Have an aluminum box built for the overcab to house shovels, mats, kayaks, and chainsaws, tecovery straps etc.Have the inside of the box sprayed with linex to eliminate aluminum oxide from getting everything stored dirty. I have a Pro-tech aluminum box with linex inside and have had it on two trucks over the last 15 years nice to retrieve clean tools free of aluminum oxide.

I heard some good ideas but I have two additional. One; Have a barrier added to the bed to prevent rolling out. Two; It's not needed but with the cab access as you described add some grab bars, especially a horizontal bar, on the cabin side, above the opening (swing into cab) ;-)

Loved that last one on the military truck. That thing is a beast. Only thing is , I'll bet it'll only get 4 1/2 maybe 5 mpg. Are you sure you wouldn't want more fuel than 100 gal. Myself I'd want 150 minimum, 200 prefered, if weight capacity's would allow it. You'll be places that may be harder to get fuel than the Alcan in January. I'm sure you know what I mean by that referance.

Might want to make sure you run the numbers on the 6x6 vs the 4x4. The 4x4 from what I understand does not exactly have a lot of payload, and for an expo vehicle you want to be well under GVWR, for safety reasons and less fatigue. Also, watch that height, especially outside the USA.

Many Europeans come to Alaska with these type RV's. It's my belief that Europeans are use to smaller spaces and these work out well for adventurous off-road types that travel the world and not just paved highways of the US.

I haven't looked into this type of vehicle myself, so I am surprised to see so many different manufactures out there. No wonder it's a tough decision.
Will they let you take them out for a test drive?
Shopping for a 4x4 with that kind of price tag I would want to actually experience their handling at highway speeds and off road.
    Good Luck.

PS. I sew very weak welding seams on the frame (at 6:18, 10:50, 10:53). Welding seam should looks like seam, not like a point. It's the frame, not a sheet body with spot welding.

Not sure why you think you need so much storage.. You know what the saying is; those who travel the most carry the least. I know it's different but I travel with 6kg (Unless where I'm going is actually freezing), Same with my RV,, there's so much you don't need.. I'm also agreeing with the comments about looking at a Euro based Truck - IN a BIG WAY.. It might be too late now but the fit, finish, durability and resale would be a huge influence for me - Plus you're going to get way more fuel millage and that's a huge consideration IF you're going around the world. Good Luck

Lot's of research! There are areas that you want be able to drive those vehicles due to weight and height. In Europe small narrow streets in most of Europe but there are autobons (spelling) and larger highways. In the Far East we had to have escorts for vehicles that large and most roads were one lane outside cities. Lot's to think about and lot's of logistics to work out 🤔

if i was was in the market for a Plan B solution I would have a cab escape option in both the drivers cab and the living area of the cab
though personally with addition of a 5th wheel my guess would be have an option of a forward base, and do exploring without towing though still have an option of a eating space on the vehicle

I'd opt for no bathroom sink and a bathroom that is totally sealed on the floor and walls with the toilet actually being in the shower stall like some sail boats have. There is already a sink in the kitchen area, I just don't see a need in the bathroom in a small space. Need to have onboard air compressor and put solar heated water tubes on top. Winch would be a must and a tire lift as those tires are extremely heavy. I've seen these in Alaska with a motorcycle lift on the back in a sort of small garage like box.

    • @russell4788
      @russell4788 7 лет назад +1

Their plan is to go composting with the toilet and those need a dry space to work effectively. So a wet bath wouldn't be an option.

    • @drew8642

akbychoice when your in a strange place with real hazards you’d want a bathroom instead of going out at night or otherwise. Self containment is very practical when traveling abroad.

I'm not sure how much these cost ? but you really should look at the European expedition vehicles from MAN or Mercedes. far superior in design, construction and reliability . and buid quality . if your traveling around the world go with a European engine, not a North American. leaps and bounds ahead in technology reliability and ease of servicing

    • @abmbarry
      @abmbarry 6 лет назад +3

I totally agree Justin. The US built units are very 70's and look like back-yard builds when compared to whats being offered.
And yes! their engines are woeful by comparison! Here in Australia; .. Unimog, IVICO plus Japanese and South Korean vehicles are the go-to for rugged outback work. US don't last and Jeep is a joke over here!

I would have to disagree with you there. as far as parts being easier overseas, yes. reliable, no! I was an over the road truck driver for years. and as far as reliable, I have seen way to many issues with the foreign market diesels. if they are going with a frieghtliner chassis, that has a Cummins or a Detroit, even Cat, they are million miles motors with no matainence. remember they are going with an older chassis before Def fluid, those are Bullet proof. so as far as parts overseas they will have that same issue with Mercedes here.

Idk guys I'm not feeling it. Seems a little small anyone who has had an rv have always wished they had gone bigger. Little storage that's going to be an issue and no slide outs and small bed. Motor is very loud even when in the cab, on the long haul days that could be very annoying. Waking up in the middle of the night and having to crawl over your sleeping wife to go to the bathroom and then coming back to crawl over to get back in bed can also be an issue. Windows look high and small, when sitting in your chairs you will probably have no views.
400 lb tires is crazy and repairs may require lots of heavy lifting with tools that can't be stored on the rv.

Hi there in the USA. I watched the video with the couple & two doggies showing you their Euro built Merc. Have you thought about buying in Europe? I don't know what the US built trucks cost,.. however, they appear very 70's ad not too well finished? Just for a comparison, have a look at this one: ruclips.net/video/o92oLBsfjVE/видео.html
I'm planning to fly to Europe and inspect a few with the mind to perhaps purchase and spend some time over there. .. Then ship it back to Australia.
I really liked the features, build and finish quality on the one visiting in your driveway. Great windows, liked the cartridge toilet, panoramic fold out window and the total system integration. I looked up their www and that particular Merc 4x4 is 250,000 Euros.
PS. the doggy steps were a top idea!
I look forward to watching your progress.

