Also gotta love that we thought the prison break was unnecessary because they were pardoned anyway but it turned out those guys learning from Edgin's escape prevented Forge to escape the same way later.
Holga did say she took the "walking stick" from a wizard's lair years ago. But only Simon with his arcane knowledge could identify it. Yeah, it's basically a Portal Gun from _Portal._ But the spell Dimension Door exists in D&D, it works slightly different (it doesnt need surfaces and the exit can be somewhere out of line of sight, but has a maximum range), but the Hither-Thither staff is much more useful esp when it's not restricted in charges per day.
Took my brother to see this in theaters, I had a good time and thought the story was solid. My favorite parts were the graveyard interrogations and the underground treasure hunt
The Hither Thither staff is definitely an example of what happens when the DM didn't design any alternate route across the puzzle bridge and has to invenst a new magic item on the spot to prevent the sesion from being ruined.
The funniest part of the intellect devourers ignoring them is kind of a meta joke. In the game, Intelligence is a dump stat for every one of their character classes (barbarian, bard, sorcerer, druid, paladin).
26:13, "pudgy"'s name is Themberchaud, and the reason hes so fat is becpuse he REALLY doesnt do much but eat. The Dwarven city they mentioned before is famous for the weapons and armor they make, and to insure they have a CONSTANT supply of SUPER hot fire for thier forges, they employ a CERTAIN Red Dragon. So, all he does all day and night is sit around being waited on hand and talon, huffing and puffing and feasting like Henry the 8th!
This feels like a real game. Like the hither-thither staff just showing up after the sorcerer ruined the bridge trap. You could almost hear the DM swearing under his breath. Or the super powerful paladin conveniently showing up to help them get the artifact, then going away. Michelle Rodriguez is playing a barbarian. They wear less armor but have a lot of strength. Chris Pine is playing a bard. They have minor spellcasting abilities, but mostly they use music to buff the party. Wizards memorize spells. They have to declare which spells at the beginning of the day and can only cast those spells that day. Sorcerers use magic in a less formal, more intuitive way. They have far fewer spells, but the spells are more flexible and there are no casting limits. Druids cast nature-related spells and can turn into animals.
The Speak With Dead spell also was really well depicted, the party ALWAYS messes it up, if they had included the Long Distance Communication spell, I think they would need to do it like, 20 times because they keep exceding the limit of how many words can be said
The best part about the hither-thither staff? I can see the DM going “this can’t possibly be misused.” Then the party uses it to cheese both the heist and the final encounter.
This comment might get buried but my dad died in February and you guys having a laugh and vibing has really helped me move through the grief. Thanks guys ❤️
It's a metaphor for a paladin's oath. Even when the way is rough, and it would easier to deviate from the path, stay the course and don't stray. Zenk just takes his oath a bit more literally than might be wise.
This was done so well. I loved the use of practical effects on the Tabaxi (cat folk), the Aarakocra (Jarnathon), fish, and dragonborn (the other guy on the jury). I had so much fun watching this because I play alot of dungeons and dragons and kept whispering the spells to my husband in the theater (annoying for sure but I couldn't help it). I'm kinda sad because I guessed the end due to 1. the necklace of invisibility 2. they hung a *little* too long on that shot of the anti magic bracelets when they were getting their stuff back after the gelatinous cube. But overall super fun and the audience was packed on opening weekend and loved it. I don't know how it didn't make more money because, with audiences, it's pretty well regarded. It's probably the protest due to the Wizards of the Coast debacle that happened right before this movie came out. They kind of shot themselves in the foot.
The low take is likely because shortly before the film was released WotC had a plan to modify the OGL and a lot of D&D players were incensed by this and decided to boycott the movie
I lost my shit when I saw jarnathan for the first time. I was expecting CGI I was not expecting a dude in a bird suit. It was much better than CG if only because it was funny.
This wasn't a box office flop, despite what you heard. Sure it didn't make loads, but it made the number one spot, broke even and more - and more importantly for the makers, it raised the profile of the brand, which was the actual purpose. So another movie is expected.
This movie made me wish I could pay table top D&D with some guys. And all the characters had so much bad luck, it made me wonder if they all rolled a 1 for their luck stats. 😂😂😂
No plan in dnd ever works out how you want it to. Only once in a blue moon do you see a plan that actually works on the first iteration. Ive been playing for 7 years and ive only seen ONE plan ever work they way they wanted it too.
One thing I noticed on a second watch was before Johnathan shows up, for the hearing at the beginning, they used green wax as they approved their pardon, but for forge’s they used red wax as they did not approve his pardon.
A little fun fact i found while watching this movie is, the faint scream at 23:26 is the same scream used in elden ring, specifically the demi-human mobs. I think it's a stock sound and i laugh my ass off when i noticed it lol.
