Megalopolis - I was expecting a new version of the Fritz Lang, which is absolutely is, and absolutely is not. I didn't know if I liked it, it chopped here, went to there, and then, towards the end I understood how much I loved this film. It paints perfectly the tyranny of the past versus the aspirations for the future. It is not entertainment, it is an inspiration and a thought provoking message
I agree it makes a few useful thoughts. But! What's thought provoking about the death of Aubrey? That felt like such a shortcut, even though many other parts competed for being most off.

As a fan of movies; It’s a masterpiece in the technical sense of directing, acting, set designs costumes and music and overall production; a lot of effort and attention to details and in achieving the proper balance in conveying mood and emotions with visuals/dialog/audio and intellectual interpretations…it should be a benchmark/standard for students reference in pursuing the movie industry from directing to acting to design and music to use in “how to” and “why”…from the very first scenes, the impression of quality and dramatic effect are conveyed…HOWEVER, it will unlikely appeal to the regular movie going audience seeking thrills and mainstream entertainment.
"HOWEVER, it will unlikely appeal to the regular movie going audience " It's one of Coppola's bucketlist projects, audiences don't even have to watch it or like it, this exists for him only.
Its narrative flow feels surprisingly similar to flicks such as that under the Marvel brand, I mean the overall tempo of the movies people pay money for in the last 10-15 years. I used the name Marvel only to highlight how it overtook the money pie completely. I personally don't find its storytelling good, First Avenger being the best
The film is insane and that's not a bad thing. I explained it to my wife if I could go back in time to Andy Worhol's wearhouse parties, this film would be playing on a loop in one of the rooms. It didn't make wide success because it's art. Is it a perfect film... Noooo. But visually it is absolutely amazing and is a creative work refreshing to see an accomplished director not sit on his laurels but try something ambitious
For future films, change styles/manners within the piece. I'd change them every 47/19 minutes. If people have it in one take, at least try to make them feel like their inner pomodoro timers actually send them to jog or something.
That doesn't excuse making terrible films. Coasting on the success of your youth doesn't mean your dotage is criticism-free. Vision decades ago - decades - doesn't excuse *terrible* work later.
i was pondering that chip science the same day. knowing that the same company who owns cigarette brands also owns chip brands means they are likely mimicking the addictive qualities from the former for the latter. they don't care about nutrition or health, just creating that perfect mouth feel and taste for the brief second the food hits the tongue. past that point, you're just chasing the high of the crunch and burst of flavor while reducing the volume into a nutritionally deprived mush to be excreted without providing anything for the body to use.
The only reason we have the likes of Godfather, Apocalypse Now, and so many other great 70s films was the freedom directors had earned for themselves during that decade. When the art drove the product, not the cash. I think it says a lot about Coppola that while Colbert met with Spielberg and Nolan in private, comfortable locales, that the much older and decorated Coppola walking out there uncomfortably as if to prove a point. Cinema was founded as art, not a public orgasm. Great American artist here