If your going to travel abroad then a gun safe ant the thing to have as you are going to have a nightmare in logistical issues - then the craw through space won’t help you much if it’s locked in Africa or any remote spots around the world - as they will get in. A lock is only there to keep an honest man out. The other thing is you want to have space for this or that - remember the stuff you load the heavier your vehicle becomes and when you are stuck in the middle of nowhere it is up to you to get yourself out as there is nobody out there to help at a moments notice

I know you guys want this for overland for a completely different purpose than what most of us RVers want a rig for. But FOR ME, It would drive me crazy in a short time. We travel in a 31 foot Class C with NO slide outs. Have two dogs about the size of yours and believe me the walls start getting closer and closer. Trying to get comfortable in that close of a space will sometimes make you in a very bad mood, and Jackie and I hardly even have an argument let alone get on each other's case. I know you are in love with the idea and are dreaming about the adventure, but I still would advise you to look at other options to do the same kind of thing without putting out so much money. Can these things be rented in other parts of the world just to try them out? I know I am being over fatherly, but you are young and I don't want you guys making plans based on your heart and not your brain. OK, I will stop preaching now. Sorry.

I plan on 1800ltrs fuel to give me close to 3000 kilometers range.
Simple reason: If you are pushing sand and the like, your range will be drastically reduced! Therefore, you will be forced to fill at none major outlets! Here in Australia, I can fill up at about AUD$1.40/ltr. in major cities...However, if I have to take on fuel in the outback, ... Upwards of $2.50/ltr!! Major cities are few and very far between.
The engine you are looking at is old tech, .... very thirsty and if you plan on shipping OS, you may find you won't be allowed to operate it! It will also have no resale value! There are plenty of them rusting away over here, .. you can't even give the away!
I'm going New-Tech for that very reason. I need a 2000 klm range here in Australia.
Travel light, ... the weight will kill you!

Barry Manclark so you are basically planning on a truck that needs 60l/100km?
That’s insane. Even 30 year old Russian trucks with 12l v8 gasoline engine need less than that.
For example. If you take a Steyr 12m18 which is a 30 year old military truck that needs, fully packed and tuned from 180ps to 230ps, about 25l/100km and you get a 800l tank you can travel 3200km.

Hi Sylvester, ... Mmmmm My spreadsheet error! I have 7 pages of data, and I got a cell selection wrong!
I have friends that have set up Unimog's with highway 80klms/hr about 24L/100 klm's. however, the miles and miles of sand dunes and very slow work certainly knock the figures around.
A lot of remote tracks in Australia are quite good and you can get along at quite a good pace so I would expect around 27L/100klms.
I'll make my final decision s to total fuel load closer o order date and more feedback from good folks making the sort of trips I do.
My main criteria is the ability to make it to any major City with no fuel stops required and with an adequate margin in reserve.
My initial calcs were for 1200ltr for >4000 kilometrs.
What sort of prices do you pay for new Unimog cab chassis in 4 door configuration in the US? Oz price is AUD$225K ... Yes! we do get ripped of here.
I'm also pricing an IVIECO Eurocargo ML150 and 120 cab chassis. Similar to the MAN.
If KAMAZ were available here I would also check them out. We have TATRA.
I'm leaning towards designing the camper bodywork here then having all the composite panels CNC cut in Vietnam. I built charter yachts for many years, ... similar system requirements. More homework.
Kind Regards, .... stay in touch, .... Barry M.

The interiors are very plain and practical. Color coordination isn't good. Countertops and fabrics look outdated. Wood looks cheap. Sorry. I'm sure they are solid vehicles otherwise. It seems like you are investing alot of money in something you will be spending a lot of time travelling in. I would ask for different wood, fabric and countertops. The bathroom walls are made of cheap fiberglass panels you can buy at home depot which some people may like, but they look cheap. Sorry. I'm a boat interior specialist and I see poor quality others may not notice.

agree, ... there is a lot of heavy bamboo paneling, .. cheap rubbish! Underneath is like a dogs breakfast! Very rough indeed! I think Granddad designed the interior based on his first home of the 60's.

I agree with you it looks awful. They told in thd video that this is the vehicle they take to "all the shows" - normally manufacturers take a very highly specced and highly polished vehicle to a show - if this vehicle looks half as bad in the flesh as it does in this video then I doubt they sell many vehicles at these shows!!

Ha! This rig is 'Merica XXL
Seriously, you'll find that there is a 1:1 trade-off between size and access. You want nothing larger than a four door Jeep during the day to go where the interesting places are and pull over where ever to take a pic . . . then a hotel room at night. There is no reason to try to make an RV a Jeep or a hotel suite. Pick you mission then stick with it.
These crazy expensive Global Exp rigs are laughable: they suck at both true access or comfort. It's like driving a $200K life boat around just to be able to have bragging rights at the RV park and parking lots when some dude says "wow, neat". Check your ego and get real about what really works.
I've recently driven over 4K miles in the UK in 6 weeks on holiday and can tell you that this beast would be limited to the "A" roads. I rented two different cars and a 20' Class B van based RV. The RV was the max size I would recommend in Europe. Bigger than that, you are not able to pull over or explore the single tracks or do a U turn. BTW, there is no "off road" trail riding in the UK or Europe. That's a fantasy. Go to Utah or Australia if that's your mission. But then, what da fuq you gonna see in Austrian other than dust, dirt and a couple roos?
Drive a well equipped Jeep and stay in B&B's to really see the world and meet interesting people. A four wheel drive house boat does nothing well.

not impressed with the storage outside, wiring laying around.
