Ahrex - Caddis Larva - tied by Jan De Haas

  • As fly tyers, we often try to imitate the fish's natural food items - sometimes we tie flies that provoke the fish and other times we tie super-realistic imitations where it can be very difficult to tell the difference between the tied fly and the live individual. We have had the skilled Dutch fly tyer and fly fisherman Jan De Haas in the studio several times, and when we saw a fantastically realistic caddis larva in his fly box, we persuaded him to tie this fantastic variation of Oliver Edwards Caddis Larvae, which imitates the Rhyacophila larva. This fly is actually bound to be fished, but there are probably few who would sacrifice such a work of art at the end of a thin leader, but it is craftsmanship of the highest class.

Hi Mr. Haas, what an awesome pattern. I've been tying for 50+ years and this was not an easy pattern to tie but with patience I pulled it off. So cool.thank you sir.😊

I'd honestly be afraid to fish with that it looks so good. Some fly tyers are just different when it comes to tying.

Yes, I quite agree. Some don't clean the crud from under their fingernails & still lick their fingers , while some are nicely manicured knowing they are displaying them for all the world to see. I tie more than 1 and I save the best of the bunch for display.

Awesome tie & showmanship, although I was thinking of the tune by Steely Dan "Won't You Smile for the Camera." Thank you Sir for sharing all, and if Ahrex makes you wear that #@%**& full shirt, they should provide you with a decent tying lamp to ease eyestrain. I will tie this beautiful Caddis Larva here in Eastern Canada.

It is flytying-art in its finest form - still a fly to be fished, but I would proberbly use a bit thicker leader than normal ;-)

Where on earth are there caddies larva that BIG? Just back from New Zealand and caught some good trout on caddies larva patterns, size 14 and 16. 25 years ago in UK, reservoir nymph patterns were often size 12 long shanks, but today the norm is short shank, 12 but more 14s. I don’t see the big bug hatches that I used to. Size 6 makes it easier to demonstrate fly tying, but I doubt this could be scaled down. So, where is it for?

Hi Chris. Thanks for your respond, and I agree. This fly can for sure fool a fish - even in this size. But it is more meant for a display-fly with all the small fine details in the tying of this super-realistic fly. All the fine details would go missing if tied on a size much smaller and more real-sized. This is a fly for fish, but proberbly more for flyfishers 🙂

Great video. One question what are the small brushes he is applying the UV resin with? The look like they work a lot better than my toothpicks I use.

It's not impossible, it's just easier to film something like this with a bigger hook
