is too high and he knew it, I dont think they would ignore the fact either that obviously they cant get that much money from a cashier(they only got 8k in the end), looks like it was just to delay it all and shut his sibilings cries

After completing he doc .. it feelz so upsetting that aftter so many years brian didnt got the justice. He wasnt talked about much nd it looked like as if no one cared about his death. Watching margie shouting and screaming made my headache all through the doc. I just wish there was an episode all about brian and his life. Seeing him lying in the middle of road wailing and begging the cops about the bomb beeping was so disturbing. No one was helping him at the time . No ambulance was there . It feels so sad that his family had to see the whole thing .
I believe he was threatened into accusing Black men of putting the bomb around his neck. For example they could’ve told him the bomb around his neck had a microphone and if they did not hear him say that they would set off the bomb

I think Jessica Hoopsick genuinely believes that Brian Wells knew nothing of the heist and that the money she accepted was to set him up when in actuality it was just to help them establish a connection. I think he did go to the meeting the day before with his fellow employee so they could both set up the plan to ensure that whenever the call for the pizza delivery came thru there would be no interruptions. There was a reason why the owner of the pizza place "couldn't understand" the native English speaking caller, yet Brian Wells could as soon as he took the phone- to ensure that the owner couldn't identify the caller. I think Brian got cold feet when he arrived and that's why they slapped him to get him to comply with them putting on the collar, and that he was to be paid for the pizza so the people who ordered it wouldn't be fingered by the police if their identities were discovered. They wanted to make it look like "some black guys" trapped Brian Wells. There was a reason why he ate the lollipop WHILE he was robbing the bank- because he wasn't scared, which points to the idea that he had no clue that it was a real bomb. He was awfully calm even down to the seconds before it exploded. His comment, "I'm not lying" doesn't fit with the level of stress an innocent person would be dealing with in that moment. Poor Brian Wells had no idea that he was going to be killed so they didn't have to share the money and it was one less witness, but it doesn't mean he wasn't part of the plot to rob the bank.
Correct and if he was not involved in it he'd have solved the case then and there only, remember how he said when he was on the ground that "it was some black guys" who did it to him, when a normal person would have totally snitched on these people if they were not involved but he went with the plan and misguided cops that it was some black guys as he was told to do.
Yes, there is no doubt in that, that he never knew it was a real bomb and that could make him an innocent victim here but we can't deny the fact that he was involved in the crime.
Why to pretend to order a pizza? I mean if he was a part of the plan, which it actually seem he was then why to go through this route? This is not making sense to me.

Also I think Marge and Bill and maybe the other guys also agreed to make it a real one so that in case if he gets caught by cops, it’ll explode, so no witness.

@@FootballislifeShrey The pizza guy is supposed to be innocent, he is supposed to stop the bomb and when police question him he'd just say he's a pizza delivery man following instructions. He would have handed over the money to the gang. Police would have to release him because he's innocent. But then the plotters think, why not make the bomb real and eliminate him as a witness altogether? And then Brian Wells figured the same: they might have made the bomb real, so he deliberately foiled the robbery, did not hand them the money. But he was in doubt and did not think fast enough to find help to disable the bomb.
Thank you. I was starting to think everyone in this comment section was brain dead. I also said you could piece together their admitted confessions and immediately tell what actually happened. Especially when Brian and Ken both said to blame the collar placement on black guys. How would Brian know to say what Ken confessed had they never met? I also think the robbery was a ploy to deter police from Marge killing her boyfriend because the instructions had him still in the area during the scavenger hunt after the robbery. Why would they have Brian circle the bank. That don't sound like they intended on getting the money? I thought the same that Brian but off more then he could chew but too late to back out. The lollipop symbolized his arrogance in knowing he was going to get away. He didn't even look nervous or try to signal for help in the bank. If it's timed I'm not wasting time in a bank. I'm driving straight to the police station.

Im a erie local, and I was in 9 grade when it happened. I remember being genuinely scared that someone was out there that did this. I really enjoyed the doc, learned a lot about it that I didnt know

Just finished this and it was amazing.
I was SO unsatisfied with the way this ended. I was really waiting for that BIG reveal and final confession from Marj, what a bitch. Jessica did Brian so dirty too like she even confessed and still wasn’t charged? There was no justice served for Brian Wells whatsoever, poor man. I feel for his family :(
This is where Netflix shines. Looks like another brilliant documentary

I miss Eerie Indiana, although it technically had a reboot in 98 called the other dimension. But it lost its thunder with a new cast and by not being directed by Joe Dante

Wow just wow, amazing doc. Beats making a murderer even tho MAM is longer and shows a bit more of the actual court footage this story is amazing and worth the watch.

This is so tragic. I just finished watching this series on netflix. I can't believe that I either forgot about this case or never heard of it. I highly recommend watching it. I thought it was just about about a bank heist but it so much more than that. There's so many layers as the mystery of it all unravels. It's scary that it is hard to truly know somebody and in reality you never really know what a person is thinking.
i vaguely remember this because I was only 11 but I remember it being in the Philadelphia news. So looking forward to this. I wonder if this is a full documentary or a docu-series.

tevin_pa9551 While you wait for this to be released, give The Confession Tapes a shot. Amazing and heartbreaking stuff. Some innocent people got coerced by police to confess to serious crimes they had zero evidence to prove. Left bad taste in my mouth but I enjoyed it.

