Another FANASTIC video. You do an outstanding job of explaining the camera being reviewed. I can't wait for the next review and especially a possible manual for the FZ1000.
Hi Graham. Just to say that I followed all your Videos on the FZ200, and found them very very helpful. I upgraded to an FZ1000 yesterday. Thank you so much for all your hints and helpful descriptions for settings and general usage.
Graham, thank you for this great review and introduction. You have answered all of my questions. Most importantly, I wanted to know more about the 'manual zoom' ring -- I was expecting a real manual operation. I had loved my now-lost FZ-200 especially after your tutorials, and was looking for a replacement. I may end up getting another FZ-200. Cheers!
a wonderful video Graham ,Great how you go through the points so clearly step by step.I think it will be a while before I could manage such though .Lovely images and I do think you hit nail on the head as to why people have been hyper critical in reviews ..... nice presentation...
Mr. Houghton I always very impressed with you photography equipment knowledge wow, thank you for uploading such an incredible video and thank you for not playing loud annoying music. be safe here on 2020
Hi Graham. Thanks for all your brilliant videos which I have found really helpful. I have bought a Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ1000EB and have already taken lots of brilliant photos and videos with it, but so far all mostly in Intelligent Auto mode. What would be great would be to have a video blog with your recommendations on how to start exploiting some of the wealth of features that a relative novice like me is a bit overwhelmed by. So how best to take the use of the camera forward. I'm sure this must be a common desire from owners wanting to step up from point and shoot mode. My main interest is pictures of my 2 year old grand daughter growing up. Some of my best photos so far have been using the zoom from not too far away so she does not react to the camera. Also I am a badminton enthusiast and I want to take action pics and videos of my England team mates in action (indoors but in bright arenas). 4K seems a bit restrictive as I may want to video a 3 set match lasting 40 minutes. Also I use it as an archery coach to review shot technique by my trainees. Loving the camera. Just want to understand what features to learn how to use as a priority.
Great video Graham.....I have been looking into purchasing one of these FZ1000 cameras .....your informative video has made me buy a mint second hand one ....looking forward to using it ....thanks .
Thank you so much for this wonderfully informative video Graham... I am not ready to upgrade yet, and I hope by the time I am that Panasonic will have decided to add a thread to the front of this camera.. I like to use Polorising filters sometimes, and have been experimenting with an ND Filter... I do think though that the weight and size may put quite a few people off... Thank you again for all your help...
Thanks for doing this review. Very helpful. I hope someone shoots some footage with dialog using this camera so we can see what happens to sync as you convert from 30fps to 24fps.
Graham, love your reviews.I am disappointed with the economy mode,I use a wireless remote release for bird photography and cannot find a setting for longer than 10 mins. Any idea's? Bob.
Forst of all ...your explanations are great, thks I own a Fz1000 and its a great thing, the only function I am not able to use is the camera high speed mode (slow motion) in the menu of the camera it stays always grey...Cannot change at all...any idea? Dank je wel
I recommended my brother in law buy a Panasonic DMC-FZ200 because of the f2.8 capability through its entire zoom range. We have both been favorably impressed with its capabilities even though he has very limited knowledge of photography and no desire to learn more about it. I’m like the one eyed leading the blind and bought a DMC-FZ1000 after watching all your videos about it. I have yet to produce one shot with restricted depth of field. I’ve never heard of using a “defocus” to produce that effect and have had no luck learning how to do that. Wish I’d never heard of the FZ1000 and bought the FZ200.
Hello. I'm thinking of buying the lumix fz1000 now that they drop the price down. I have a few questions. Do you think that the lens aperture 2.8-4 it can be a problem or is ok for having a bigger sensor? Is it worthwhile buying it today, or better waiting for the next update? I already have a Canon SX50, so I'm looking for something a bit different.... Thank you
very nice review - thanks. on the focus - If subject has not edges like a while wall etc then I have hard time focusing with contrast and phase detection - but it rarely happens
Hi Graham- This is what I was waiting for a well informed video about this camera. I was surprise by the weight of this camera for its size very light when first picked up. one thing I would like to know, can you assign the record button to another.
Graham, I have been a fan of yours since I bought a FZ200 6 years ago. I am going to buy an FZ1000 mk2 and want top know if you will be upgrading your recently developed FZ1000 manual? You have truly been a champion for anyone using Lumix cameras.
i read that wide angle for video changes depending on whether the ois is on or off and on some other factors too. please confirm that in your next video
Nice overview, especially the size comparison which is quite useful as my local shop doesn't stock it currently so I've not got to see one in person yet. By the way, if you're left-handed, you'd still hold your left hand under the lens. As much fun as it would be, you can't exactly move the hand grip and controls over to the left, can you?