I was on vacation in Florida with my fam. I heard good things and took the four of us. It was an absolute blast, but it’s honestly even better on rewatch so don’t feel badly.
Simon had to overcome his own self doubt and grow confidence in himself in order to attune, because in D&D Sorcerers use Charisma as the stat that makes them a better Spellcaster. A fantastic way to lead to a Sorcerer's arc of improvement, they literally just need to believe in themselves enough to cast better magic. (Wizards use Intelligence, so they study and understand magic like math or computer programming. Sorcerers are kinda a cheat as they are born with a connection to magic and can just make it happen by willing it.)
He’s also probably a Wild Magic Sorcerer, a Subclass of Sorcerer prone to losing control of their magic, which is why he’s always messing up his spells
Owlbears are one of the iconic D&D monsters. You can adopt an owlbear cub in the video game Baldur's Gate 3, too. Same with Displayer Beasts (the panther with the tentacles that can project illusions and teleport), Beholders, Mimics (the living treasure chest).
26:30- there's actually a sad story to the dragon. Hatched from a egg in a near dwarfish city, he was raised to use his fire to light the forges. However- they planned to kill him once he got too big. Only by escaping did he live. And even then, the dwarfs must have fire for the forges...
A point about the brain eaters. The party is a bard, a barbarian, a sorcerer, a druid, and a paladin... all of them would likely have intelligence as a dump stat so it's pretty accurate game mechanic-wise.
I went to see this movie with a buddy of mine on a whim and had an absolute blast with it. I know very little about D&D outside a few video games/shows, but the story and world's logic and magic system were pretty easy to understand. Also, I'm a sucker for a good portal weapon.
So the black cats in the maze are called Displacer Beasts. And yes, they cast illusions of themselves. And yes, they're unfair lol. They can literally solo pack hunt. And still hunt in packs
I think what gets me is Holga is just dumbfounded they used it on her. She gave her life not only without considering she'd be brought back, but actively glad her 'Bug' would meet her mum. But little did she know, Holga may not have been her mum, bit she was her mother.
I was kinda expecting Holga would be the one being revived since the apology scene when the Bard says he wasn’t trying to revive his daughter’s mother, but his wife, it was ultimately for himself even though he pretended it was for his family, so when he revived Holga, he brought “Kira’s mother” back to life, it was a true sacrifice for his daughter
42:45 Only noticed this because of a tiktok, but this fight sequence actually mimics the tabletop version of combat. It's so quick its hard to track, but they attack in order twice through, Bard, Barb, Sorc, Druid, Boss. Mechanically in DnD, each "round" is calculated as 6 seconds, and that sequence is 12 seconds of runtime.
Watched this movie with my dnd party and it was amazing. This movie feels like you are watching an actual campaign, while i was watching i could imagine players fucking it up and make new plans on the spot because they got a bad roll. Its sad that this film didnt get the attention it deserved, even if you arent a dnd fan, you can still enjoy it
6:49 The thing is, Forge did keep his word here. He took the tablet, and he kept Kira safe. Maybe not quite in the way that Edgin intended, but it meant he could get both back later.
Well it was released at the same time as the John wick movie and the Mario movie also there was kind of a boycott because of what wizards of the coast did.
It kinda makes sense why Edgin and Holga didn't wait for the pardon. They had Jornathan right in from of them. If they waited for Jornathan to sit, it'll be way harder to wait for another opportunity.
This Movie was all one big Dungeons and Dragons game...lol. Then of course, you have Thumberchaud the chonky boi. I love Thumberchaud!! Great reaction ya'll!!
So yeah, in universe, this wizard who clearly never matured mentally thought combining things was cool and made some owlbears. Turns out they could reproduce! A few hundred years later and owlbears are a PROBLEM. Think the angriest bear you’ve ever seen and it thinks humans smell delicious to begin with. You see an actual one out in the wild, you run like hell.
33:01 It's called not rolling high enough in dnd. Whenever someone trips, falls, takes too long to do something, hits something, it's all the characters trying to do an action like 'get my foot out of this hole' and then not rolling high enough with the die.
As someone who’s been playing D&D and other similar games for years, this movie really captures the essence of what playing D&D is really like. It’s got comedy and drama with sometimes conflicting tones but great timing.
Especially prison break. Players made plan for a half of session, and they gonna follow it, no matter what happened, even if it makes everything even more bad for them
I just finished watched D&D and it was a fun movie to watch. Love the casts members, the storyline, the action, the adventure, the comedy and the music choice.
It does suck that this movie didn’t do great in the box office, but I like to imagine that, even if they don’t green light a sequel, the main cast would get together and record a campaign as their movie characters for RUclips.
