My mother and her family, who is from Georgia, Alabama Florida area, cooked stewed, chicken and rice all the time. It’s such a comfort food. I just usually use chicken wings which is what my mom always did! We have to remember chicken wings were cheap, cheap back in the 50s and 60s! Lol.

Can you use chicken thighs with the skin still attached? I have a regular pack of bone-in chicken thighs, and wanted to know if it will give the same results with the searing.🤔

    • @ThatGirlCanCook_

Absolutely, but make sure to get a great sear so the skin is not gummy! You can also opt to remove the skin later in the cooking process if you choose not to eat it.

Thank you.💛 UPDATE: I had to write to you again because your recipe is the first hot meal I've had in many weeks. I am coping with many illnesses and not always able to cook, so often just have toast & cheese for dinner. This took a couple of hours to stew, since I wanted the chicken very soft. But I had to interrupt dinner to write because it is so warm and delicious I had to thank you again, this will be a treasured recipe, for me and my daughters. G-d Bless.

Solid recipe, going to make this tomorrow...BUT...FYI folks, avoid Complete Seasoning...it's mostly MSG and other additives that you should avoid, that goes for most of Badia products (personally, I avoid that brand in general)...if you want to imitate "complete" seasoning you can use garlic, onion, cumin, salt, pepper, oregano, smoke pap, and parsley, just to name a few...there's really no set way to make your own, it depends on the flavor you want to achieve but I highly encourage you to do so

Msg is just a flavor enhancer. The idea that msg is bad for you has largely been debunked. It actually contains 1/3 the amount of sodium so it's a great options for people that have problems with their sodium intake.....

I was born and raised in Florida, and my grandmother, mother, great aunts, and aunts all called it stewed chicken. Smothered chicken is definitely different. Smothered chicken was fried chicken smothered (covered and simmered) in brown made from scratch gravy! Oh wee...

This recipe is AMAZING!!!!! Have made it twice so far (minus the celery but everything else like the video) and my family of 6 all love it so much. Everyone always wants seconds. First time I used corn starch and heavy cream, second time rice flour instead of cornstarch (2tbsp) and no heavy cream. You really need to cook it down, I cooked it covered for 20 and uncovered for 30 and it was perfect. When I cook it uncovered during the second half I turn the heat up a little so that it can reduce faster. It will thicken a bit more as it cools. I used Cajun seasoning like she said instead of seasoning salt because I didn’t have any. This will be in our rotation from now on. Thank you!

In the 50s in VERY rural Tenn. I lived I was from the city. My step-dad from there. I was 13 all was very strange. One entertainment for a Sat nite was. A CHICKEN STEW" that's wat it was called. Several neighbors gathered. Women put the pot on. Then adults played cards. The kids played. Wen food was ready everyone ate. Then women cleaned up dishes. All went home. I believe this event had been going on for. Centuries.

Looks fantastic! Long ago, my Pastor’s mother told me the way to save your dish from having that burnt taste is to rub a bar of soap on the bottom of the pot before you stir it. I didn’t actually think it would work, but it really does!!! I’ve been using this method for 30 years!!!