I want to buy a Panasonic bridge camera and I want to make a choice between the FZ300 or the FZ1000 or the FZ1000 mark2. I mainly want to use it for macro and sometimes for landscape and birds. Is there a big difference in photo quality in normal light? What does the crop factor of 2.7 mean for the Fz1000 mark2? Which one can give you a nice blurry background in macro?
In macro the challenge is normally to get enough depth of field at these higher magnifications. By default the smaller sensors have more depth of field at the same aperture and focal length equivalent. Larger sensor = lower noise in most lower light levels. Fz10002 is a great all round camera
+Graham Houghton ...The Aperture starts to decrease so fast, I just consider it an F4.0 Lens. I have a Nikon lens that does that too, but there's nothing wrong with F4.0, it still comes in handy. Panasonic is getting a 4 year run out of this Bridge Camera, and I think that's quite commendable. With Sony, you practically need a subscription to keep up to date. Great Videos Graham!!!
Hi Graham, I have a question regarding the fz1000 as compared to the Sony a6000. I have some old Canon lenses and thought that the Sony would be a better option, but the lenses I have are nothing special. I know that the Sony has a larger sensor and I can use an adapter to use my old lenses and gradually get into a new system. But, the notion of not changing lenses is appealing also, not having to worry about dirt on the sensor is also something to consider. I think that you have both mirrowless and fixed lens cameras. What's your advice? Which do you use more and why? BTW, I mostly use my camera FZ200 for travel, hiking, and scenery. Thanks
Thanks once again Graham, for making us aware of the cons of the FZ1000, which is on its way to me right now. I look forward to viewing other videos as well, many times no doubt :) Are you thinking of an ebook too?
Hello Graham, how does the Panasonic FZ1000 video performance compare to mirrorless camera such as the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GH5 or GH5S, particularly in low light.
Graham mate, i am looking at making a few short films whilst Tramping ( Backpacking here in NZ ) and tossing up between the the fz300 & fz1000, i am after a 4k uhd which can allso shoot decent images, which one would you recommend, weight is not really an issue if the other has better quality or images or video rates, cheers, Ras
Graham, thanks for your excellent reviews on this and other cameras. Due in part to your review, I've sold my Canon 60D and am ready to order one of these. Will you answer one question for me? Is it possible to adjust the shutter speed while in the 4K video mode? There will be times when I'll use the 4K video mode, not for the video but to catch stills which would be otherwise difficult. I might want to speed up the shutter for a sharper image.
Graham, I am really interested in upgrading from my FZ150. I am disappointed that the FZ1000 is such a big camera, but I really like all the extra features it has. It seems if it were closer to the FZ200 size, it would be nearly perfect. I am guessing with all the adjustments and processing the FZ1000 has, it must need a lot of room for computer horsepower? I like the idea of the focus/zoom ring which should allow you to get exactly the setting you want. Also the idea of extracting 8MP pictures from 4K video sounds like a great feature if the quality is there. Anyway, I admire your work, expertise and dedication. Always interesting and extremely informative.
The size is due to the sensor size needing that big a lens to get that focal range. The body is sized to balance well with the lens and give good ergonomics. It's all a compromise, but it's a nice intersection of size, focal range, and image quality. Processing horsepower doesn't take up any space at all relative to those other things, and you could easily fit the processor of this camera into something small like a Sony RX100.
Thanks for the video Graham. As an FZ200 owner giving serious thought to the FZ1000 this is very helpful info :) Have you tried the free Panasonic iPhone app that allows for wifi control of the camera? I tried this with a friend and it worked out to around 30m between iPhone and camera.
Hello dear Graham! Thanks for every video that you release. Very informative and its easy to understand. My question is... I purchased an FZ300 (mostly after seeing your informative FZ200 videos). What do you have to say about the FZ300? Are you getting one? Thanks in advance sir.
Hi Graham, I have mentioned your videos in my review on Amazon.uk. However could you clarify the sensor size. My research resulted in a size of 13.3mm by 8.8mm thus 116 sqmm (rather than 15.86mm by 13.39mm) Thank you so much for your informative reviews!!
Hi ! Is it possible for you to show me how to adjust my Panasonic FZ-1000 for shooting silky waterfalls and river water ? It's difficult to me because i have bought this camera a few weeks ago.. What basicly i need to know is : do i need to set a time lapse if i've set a 4sec. shutter speed allready for waterfall shooting and how to do this? Thanks in advance!
