      Agree completely. How are you going to shut out your bro, colleague whatever from your wedding. Not wanting to explain Indian weddings is weak. Its one text or email done. That’s what I did when I got married. Or you can tell your friends to hit google. Schulz brought you to the party son. I’m pretty sure I probably wouldn’t have heard of you otherwise and I’m Indian but until this pod I hadn’t heard of you. Sorry. Friendships and slights like this will hurt and sometimes after something like this they don’t last. I hope that’s not the case. Even if it was on zoom you should have properly invited him and the team and leave it to them to show up or not. Otherwise it’s crazy awkward like coming on the pod saying yo I got married. These guys are supposed to be your friends. Just an opinion from a casual observer. Congrats on the wedding!

      Eg 1900's Britain an old guy arranged marries a 14 year old
      1920's Their kids marry by choice
      1950's Their kids have familes out of wedlock or even don't marry
      1980's Their kids create single parent households

      Ditto. This was good and enlightening. Makes me wanna do more research

    • @AM-tu1rc
      @AM-tu1rc 3 года назад +73

      One thing that separates Andrew Schulz from a lot of non-Indian comics who make jokes about Indian culture is that he actually does research and respects the culture. Growing up and even to this day whenever you see some Black or White comic make a joke about Indians, it's some dumb outdated shit like "Doot doot hello thank you come again please let me give you a ride in my taxi" type BS, but since Andrew does so much research and actually has conversations with his friend Akaash, he's actually able to make really insightful jokes like how Indians treat their daughters, the different religions in India, colorism, etc. etc. and it makes him so much funnier.
      That being said, whenever you have something like "Indian Culture", there's not really any good way to represent it. When you look at shows like "Indian Matchmaking" or "Never Have I Ever" (Mindy Kaling's show), there's always going to be Indians saying stuff like "Oh this is offensive, this isn't reality, etc." but the thing is Indian culture is not a monolith. What Akaash is saying here about woke brown people complaining is that yes there's always going to be negative parts of culture here and there but that doesn't always have to define it as a whole.
      I'll say this as an Indian American person (like the people in the show). The whole "matchmaking" process is not normal in Indian American communities. Most Indian Americans date and find partners just like any other American, but in maybe like 20% of the cases when they are in their 30s or can't find someone on their own, they do end up resorting to matchmakers. The thing this show does well is really define "Arranged Marriage" as just matchmaking, almost like blind dates. The Indian process of "arranged marriage" isn't about forcing people to get married, it's about suggesting potential partners. And the best part about it is that since they've already been screened by the parents, the couple will ideally have zero family problems.
      Again, this is my own experience. If you or anyone else has questions about Indian American culture, I would love to answer them and educate others, but obviously keep in mind that I am speaking from my own experiences and don't mean to represent 100% of all Indians.

      @Harry Garrett lol just do a simple youtube search for an Indian wedding. Try to understand the difference in the concept of the wedding in west v/s the rest. For you, marriage is keeping a minimum of people. For us, Pakistanis, Iranians, and few other middle eastern countries it's the exact opposite the more attendees better it is . The success of the marriage is calculated in the number of wedding attendees here lol you hear/see a wedding going on walk-in no one bats an eye. Come visit once experience it for yourself

Often times groups won't like the stereotypes, so they get upset that "they" are being "represented" that way, but it'd be naive to think that stereotypes don't have _some_ truth in them for how _some_ people are. It's just weird to assume someone is trying to find validation in a race of people rather than it just being who they are, regardless of who they're around.

My Indian friends all married Indians because for them it was just like stepping into something familiar and they understood how family and culture worked. None of the marriages were forced, but it was based on family, compatibility, financial, and physical features. All the Italians and Greeks where I lived rarely married outside their cultures. I dated an Anglo/Indian for two years, but we realized that it wouldn't work, family for him was all consuming and important, and I was not raised that way. I knew he loved me but the whole cultural thing was too overwhelming. I took away from that relationship, great Indian recipes which I cook for my family today. This is why George Lopez, he writes his stand-up for Latinos and I love it. I find that a lot of people that don't like him don't understand the culture.

    I loved this episode. I liked the analogies of brown/gay/black people for white people.
    The colorism issue and the religious aspects are very accurate in every culture. Yall went deep on this one.

      Lol you do know that wife's family usually(What I know of in North India) pays for the wedding. Weddings usually cost (a decent one) from 20-50 lakhs INR that's like 25,000$ -50,000$. Like a lot of Punjabi wedding spend like 5000$ on alcohol in the wedding alone. Personally I despise indian weddings too expensive and waste of time my marriage will be a simple one both sides just sign contracts and done we're married. But I can understand why you think of it to be beautiful. But better have a thiccc wallet if you want get one.
