  • I'm finally making a watercolor beginners video for all of my subscribers who are interested in watercolor painting, I hope it'll help you get started with this beautiful media! As you know I'm not a professional artist, painting is only a hobby of mine, so everything in this video is based on my personal opinions and experience... I just wanted to share my thoughts, espeically with those of you who want to learn how to paint watercolor by yourselves:)
    Wei
    Sorry for the typo: it should be Shmincke!!

    If I could say a million thanks in every language, I would... but a heart full of gratitude to you for sharing your journey in watercolors with all, yet your style so speaks to me personally because I see myself in your art and choice of music even on this video. I have only just miraculously found you today. Your video holds so much information as well as your visual techniques at the end. Thank you so very much. This is so helpful. I have just started painting with watercolors, although I am not new to painting. I have no formal training, just doing it all "freestyle" and "flowy." I have so much to learn about shading and value and I think ultimately it will make a big difference in my paintings. Still trying to figure it all out. For now, in the playing stage. Slowly buying some nicer paper and paints, brushes (Cotman line) to take it up a notch. I could watch you painting for hours! It's so meditative and relaxing. You are so talented. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, talent, and experience with us.

    • @WeiWatercolorist
      @WeiWatercolorist  8 лет назад +1

      +Cynthia Ava Thank you very much!! If you already have some experience with other media, I think you'll pick up watercolors very fast, the basic art principles are similar, it'll just take some time for you to get familiar with playing the game of water and pigments :p and yes, good shading and value and composition will make a huge difference to your painting. Wish you all the good luck!!!

    Beautiful! I have the same Van Gogh set and really like it. I have Schmincke ultramarine both in student and artist grade and the only difference I have noticed is how they spread on wet paper - better for the artist one. I use Lefranc and Bourgeois as well - the Louvre set was the first I ever bought. What I love about you though is you are actually using your paints to paint. I mostly collect them :( Have you ever tested Brehat watercolors? What I would like to hear more is some color theory, especially how you get your darks. When do you add red and when you ad blue to darken your greens and reds.

    • @WeiWatercolorist

      +OneTrueWord1988 P.S. I have a tip for viewers - while Wei is painting, if you want to slow it down, go into settings (the little wheel on the right of the bottom bar,) and change it to 0.5. (I usually turn the sound off also so it isn't distorted.) Maybe everyone already knows this, but in case they don't it might be helpful to someone. :)

    I love the soft touches in your painting! Very pleasing looking at all your paintings! You made it look so easy but how do you decide the values of the colours? When to add lighter & darker colours? Notice also the smooth flow of paint with your brush strokes. Will you do a simple tutorial on the most used brush strokes?

    A good Idea is to try papers in post card size which are not to expensive and you can aford to buy differant brands and make a better choice then having to spend a lot of money on a block or pad of good water color paper.

    Thank you for this wonderful informative tutorial. I wonder if I may ask that when you add detail/darker paint to your painting, do you wait for the previous layer to dry first? Thank you so much for sharing. I have certainly gained more knowledge about this medium since I have become a subscriber.

    • @WeiWatercolorist
      @WeiWatercolorist  8 лет назад +1

      +Sherron Robinson Thank you very much! Depending on the result I hope to acheive, I sometimes wait for the previous wash to dry off so I can get a clear crisp new wash, other times I simply paint on damp wash when I want a softer, less defining look.

    Hi! Thanks for your videos! It's really a big help to us beginners! Especially on your take on student or artist grade colors and the other supplies. What can you advice regarding buckling of watercolor paper? I use Canson 200 GSM for practice and it the colors pool on areas where it warps. I have cotton papers but will use it only when I am better at watercolors. 😅 Thank you!

    • @WeiWatercolorist

      The warping tends to happen more on thinner paper, you can prevent this by taping it down to a painting board

    I've gotten a really cheap palette for like 6 bucks for around 36 colors (watercolor cakes) and some colors had little chunks of different color cakes randomly inside and it was so frustrating I thought I accidentally had some color on my brush but it was embedded inside so I agree those cheap ones really aren't worth it

      Mixed media paper is usually for watercolor, gouache and acrylic, so it should be ok :)

    Hi! What kind of paper did you use for the different watercolour techniques at 12:13?

      +VPH Samson Hi! hmm..I should've probably mentioned that... I used the Canson 300gsm cold-pressed watercolor paper, I believe it's a cellulose cotton mixed paper

      +Wei Taillandier thank you! is it canson Montval or XL? I love how the watercolors flow on the paper.

      VPH Samson You're welcome:) It's Canson XL, I prefer this one than the Montval, which is actually 100% cellulose, I might do a comparison of these different papers in the future

      That's a great idea! I was actually going to suggest that since most people don't have the budget to buy different papers and test them out themselves. looking forward to your watercolor paper comparison! :)

      JendFran Thank you so much, friend! :) That music in the background, exactly when she was adding the concentrated pink/red, left me in awe. It made the moment kinda magical. ^^ Have a nice day! And Halloween!
