Monique has said several times she was fine Oprah brought her brother on the show. Oprah asked Monique first and received her permission. The problem and disrespect came when Oprah brought on Monique's MOTHER which Monique knew nothing about and didn't approve. She was absolutely against it. Just to clarify.

Rather than just going to a whole bunch of explicit details it was not her fault the first or the second time that that happened to her. She even put it in the movie that they did on her on Lifetime. Just like TLC she has been very open and transparent about both situations. If you ever decide to explore the answer for yourself it'll be a life lesson about assumptions, because finances was the LAST thing on her mind at the time. Two things can be true at the same time. Toni did sign a bad deal. And she did make naive money moves - by her own admission, including making purchases and signing receipts without paying attention to the amount of her purchases. Oprah could’ve handled her differently, but I don’t see where she was berated.

Oprah had no right berating Toni when it was because of that terrible deal. Secondly, Toni started having a lot of health issues during the time she was performing where she had to cancel a lot dates and I believe she even got sued. Oprah's very judgemental.

I worked in A mall in Baltimore( Cross Keys) when Oprah was there on WJZ. She came to shop EVERY Saturday.
And Cross Keys is expensive. I live in Baltimore.
I think was really sad about Toni Braxton situation back then is she had lupus and kept having to cancel her shows thus putting her in debt. That was very unfortunate for her.

I did not watch the “Oh” cause I thought “Oh” disparaged black women and would mix in her own life and the way she talked it was like she was saying truth about all black women. Back then, Oprah cared a lot about her White audience, so she would never try such an act with a White celebrity because it would upset the White audience. OMG I remember that interview and it was not that bad. Toni should’ve been taking notes. Oprah told her “I sign all my own checks”. She was trying to let her know that even with all Oprah has she watches her money instead of trusting others with it.
Toni had to file bankruptcy twice after this the oprah interview and still barely making it because she has to pay her husband spousal support she mentioned this in a interview. Oprah was trying to help but Toni was just embarrassed.

I am with Oprah on this one. I may part with her on the fire in Hawaii and with the Monique brother situation but not on the Toni Braxton situation. There are more entertainers than not , in history and today, that have horrible music contracts. We've seen some of our most beloved idols die penniless and destitute after living the high life when music executives did them wrong. Everyone I know deserves nice things, but folks have to spend what they can afford. Period, let's normalize not being in debt. If you have a contract that pays you pennies on the dollar, there is a lot you cannot afford. If someone worked at a sandwich shop making $7.50 an hour, we would reprimand them for buying $500 flatware, if a singer is making $7.50 an hour singing songs, she should get the same reprimand. After Toni took offense she went on to file bankruptcy again 10+ years after the Oprah interview. The lesson? Owe no man anything but love.

I have no issue about what Oprah said. Toni was over spending without knowing her finacial status. She should have waiting until a couple of albums in to start shopping. Every artist is dealt a "bad deal" You shouldnt start shopping until you finances are stabilized. Experience is the best teacher.
Two truths can exist; while Oprah could’ve handled that with more grace/care, the truth is between signing ✍🏾 the deal and extravagant spending 🍽️, Ms. Braxton had financial issues; call a thing and thing. Expecting another person not to do their job is odd.
Equally, it may be reasonable to assume that poor financial handling runs in their family as Tamar has had financial issues as well post her marriage to Vince.
It would seem Trina is the only family member that’s wise with investing and allowing her name and brand to build wealth and businesses as oppose to living on the celebrity of it all. Fame don’t pay no bills( ask the royals).

Attorney here ( I absolutely love listening to you Laila). However, I have to disagree with your opinion. Oprah is disciplined & has wisdom regarding her finances. Although she is conservative with her spending at times, it is wise not to overspend regardless of your status and wealth. I disagree with the way the record company treated Toni. Toni like any artist should have their contract read and interpreted by an entertainment attorney. Moreover, Toni was spending too much money. She has filed for bankruptcy twice. Anyone who gets to a place of bankruptcy has spent more money than they earned and therefore cannot pay all of their bills. It is always best to live beneath your means rather than over your means regardless of who you are.

Toni filed for bankruptcy only 2 times. First in 98' due to the bad record contract and financial mismanagement by both her and her management team.
Second bankruptcy I'm 2010 was due to her Lupus flare up diagnosis which forced her to cancel the whole Vagas show contract she had just renewed before getting I'll. So all the venues came down on her for not being able to pay the off.
People need to be in the situation to really know what caused the matter.
Toni is a very smart woman that can always make money from her God given talents.
She seems to be doing much better financially from after the second and LAST bankruptcy, back 14 yrs ago!!!

This is the insult that just keeps on giving. There have been 25 years worth of opportunities to reflect on how she made Toni feel in that moment and to apologize to her. That could only happen if Oprah was able to look at Tony and see a human being versus a prop to ridicule and project her own insecurities on. Oprah has been very vocal about how she was abused as a child so you'd think that she'd recognize abusive behavior, but instead she's turned into the abuser. At least in that particular situation.