Nice interview, and a film I need to do homework for before I see it again (a lot of ancient political writings were used). Native American Iroquois/Haudenosaunee philosophy talks about the 7th generation...having an awareness of how the actions of today will effect the 7th generation of people. Unfortunately, the majority of business models are only concerned with making the quickest buck, and the next generation be damned. And we as citizens of planet Earth aren't doing a whole lot on our home fronts to help the planet and our 7th generation family members survive...energy conservation, water conservation, eating with an eye on health and the environment, etc.. No matter what Elon Musk has planned on Mars, there IS no Planet B. However, I remain hopeful (and clearly Mr. Coppola does too). ❤☮🌎
I just got finished watching Megalopolis and the best way I would describe it is that it is a Noble film. Once I understood its core messages I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Sadly -2015 -That's about the last year I had access to any vino let alone , a bottle such as that . 🍷🍷 Cheers to the parallels of then and now . As once one of those child "geniuses " I would like to have my future now .
This man forced a child actor to rerecord all of the dialogue for a movie directed by that child's sexual abuser, and then told the kid he would never work again. This happened after the director was arrested, and he continued working with him for years after he was released from prison. He's also quoted in print saying that the child(who was 7 at the time the molestation began, and 12 when the director videotaped the abuse) was close in age to the adult abuser. The director, Victor Salva, is 16 years his senior. He only did 15 months in prison for molesting a child for years, and possessing and making child pornography. This is the only thing I can think about when I hear Coppola's name.
"Megalopolis" was a mixed bag for me. It didn't make a lot of sense, and there were some moments here and there that could have been better developed. Still, I appreciate Francis Ford Coppola's courage of his artistic convictions.
This movie was genuinely an amazing cinematic experience, ive never been so gobsmacked and confused. I laughed my ass off uncontrollably at times throughout. Extremely entertaining would highly recommend it
Saw Megalopolis a few weeks ago. I legit feel that there's a four hour cut somewhere that would be among the best movies made in the last 25 years. But the movie I saw in theaters felt incomplete somehow.
He made a film for serious people who have respect for cinema and the boundaries men and women like himself continue to push. Sadly we live in a world where this genius has to go broke to make a film while people Ryan Murphy are handed oceans of cash to make shit tv like American Horror Story. I mean was Sarah Paulson being serious when she said Kim Kardashian should be taken seriously as an actress? What happened to standards. Thoughtful criticism is a good thing, but now if you give an honest assessment of anything you’re labeled a hater. Our standards are so low we elected a convicted felon POTUS.
Adam Driver has been pushed into something which is not his territory. His strength is sensitive portrayal of a character type through his subtle body gestures. This is more in the league of Galdiator. He is a Gladiator but not this type. The content itself doesn't live up to the likes of The Great Dictator or Selma for Adam to give a speech which matches a Charles Chaplin or David Oyelowo speech. Coppola hit the highest mark with The Conversation. Celebrate that if you want to. Clearly he is here to sell his wine. He doesn't give two hoots about the film which he knows is dead due to so many wrong choices one of which Colbert rightly questioned.
So then is it greed that is holding us back as people? For example, if we weren't all poor then they wouldn't be rich? Why would people purposefully try to sandbag society? Why would people not work up to their full potential? Yes, in a sense an effective worker is just working themselves out of a job, but think of how much people could accomplish if we helped to praise one another and build each other up instead of trying to break everybody down. Is it an inherent human trait or a learned behavior?
Flying cars would be a huge risk. A lot of people can barely drive properly on the ground, let alone in the air. They were always just a fantasy, maybe even one that was designed solely to sell more cars. Like, stick with us and our vision, great things are coming. If everyone had a flying car, they’d essentially also need a pilots license to operate it. And where could you actually fly it, what would the regulations be? I can see there maybe being some kind of specific airway and maybe a highly automated system of hover or flying transportation vehicles, operating like a cable car or train line to a set destination. Likely piloted by trained personnel or an advanced computer system. But I highly doubt it’ll be a personal vehicle that everyone has in their garage, capable of manual control and able to zip all over the place. That would be chaos. But I also love the look of those 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s visions of the flying cars of the future. I just doubt that they are practical. They’re simply wonderful dreams.
@@AVPerth I would love it I am a long time pilot and plane owner. Also with all the drones around and gps there could be wonderful streets in the skies just like IFR flying with planes. So even today It could be done.
I love SC. Been watching him with great pleasure for years. But he sure includes a lot of booze in his shows. As an alcoholic I admire his self control and discipline.

Cheers to freedom 😁🎉❤
I just got finished watching Megalopolis and the best way I would describe it is that it is a Noble film. Once I understood its core messages I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Sadly -2015 -That's about the last year I had access to any vino let alone , a bottle such as that . 🍷🍷 Cheers to the parallels of then and now . As once one of those child "geniuses " I would like to have my future now .
Мамочки 🤯🤯🤯😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
He is right
Art will always be free. It's our choice to make whatever we want.
Bram Stokers Dracula is one of the Greatest Films EVER made!!!
As good as the movie is, the book is even better.
Ruined by Keanu's wooden acting and terrible attempt at an English accent. Try The Godfather or Apocalypse Now instead!!

I got bad news for you about Wagner, Hitchcock and Picasso.

Extremely entertaining would highly recommend it
“To the future” is my toast now.
And OMG YES!! I have always said that Colbert’s miming is seriously fantastic! Coppola ands I are in the same page 😉
Twixt was the bomb, yo...
Saw Megalopolis a few weeks ago. I legit feel that there's a four hour cut somewhere that would be among the best movies made in the last 25 years. But the movie I saw in theaters felt incomplete somehow.
Good for you!
Spot on
Well said
Adam Driver has been pushed into something which is not his territory.
👏👏👏
I think you meant a future that is worthy of them Francis.
I remember in the 50s I read and saw pictures of flying cars and wonderful things that would be here by the 2000s. Only we are holding us back.
I guess the latest Wolverine movie was the potato chips flavor this year.
He is a creative genius!
Most films these days are pure uncreative garbage!

I love SC. Been watching him with great pleasure for years. But he sure includes a lot of booze in his shows. As an alcoholic I admire his self control and discipline.