Hi Graham, I gust got my FZ1000 and it is a great camera but I have interesting issue with Silkypix. As all FZ users know the free version that comes with the camera can process files only from the camera it came with. I still have my old FZ100 and I'm not sure if I install the new version of Silkypix it will allow me to keep the old one. Have you tried to instal 2 instances of Silkypix on one PC?
Hey Graham great video on this camera I do have a question I have the Sony dsc h300 a very good camera but has 2 down sides 1 being my no extra mic port's and in video mode it's not stable in dark lighting. Would you recommend this FZ1000 or FZ200 it's mainly for videos like buses trains & cars & showcasing small model's any advice would be great thanks
Cradle the lens in your right hand if your left handed 8mins 10 in?!!! how would you hold the camera to shoot?...i have just tried this with my own camera (i,m right handed) and i now have a sprained left wrist trying to contort myself into a position that i could take the pic :((..i could only achieve this by holding the camera upside down whilst looking in a mirror and balancing on one leg and then it was hit and miss if i would get that much sort after shot that everyone hopes to get,but with my trusty FZ1000 AND your wonderful videos i hope to capture that "shot of a lifetime"!....Keep the vids coming Graham and thanks for taking the time to help us all out, :)
Hello, Graham! Always I watch your reviews - they are very interesting and useful. The DMC-GH4 with PZ-lenses (14-42PZ and 45-175PZ) can cope a remote device like Libec ZC-3DV Zoom Control: the zoom and start feet is regulated. As appears from FZ1000 has the same stuffing and perhaps Libec ZC-3DV Zoom Control too can PERHAPS cope. It would be interesting to learn it. If you have such opportunity.
I believe the libec uses the LANC protocol to control DV cameras. This camera does not support any LANC at all the zoom is only available via the lens ring or the zoom lever unless there is something I am not aware of.
Graham Houghton Yes, libec uses the LANC protocol, and protocol P for management of the Panasonic chambers (Panasonic uses not LANC, but the protocol "P"). It is the protocol PRECISELY WORKS with GH4. Therefore if opportunity to check with FZ1000 is presented it would be healthy. If there is no opportunity, and is fine! Yours faithfully.
Graham, Thanks for your wonderful review of the FZ1000. I am leaning on Getting the FZ1000 as a replacement for my FZ200... For my preadolescent ADHD soccer and golf iBooks author interaction books, My set up has been my GH3, a rented GH3 and my fz200. I use the FZ200 as my walk round photo/video camera for production. Sometimes I will put the FZ 200 close to the ground via a gorilla pod for video shots. Other times I will put the FZ200on my glide gear handheld steadicam. The big issue is that it is noticeable to me when the video cuts to the FZ200 footage. I had been toying with getting the GH4 but if the FZ1000's 4k video down sampled to 1080p is unnoticeably close to the the quality of the GH3 at 72mbps then I will get the FZ1000 and wait for another year to get the GH4. Recording to the SDXC card both the GH4 and the FZ1000 record 4k at 100mbps. Can you do a comparison of the GH3 video at 72mbps and the FZ1000 4k down sampled to 1080 under normal outdoor daylight? Thanks, Jose
Hi Graham, thanks for the great reviews on this camera! Could you please tell me, can you adjust exposure compensation while in fully auto mode on this camera or only when using PSAM modes, and can you use the dial on the rop right on the back of this camera to do that? I was looking at the Sony RX10, and it has a dedicated dial for exposure compensation on the top.
Joseph Peel Hi Graham, I have another quick question for you if you don't mind please. When recording video, do you have to set the focus switch on the back of the camera to AFC? I watched an online review of this camera, and in the menu you can apprarently set AFC that way... Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
Hi Graham. I purchased the DMC-FZ1000 after seeing your review. I love the camera and shoot at 1080p 24fps. However I have a project coming up where I need 1080p 30fps but that is disabled and I can't figure out how to enable it, can you help me with this?
Hi Graham. I've been following your videos for several years. I actually bought a fz200 based on your recommendation years ago when it first came out! I also bought a fz1000 last year and have been fairly pleased with the purchase. I recently purchased a fz2500 (fz2000) which in my opinion is a superior upgrade from the fz1000. I was wondering if you have checked out the fz2000 and what your opinion is of this new model. Do you plan on doing a review of this camera? I really like this camera so far! I especially like the touch screen, expanded zoom, built in ND filters, headphone jack, separate barrel rings for zoom and focus and expanded 4k photo mode.
