Video Summary
-WordPress 6.5 releasing on March 26, 2024 with big updates like native custom fonts, pattern overrides, and potential native mega menus
-A small but major update relates to the default Gutenberg cover block no longer cropping background images by default when resizing
-In WordPress 6.4, the cover block would zoom and crop images to maintain proportions and fit text, but cut off images
-WordPress 6.5 adds a new "aspect ratio" setting to lock in aspect ratios for cover blocks to avoid cropping
-This maintains image proportions without cutting images off as the screen resizes, improving image presentation while adapting layout
Nice addition. Thanks for showing this to us. Do you know if button states - default, hover, and focus - will be part of 6.5? Having these settings in the Style Book would be so much better than having to add these in theme.json. Accessibility…
Wonderful getting the aspect ratio for the cover block. I have had a problem in 6.4 with the zoom in image producing blurry images on smaller cover blocks. I don't always want a full screen version! I have been trying to make cover blocks look ok on blog posts with little success. Thanks for your update.
Yup i'm really please about this one :)
Yes I've seen ratio pop up in galleries, and glad it's on cover blocks now...becauase it was always a pain trying to create galleries that had the same size images!
👍
What great addition. Thank you for sharing this.
Thanks Tim, i really like this one too :)
That is huge for me! Thanks for letting us know.
For me too :)
Glad to know they're working on making it mobile friendly. Sir if you remember we had a small conversation in comments about it😊
Yup 😀
Thanks, Jamie. Duly noted.
Glad it was helpful!
good to know Jamie. Thanks
Me too, this solves many problems :)
That intro music.... mhmmm, it always gets me in the mood...
Glad you like it ❤️
Attentively of you and a very welcome feature.
Yup I'm looking forward to this one 👍
The most cool feature that nobody talks is the Interactivity API that comes on 6.5 - Game changer
Yup, any ideas on how to make that tangible in a video?
@@jamiewp I guess this is your job, take some ideas from Astra youtube channel that did the same and Admin bar. 😏
That's neat... Thanks Jamie
👍
As always, great content. Thanks!
Thanks Nasir 👍
I gave up on the Cover Block ages ago because I use a photos with a specific aspect ratio because it's the right photo....I'll try it again in 6.5
Great to hear - it's one of my favourite blocks
Thanks for your great reviews, as always😊
My pleasure!
Thanks Jamie! Nice feature. Could you please make a video about the creation of custom fields? I wonder if we will be able to create them easily without additional plugins such as Metabox or ACF.
Yup it's on the list btw you can already create custom fields in WordPress without a plugin - but at the moment you'll need a plugin to display them in Gutenberg - check out the meta block plugin :)
@@jamiewp Thanks I didn't know about it.
Thank you
👍
Does anyone know if the Guttenberg plugin has the Cover block feature already?
Yup it does
Which hosting service do u think is the best?? I need a service, please!!
Thanks so much for this news. I watch your videos with interest.
I have a question for you: I wonder when "Custom Field Block" will arrive? I think this is a huge shortcoming. There are actually various add-ons on this subject, but naturally it should be added to posts in blocks in WordPress. What do you think about this? Will WordPress developers work on this issue soon?
Hi, it won't be a block , but you'll be able to assign custom fields to existing core blocks (from what i understand)
Thank you @@jamiewp
Love it!
👍
If you set a focal point (object-position or background-position) that is much more efficient as it scales into the appropriate part of the object or image when used in cover. With aspect ratio, one has to worry about overflow, but I used it often as well (in code).
Check out the end of the video :)
@@jamiewp I actually overlooked that, what's the browser, by the way.
@@maxziebell4013 Vivaldi but also Arc has this now
@@jamiewp True, I switched to Arc recently. Still finding my way around.
@@maxziebell4013 I'm with you on that
My favorite feature… if all works as expected: pattern overrides 🤩
Yup agreed
can this be enabled on the group block as well?
Not yet :(
This is great, because I've had to make several media queries in the past to make a cover image retain its aspect ratio. Has 6.5 been released?
It's schedule for the 26th March 👍
I wonder if the new media manager is coming in 6.5. I’ve noticed that some well established plugins are not updated to 6.4 yet. So at this rate they will end up being two versions behind.
I'll do some digging for my full WordPress 6.5 review
Niiiiice! I was having that issue!
💪
To be close to the classic builders (for ex. Kadence or others) it still lacks the possibility of viewing a block on desktop/tablet/mobile
Yup for now you'll need to use the fab Block Visibility Plugin wordpress.org/plugins/block-visibility/
wait, I missed the announcement of mega menu coming in 6.5.
where can I see the announcement?
You can follow the Github discussion here github.com/WordPress/developer-blog-content/issues/197
@@jamiewp thanks! although it seems it didn’t make to 6.5b1. do you think it will be included in the next betas?
Aspect Ratio… very important!
For sure 👍
which browser do you use in the video ?
Vivaldi but also the Arc Browser can do this (and Arc are doing some cool things)
Thanks @@jamiewp
I wasn't aware of Vivaldi..I'm on Big Sur so i cannot have Arc easily but i will try it when i upgrade my Mac because the real estate gain is nice to have.
@@jacopomarrone8059 👍
comparison was not properly done. 6.5 version has more text than 6.4.
?
I think what he meant is that some text has been added on the image in 6.5 compared to 6.5 (check at timestamp 3:44 for a better glimpse) 👌🏽 not a huge deal I think?
Great functionality indeed! Thanks for sharing
@@Personne414 tks - understood 👍 6.4 crops with or without text. Maybe I should have been clearer 😬
Finally another fix that catches Wordpress up to where other website builders have been for years already. Wordpress is slow but at least it is finally moving forward in the right direction.
It certainly is 👍
That's neat... Thanks Jamie
thanks Richard