As a long time DnD fan I went into this with low expectations since the old DnD movie was terrible. Though this one was a lot of fun and depicted a lot of the game very accurately
I cannot easily think of a reaction I have enjoyed more. The conversation about VHS at the end was so funny to me because I went to college mid-late 90s and the way to see subbed anime shows, and subbed HK films was that you had to visit a Chinatown in a larger city and hit up these small "import-export" stores and then you'd find them on pirated VHS or VCD. Me and a friend took a trip to HK in summer 98 and saw Rurouni Kenshin English Dub on TV there randomly, then the next summer we went to Chinatown in Canada on a trip and rented the whole show on VHS, in a literal cardboard box full of tapes, so we could see the Sub. fun times.

That ice JJ fish jump scare had me in tears 😭💀this movie is definitely slept on but it’s pretty good
26:13, "pudgy"'s name is Themberchaud, and the reason hes so fat is becpuse he REALLY doesnt do much but eat.
"Damn bros actually caked up"
"...Sire!?"
lmfao
I can see the DM going “this can’t possibly be misused.”
Then the party uses it to cheese both the heist and the final encounter.
This comment might get buried but my dad died in February and you guys having a laugh and vibing has really helped me move through the grief. Thanks guys ❤️
condolences...my dad had a health scare in January...we been trying to live these days to the fullest....prayers to you.
@@goat1408 we're only here for a short while, so make the most of it 🙃
@@MenstalHelp most definitely...
My condolences on your loss. 😢
It's a metaphor for a paladin's oath. Even when the way is rough, and it would easier to deviate from the path, stay the course and don't stray.
Zenk just takes his oath a bit more literally than might be wise.
You can tell this movie was made with so much passion & love for Dnd & film
I'm so used to call the cat people Khajiit, I forgot they're called Tabaxi in D&D.
Its JarnathAn
Mario came out same weekend. Between the boycott and Nintendo, D&D got iced.
This wasn't a box office flop, despite what you heard. Sure it didn't make loads, but it made the number one spot, broke even and more - and more importantly for the makers, it raised the profile of the brand, which was the actual purpose. So another movie is expected.
The paladin is so old because that little bit of magic that affected him from the undead spell gave him long life but didn't fully corrupt him.
He got the Blade treatment of only being partially turned.
No plan survives the enemy.
@@kiedragerl8119
Or the party themselves. Or random civies. Or animals. Or... Anything really.
@@kiedragerl8119 "Everybody has a plan till they get punched in the mouth." Mike Tyson
I think we would all love to see them do a D&D stream
Love how this film got the campaign vibe/ \experience down perfectly.
31:08. I heard Diesel is a pretty big fan of RPGS. Fast and the Furious is pretty much a DnD campaign with increasingly crazy story arcs
Vin did a one-shot DnD game with some Critical Role players a couple years ago based on a fantasy movie he had coming out at the time.
RANDOM
@@Lupasan IKR
How the heck did I not notice this the first time through, I've played through Elden Ring like 8 times lmao
@@goose1415 it's soooo funny when you realize it 😂
I really hope they do a sequel
I really wish I saw this in theaters too.
it was way better than I expected!
I'm not sure if I just had a great audience or because nerds came out in force but it was great in a packed theater. It was a riot.
It's still in theaters.
I was on vacation in Florida with my fam. I heard good things and took the four of us. It was an absolute blast, but it’s honestly even better on rewatch so don’t feel badly.
That bit with xenk walking over the rock was entirely improvised, the actor didn't hear the director say cut so he kept going 😂
Not all sorceries are born with magic, sometimes some weird event can infuse them with it or some super powerful being and give them magic.
Sofina reveals her tattoos
Everyone: “Its the avatar, GET ‘EM!”
@8:38 fun fact, horses are actually around 15 horsepower, because steam engine inventor wanted to puff up the apparent specs
Fun fact, one of the groups during the Games were dressed as characters from the original D&D animated series
point of order, the Blur spell is actually quite potent and has the ability to give any attack aimed at the blurred person have a 50% failure chance.
So the black cats in the maze are called Displacer Beasts. And yes, they cast illusions of themselves. And yes, they're unfair lol. They can literally solo pack hunt. And still hunt in packs
YESSS ROSHIE BLESSING US WITH ANOTHER BANGER REACTION ❤❤❤❤❤
42:45
Only noticed this because of a tiktok, but this fight sequence actually mimics the tabletop version of combat.
It's so quick its hard to track, but they attack in order twice through, Bard, Barb, Sorc, Druid, Boss.
Mechanically in DnD, each "round" is calculated as 6 seconds, and that sequence is 12 seconds of runtime.
I love how many practical effects they used in this movie.
Watching these reactions is LITERALLY the closest thing i have to watching movies with friends (even though thats pretty sad 😂)Thank yall for that
Watched this movie with my dnd party and it was amazing.