William King Hi William! Is it true that the external mic of fz1000 doesnt work in 4k mode? Which one do you suggest me: fz1000, fz25000 or lumix g7? Thanks
Hi, Graham. Good info! I just upgraded from my fz200 to the fz1000 yesterday. I know there's a great improvement in video and auto-focus capabilities, but I have a question. I like to shoot wildlife now and then and the fz200 had a constant 2.8 aperture. The fz1000 has 2.8-4.0. Would the larger sensor as well as the lens compensate for this and result in crisper images? And in low light at about 800 ISO would the fz1000 at 4.0 be better than the fz200 considering the sensor size?
Without a doubt, you can use the FZ1000 with iso 2400 and the i.zoom at full stretch and get better images than the FZ200 at iso 400. At iso 400, which would be the limit for the FZ200 the FZ1000 is excellent in both stills and video.
Hi Graham, I have run into an interesting "glitch" in my Lumix 1000. I have had this camera for several years and love it. However, recently, and for no reason I know of, the RGBY histograms are attached to every photo that I take. When I use the playback function, the photo is tiny to accommodate the space for the 4 histograms. I cannot find any reason this happened, and I find no setting to remove it. I have reset everything to factory settings but the 4 histograms are still attached to every hoeo and show up on playback. Help! :) Thanks.
Thanks for this very informative video and covering some very important points! It looks like a lovely camera and I love the picture quality but I will probably skip this camera because of the weight and bulk factors (specially as I'm very petite) and because I tend to work mainly on auto setting so all those bells and whistles are probably wasted on me. I'm starting to look around for my next camera having got the Canon SX30 superzoom bridge camera a couple of years ago. I love it although on rare occasions now the zoom doesn't retract on first go.. so checking out potential upgrades. I'd love a small, lightweight superzoom with extremely powerful zoom options and excellent picture quality.. I'm not into changing lenses because I camp a lot in very dusty desert environments and it could be a quick goodbye to a lens system camera. I'm now however craving the best picture quality as I'm going semi pro.. so feel a bit stuck between a rock and a hard place! Any ideas? I think perhaps I'm asking the impossible and maybe in a few years time what I want will be on the market.. a compact dslr superzoom..!?
I still have DMC-FZ30, which is still wonderful, and made in Japan and all. As I recently got D-Lux, I interested in upping my FZ30 in the the V-Lux, as I like the fit and finish of Leica branded Panasonic cameras. And I think they are still made in Japan, the ones with Leica logo.
Hi Graham, I am thinking of buying the fz1000 but I hear that there is no image stabilization when using 4k video, is this correct? and is it a problem when filming in 4K.
8:05"you are going to cradle the lens with your left hand, right hand if you are left handed"Hahaha! How would you suggest we do that graham?Love your reviews!
AT 26:25 you mention there are no threads for extension lens. This is incorrect. There are 62mm threads. I use a 62mm to 55mm step down ring to attach my Olympus B300 1.7x and it works great. Image quality with 4k video even with digital and iZoom are great (i.e. 3808mm). kgravett.smugmug.com/Other/FZ1000-and-TCON-17/i-wNVGtPT/A
The thing I dislike most is the OIS in 4k video mode. Why? Because it disables itself if it "thinks" you are using a tripod or monopod due to low shake. I wish I could force it to stay on all the time. And yes, yours does it too, it's not just mine. Maybe a later firmware will change this if Panasonic receives enough complaints.
as ever great detail.... just a little slip " left and right handed people will hold the camera in the same way...unless Panny have made a left handed version I've missed.. ;-)
• 4K, who cares? not for now and worse if is not working properly • Marketing use big numbers to fool customers • The manual ring focus is useless and lack a lot if you do a slow focus • Cannot change shutter speed in 4K mode • Blurry & shaky viewfinder when focusing • Once in a tripod, you got to disassemble everything to replace the battery or the memory • No touch screen, this would have been better for manual-touche screen focus • No MOV video mode, still the useless AVCHD mode that goes darker than MP4 • Memory still placed on the battery compartment, this is still BS • No option to turn on the camera in Play mode only • AF still has some problem, hunting and locking • Can’t shoot tethered to a Laptop • Its not that sharp at 400mm • A Cheap-ass plastic body • Has no PC Sync or 3.5mm Sync Socket • No Extended ISO option in 4K mode • The 240fps/720p options is not available (was presented at the conference) • Viewfinder slows down in low light • Not sealed body • No constant aperture- f2.8 (Give me 200mm max but f/2.8 constant) • Minimum aperture only F8 • IS doesn't work in full zoom in 4K, this is BS • Internal noise on the lens while zooming and recording • As usual, a 29:59 limited recording • Poor battery life • No headphone jack • And more cons...

The camera has a thread for filters, just not the same sort of base of lens thread as the FZ200 for extension barrels for extra zoom range :)

Graham,
Thanks for your wonderful review of the FZ1000.