I watched all 4 episodes & I know the Jessica admits to setting him up BUT one question for me STILL remains... If he really didn't know about it & was really a victim, how come he went into that bank so "nonchalantly" & even grabbed a lollipop to suck on?
This documentary did an amazing job at pointing out questions and answering every single one of them throughout the 4 episodes but this is the ONE thing they didn't address... I mean we could just assume he was told to act normally (by Rothstein and Marjorie) but I feel like when you're forced to rob a bank with a bomb around your neck you wouldn't be able to act so normally as to suck on a lollipop while waiting to rob the bank... anyone have any insight on this?
Other than that, this was one of the best documentaries I've seen.
Also, Ruthsteins biggest downfall was himself. He claimed to have been the smartest man, but if it wasn't for his voluntary phone call to the police about Marjorie killing that guy they left in the freezer, this case would have probably remained a mystery... Unreal to think she had that much hold on him throughout the years & he so willingly ended up fucking her over.
Plus in his suicide note it said this has nothing to do with the Brian Mills case so was it a touch of guilt that made him write that

i think he tought it wasnt a real bomb, but its still weird. i do think brian wasnt a 100% there or he had a childs mind at the very least.
it could be that he just doesnt take situations as seriously as grown men would do.
like when that bomb started ticking he did seem a bit agitated but still calm by my standards because i would be shitting my pants at that point.

I just completed it & man what an epic docuseries it has blown my mind such twists and turns. People who outsmarted legal authorities. Died keeping their innocence while protected others secrets. It is awesome gives you a lot to think about

Shady B can YOU read? The show takes place in the 60s.. This happened in 2003. The crime didn't happen for another 40 years.
But he isnt caught in the show and the time frame still matches.
Lately, I feel like Netflix contents don't live up to my standard like HBO's, etc. But this latest Netflix documentary is gripping and heartstopping. It grabbed my attention like a crime novel that you can not stop reading and end up finish reading it in one night. A big bravo to the Netflix this time.

Just so y'all know- in the doc it is pretty graphic and they actually show the bomb going off and the man exploding and dying. They do blur it but I was not prepared for the goriness of this film so just warning my fellow babies who hate scary things!
same, pretty horrified at how graphic it was and I closed my eyes every time I thought something else would be graphic after that
Im late but srsly, everytime they would show brian on the screen i would shut my eyes frightened they were gonna show the bomb go off once again. It wasnt as as detailed and graphic compared to others I have seen (given its also blurred) but still gave me the chills.
Love it when I see that something good is gonna be in Netflix the day after I first heard about it.

I swear every time they do the fade away of her face from when she was young to when she got old, I get the chills.
I used to watch Americas most wanted when I was a kid when my dad watched it....and I remembered this case from when they aired it more than any others I saw.....it was just that so diabolical and scary to me that someone who did something so evil was still out there. Wasn't aware that they had made discoveries in the case until i saw this trailer.
That being said, just finished the documentary in 2 days and although I think it's likely that Brian wasn't in on the initial planning.....I still have one question: If he had no idea of the heist until they forced the collar onto him, Why would he follow the order to tell the cops while on the ground that it was some black guys who did it?? I get that they said they'd be watching him, but of course the police wouldn't have let anyone within earshot of him.....so why not go ahead & tell them what the people really looked like....especially when the drug dealer was there when they put it on him & and he knew who he was or at least who he was connected to, even where he lived. Brian himself with just a sentence or two prior to death could've helped the police solve the case within a day......so that makes me wonder......if the word of the hooker saying he was completely innocent was reliable or not (she could maybe have been lying just to get back at Marjorie in prison who likely had someone beat her ass while she was there, for snitching). I still think since it's kind of indisputable that he was forced to put on the collar , Marjorie and company should've been charged with murder regardless.
Not in the initial planning but was played. He was going to get a cut and was told the bomb was fake in case he got caught, that way he can claim to be innocent. The bomb was real to eliminate any chance of him telling the truth.
Trestres 23 I think maybe you didn't see the entire thing or one of us heard wrong.....but from my understanding...their "conclusive findings" was that he didn't know anything about it until he was ambushed delivering the pizza. They simply ignored the person who said they saw him coming from the evil lady's place prior.....and took the word of the hooker who said he knew nothing about what was gonna happen. I think its a possibility he did know about it like you said....and though it was a fake....otherwise why didn't he tell the cops what the people who strapped it to him really looked like (he instead told them they were black).......i think he could've told them the lie he was ordered to tell just to cover his own ass for the robbery .........and the hooker could have claimed him innocent of knowledge from guilt of getting him involved to begin with (he could be the father of her child) and also because she could've wanted to get back at 'Marge' because she had her beaten when she was in prison.....(if the cops thought he didn't even know the bank was gonna be robbed, then Marge could be charged with murder instead of just conspiracy) ......that being said.....that is not the conclusion they came to and they say he wasn't in on the plan (or any perceived plan) at all. Guess we'll never know for sure.

Maybe the bomb had an attached audio speakers and the criminals threatened to detonate the bomb if they hear him violate the instructions given to him?

This was so haunting and terrible. Could not stop thinking about for days after I watched it. It was so bizarre how it unfolded. I feel so bad for Mr. Wells and his family. The only thing he was guilty of was being too mild mannered and not fighting and fending off these assholes. Such a shame. Hope all of these evil jerks rots in hell. It was senseless.
An extremely intriguing case. I remember the heist but didn’t know the rest of the case. Well done documentary. Worth watching!