Literally the way this movie actually used everyones skills and abilities in a way that I woulda thought of x 100 is why it was such a good watch
This movie really was fun, had a good time and wouldn't mind a sequel at all. Shame it didn't make more in the box office.
If ya'll ever do a d&d campaign it would be the funniest thing on the planet 😂😂😂
This movie deserves much more love than it has been given.
33:29 SIRE! Lol
This was such a great and fun movie. It's a shame it didn't do well at the box office.
Well it was released at the same time as the John wick movie and the Mario movie also there was kind of a boycott because of what wizards of the coast did.
I'VE WATCHED THIS MOVIE THREE TIMES AND IT KEEPS GETTING BETTER AND BETTER
This was my 4th time and it gets funnier every time. My favorite part is the female judge yelling "Oh Jarnathon!" It gets me every damn time.
Nobody would be happier if Fast movies were actually set in the DnD Universe than Vin Diesel.
the potato was the equivalent of that one player going "I do this dumb shit" and rolling a nat 20
Seriously, always getting a nat 20 for something ridiculous but the moment we have any actual combat… low rolls all the way.
Between this, Vox Machina and the ever growing popularity of Critical Role and Dimension 20, it's a good time to be a D&D fan
Bruh, the Ice JJ Fish references had me rolling.
This movie really captures the actual atmosphere of a D&D game. It’s heavy in places, but it’s also a game, and games are meant to be fun.
It kinda makes sense why Edgin and Holga didn't wait for the pardon. They had Jornathan right in from of them. If they waited for Jornathan to sit, it'll be way harder to wait for another opportunity.
Loved the reaction. I was so hyped for this movie and i am glad it delivered!
Thanks for reacting and keep it going
This Movie was all one big Dungeons and Dragons game...lol. Then of course, you have Thumberchaud the chonky boi. I love Thumberchaud!! Great reaction ya'll!!
The hither tither Staff is THE DM emergency Item, after the Group f'd up the puzzle he worked so hard on 😂
Glad you liked it! The more people see it, the better the chance for a potential sequel.
The tablet of reawakening is a high rarity magic item so it takes like, years of concentrated work to make one.
Players made plan for a half of session, and they gonna follow it, no matter what happened, even if it makes everything even more bad for them
Liked for JJ FISH reference, OMG
I just finished watched D&D and it was a fun movie to watch. Love the casts members, the storyline, the action, the adventure, the comedy and the music choice.
36:57, Mimic.
Name says it all, and they are FAR AND ABOVE, more awesome then you would expect.
It does suck that this movie didn’t do great in the box office, but I like to imagine that, even if they don’t green light a sequel, the main cast would get together and record a campaign as their movie characters for RUclips.
Finally Roshi dropped the Reaction in this Masterpiece
Shout outs to Sheera the plot understander bringing these Peasants to understand the main point of the let the mom go metaphor.
Justice for my homies Bird boi and Skeleton boi 😂😂
As a long time DnD fan I went into this with low expectations since the old DnD movie was terrible. Though this one was a lot of fun and depicted a lot of the game very accurately
I cannot easily think of a reaction I have enjoyed more.
I have already seen the movie - I did that whole suspension of disbelief thing, and didn't really note All of the things you did...
...the way you were pointing out some of the echoes from other films. Copying - no repeating pivotal moments, in other stories We've LOVED for years, and some of us for decades.
My character is andruid, and I was momentarily being a "rules lawyer" about the nuumber of times the druid got to change shape, but really the was just jealous envy.
Thank you for pointing all of the things I hadn't paid enough attention to see. You all are wonderful, and I need to rewatch this movie.
And broodily making a "house note exception" for a game I'm not running yet.
Thank you all for the laughter
Unexpected Ice JJ Fish cameo
They really took it to heart that players tend to do erratic wtf things.
I still have a vcr plugged into an old crt, I have a lot of 8 hour vhs tapes of recordings of simpsons and futurama episodes, including the premier episode of futurama. It’s fun to go back and watch those old 80’s commercials. There’s an ad for a barbecue sauce that keeps coming up and it’s just a grown man in a kiddie pool screaming and covered in sauce it’s good stuff
I was holding my breath in vigorous anticipation for yall to watch this. When I got the notif I was ecstatic! LOVE absolutely LOVED this film, and yall are the best reactors out there. Made my evening
This movie was so fun. Glad they did the D&D universe justice.
One of the teams in the maze is the group of kids from the Dungeons and Dragons cartoon from the 80's.
This movie is what i always wished a D&D movie would be. Fun and a good time at the movies.
Me and a friend took a trip to HK in summer 98 and saw Rurouni Kenshin English Dub on TV there randomly, then the next summer we went to Chinatown in Canada on a trip and rented the whole show on VHS, in a literal cardboard box full of tapes, so we could see the Sub. fun times.