Thanks,
Jose
Grest video. I have the fz200 and love the camera. I was looking for a second mega zoom with a 50 to 60 zoom. Any recommendation?
Thanks
Hi Graham, thanks for the great reviews on this camera! Could you please tell me, can you adjust exposure compensation while in fully auto mode on this camera or only when using PSAM modes, and can you use the dial on the rop right on the back of this camera to do that? I was looking at the Sony RX10, and it has a dedicated dial for exposure compensation on the top.
Yes you can adjust EV if you select the iA+ mode and it is adjustable via the back control wheel if you do so.
Graham Houghton Thanks!
Thanks!
What is your opinion Graham, worth buying the FZ1000 or better a DSLR ?. It seems very high price and see that it has some drawbacks.
Thanks
very interesting comments, congratulations
great information, specially on details.
Please, can you AE-LOCK in 4K Video mode? Thank you.
Hi, Graham.
Okay, thanks, Graham!
THANKS FOR THE GREAT REVIEW !!!
Can this camera crop in with digital zoom for video like it can for photos?
Hi Graham, I have run into an interesting "glitch" in my Lumix 1000. I have had this camera for several years and love it. However, recently, and for no reason I know of, the RGBY histograms are attached to every photo that I take. When I use the playback function, the photo is tiny to accommodate the space for the 4 histograms.
I cannot find any reason this happened, and I find no setting to remove it. I have reset everything to factory settings but the 4 histograms are still attached to every hoeo and show up on playback.
Help! :) Thanks.
Use the DISP button to cycle through the options whilst the image is in the playback mode. You will be able to get back to a single display option.
@@GrahamHoughton12 Thank you very much for the quick response.
I'm curious as to how long how far along the zoom range does the fz1000 can stay at 2.8 aperture.
I like macro and wildlife photography by the way if that helps!
+Andrew Piatek Both the V-Lux and the Lumix FZ1000 is made in Japan. Some older Leica branded Lumix cameras were made in Germany.
Is this camera better than the Sony A7?
Does this have a micro usb slot
How To Make Good Working With Liliput 4K Field Monitor In Panasonic Lumix DMC, FZ 1000 How To Tell Sir Please
Great work, thanks!
Is the Panasonic GH4 the best investment for video right now in a camera?
I would say so :)
Hi Graham, I am thinking of buying the fz1000 but I hear that there is no image stabilization when using 4k video, is this correct? and is it a problem when filming in 4K.
rivi268 No there is! Works fine on my FZ1000!

8:05"you are going to cradle the lens with your left hand, right hand if you are left handed"Hahaha! How would you suggest we do that graham?Love your reviews!
Wow. What a great price of kit. I still fancy a gh4. :-)
Thankyou! Sad I could only give a single like.
The fact that it is virtually impossible to use telephoto lens doesn't justify an upgrade for me. I use my telephoto too much. Great video as usual.
For me, the first few minutes of this fine revue was all that was needed...the beast is too heavy!
as ever great detail....
just a little slip " left and right handed people will hold the camera in the same way...unless Panny have made a left handed version I've missed.. ;-)
Hi Graham, the motor noise from this camera is unacceptable and will ruin most videos shot indoors.
better sound and some tech.details =OK
Why do all the reviewers of this camera seem to be British or Australian? I need someone with a slow southern accent.😊
• 4K, who cares? not for now and worse if is not working properly
• Marketing use big numbers to fool customers
• The manual ring focus is useless and lack a lot if you do a slow focus
• Cannot change shutter speed in 4K mode
• Blurry & shaky viewfinder when focusing
• Once in a tripod, you got to disassemble everything to replace the battery or the memory
• No touch screen, this would have been better for manual-touche screen focus
• No MOV video mode, still the useless AVCHD mode that goes darker than MP4
• Memory still placed on the battery compartment, this is still BS
• No option to turn on the camera in Play mode only
• AF still has some problem, hunting and locking
• Can’t shoot tethered to a Laptop
• Its not that sharp at 400mm
• A Cheap-ass plastic body
• Has no PC Sync or 3.5mm Sync Socket
• No Extended ISO option in 4K mode
• The 240fps/720p options is not available (was presented at the conference)
• Viewfinder slows down in low light
• Not sealed body
• No constant aperture- f2.8 (Give me 200mm max but f/2.8 constant)
• Minimum aperture only F8
• IS doesn't work in full zoom in 4K, this is BS
• Internal noise on the lens while zooming and recording
• As usual, a 29:59 limited recording
• Poor battery life
• No headphone jack
• And more cons...
